4:171 O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. It does not say in the Qur'an Jesus is the Word OF God but, rather, a Word FROM God! This is a big difference! When Harun ar-Rashid was Khalifah (ruler of the Muslims - 786 to 809 CE), he had a scholar by the name of Ali ibn al-Hussain al-Waqidi, as one of his chief advisors. A Christian physician, who THOUGHT he was a scholar, debated al-Waqidi. He said he had read the Qur’an and found a word that says Jesus, peace be upon him, is a part of ALLAH. The word he pointed to was ‘Ruhuminhu” in Qur’an 4:171:
“O People of the Book! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of ALLAH anything but the Truth. The Messiah ‘‘‘Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary) was (no more than) a Messenger of ALLAH and His Word [KALIMATU] (‘Be’ and he was), which He bestowed on Mary and a spirit from Him (Ruhuminhu.” Al-Waqidi pointed him to the following two verses:
“And they ask you concerning the Ruh (Spirit); Say: “ar Ruhiquli ar Ruhumin amri
Rabi” (The Spirit is one of the things, the knowledge of with is only with my
Lord). And, of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little.” - 17:85.
Further, he pointed out as ALLAH (The One and Only Unseen God) says in 45:13:
“And (He) has subjected to you, from Him, all that is in the Heavens and all that is
in the Earth; it is all as a favor and kindness from Him. Verily, in it are Signs for those
who reflect (think deeply).” Here ALLAH uses the same word but makes it clear that
all that is in the Heavens and on Earth is from Him and that has been subjected to
man. If you do not believe all that is in the Heavens and on Earth is part of ALLAH,
how can you say that Jesus, peace be upon him, is a part of GOD? No, the reality is he is
the possessor of a Spirit FROM HIM. Everything we have is from ALLAH as a favor
and kindness from Him. If ALLAH created everything and everything is under
ALLAH’s domain, how could anything be a partner with Him?
In addition, the rest of the verse (4:171), goes as follows: “So believe in ALLAH and
His Messengers. Say not TRINITY: Cease! (it is) better for you . For ALLAH is (the
only) ONE GOD, glory is to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him
belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the Earth. And ALLAH is Al-
WAKILAN (the Sole Caretaker of everyone’s affairs).” He not only tells us not to
believe in the Trinity but that He doesn’t need anyone and that He doesn’t have a
partner, son or associate. Needless to say, after Al-Waqidi pointed out his proof,
the Christian shut up and left.
