1965 thru 1972 was the most creative period for industrial design, art and music in recent history. It was like a muse inspired everyone and everything then abruptly disappeared.
Let me tell you, it was a lot more fun than buying a generic car today. I ordered a new 1978 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham. That was getting close to the end of being able to create a car exactly the way you wanted it. I ordered so many options that it came from the factory with two window stickers. I worked in the used car business and knowing what the options were on a vehicle made it interesting each time our buyer came back to the lot with a car.
I'll never forget the day Dad brought home a Tahoe Turquoise '67 Toronado Deluxe. The family was stunned. I remember my mom harassing my Dad for a year to drive it all of the time. She liked it better than the '66 Turquoise Pontiac Tempest he had bought her a year earlier. A year later, he finally relented, and found her a clean, pre-owned '66 Toronado in Tropic Turquoise. I grew up surrounded by Turquoise Toronados growing up! What a life, huh?
I think the first generation Aurora owed styling cues to this first generation Toronado, including the paint color. Pretty sure a similar paint color was used on the car featured on the front cover of the Aurora brochure. My ‘99 had that color, as well.
I was 9 yrs old when these came out and my friends and I thought it looked like the car of the future at the time. I also had a neighbor down the street that bought a new '67 Dodge Charger in a cream yellow color with black interior - we had never seen a car with "bucket seats in the back" before and thought that was cool as hell.
Same here..both Toronado and yellow Charger in my neighborhood growing up...thought same as you did about the buckets in the back seat of the charger in the Toronado being way space-age!
Beutiful car. I remember the first time i saw one was in 1966 when I was about 7 years old. We were driving down the freeway in my Dads 1966 Galaxy 500 passed one and my younger brother an I both did a double take and turned around and looked ( remember, this was 1966. Seatbelts were not always used) and and stared at the car. The kind gentleman driving the car saw our wide open mouths and showed us how the hidden headlights worked and waved. IIRC it was even the same color. Awesome car! Thanks!
They should have continued the steering wheel; it makes the driver's position in the car. The center spokes are so evocative of the classic airplane yoke. Just a stunning car. Really like the gold color.
I remember seeing several of these on back rows in used car lots in the 70s they were very low priced because most people didn't want to work on them because of the front wheel drive
Older mechanics of the time warned used car customers about how complicated they were but they weren’t problematic and served as the drivetrain for GMC based recreational vehicles for years without problems either.
I saw one of these in the late 1970’s as an 9 year old and knew this car was beautiful, what’s more remarkable is that it was in New Zealand in the South Island . Never seen another in the flesh. It will always be stylish and beautifully proportioned
I’m a genuine GM guy but you have to admit that 1968-1970 Dodge Charger was automotive art. There simply wasn’t a better example of the “coke bottle” shape, that no matter the maker, and was an essential design directive of so many vehicles from about 1965 onward even through the 1970s…
My sister and I along with another kid used to carpool to a tv show we were on every saturday in an identical Toro. What a car silent body with just enough engine roar when you got on it. You can't appreciate how large the front seat are is untill you sit in it. Just wonderful. 1966 was such a great year for GM. Coke bottles rule!
I had the pleasure of riding to Acapulco from Mexico City and back in one of these; the car was a decade old at the time. The owner really enjoyed it flat cornering on that winding road. Truly impressive automobiles.
When I was a kid, a family in our neighborhood bought a new black '66 Toronado with white interior. This car was a real spaceship back then and I really didn't associate it with other Oldsmobiles nor with any other GM products, for that matter. Even the turn signals made a sci-fi sound, I remember.

This guy is encyclopedic in his vintage American car knowledge, and yet, he does not come off as "the smartest guy in the room" or arrogant. Really a treat to see and listen to his content.
My father had one when I was 16. It was a beast. The most interesting thing was the cruise control. You could set the cruise control while stopped and then push GO. It was then wide open until it reached the set speed. This was clearly before lawyers were involved in design. My father had two others as the years passed, but as is typical, they were more luxurious and less exciting. He then moved to BMWs.
I had 2 Toronados in my life time, I owned a jet black 1966 and a blue 1977 model. I bought that 1966 for $600. at an Oldsmobile dealership back in 1982. I moved overseas so I had to sell it, I do miss my 1966 more than my 1977 model. I purchased my 1977 model in 1980 for $3600. The 1977 model was one beautiful land yacht with all the "bells and whistles", I sold that one before I moved overseas as well. I Love the American cars of that era.

100% agree. If you look at the design proposal, the "flame red car" of David North, the designers managed to scale that up to the E-body platform masterfully. You *still* see cars with those wheelwells! This was such a perfect choice for the antagonist in Stephen King's "The Dark Half"... a black 66 Toronado.
Absolutely love these, ever since one rolled into High School automotive shop, circa 1979. Still one of my top dream cars to own. Wished I’d grabbed one years ago, instead of going the Starfire path.
I missed my opportunity to buy one of these in 1987, it came into the dealership just after I bought my 71 Monte Carlo. Couldn't afford it also 😢. Thanks for another great video.
Always thought it was interesting that the power lock option was so far behind windows and seat in uptake, despite being cheaper than either. Particularly on the E body cars - since they were high dollar. Possibly (buyer's) thought being - 'who needs this, only two doors' - and I can reach over.... Then you get into the 70s where it's not so uncommon to see (especially) a B body with power locks and crank windows. Who knows, fear of crime rising (?) Nice showcase of this model. For once I'm not hung up on the front overhang. Years after introduction and as a yongster first spotting cars, GM did fool me - I could not have told you this shared so much with the Riviera.
One of my favorite cars of all time. They were very good in the snow back then. Very few cars were good in Michigan winters like this and the Corvair. My Father had a Corvair. He was recently divorced from my Mother and he needed a Less Expensive Car to get around in. The Corvair was an ALL Terrain Vehicle for those days. lol

I had a blue 67 that was my daily driver for quite awhile when my sons were little, sadly I had to sell it about 11 years ago, but we had plenty of good memories with that car and someday I will own another. I met Adam briefly at the eyes on design last weekend and asked about some AMC content while forgetting the episodes he has already done, sorry, he seemed like a nice guy.
The wheels are the optional chromed version RPO N98 with the trim ring P06 as standard on the Deluxe model. No paint required That combo of colours are a home run. Amazing ride.
If I recall, the cornering lights came on the Deluxe model. I was only twelve years old at the time but I was really into cars. ( and the mid-60s were fabulous! There was total excitement with all the new car introductions each year. My buddies and I would walk down to the car dealers and peek into their backlots every September to get a sneak peek at the new models as they were driven off the factory truck)

Imo this was the Toronado's best looking color. Just stunning. But my eyes were still distracted by the lovely 72 Mark IV in the background to the left. Hopefully that one will be covered soon as well
The Toronado and the Riviera seems to be GM's first shot in the war against vent windows, followed by the '68 Corvette, Camaro, Firebird and the '69 full size lineup. It was sad seeing those ventplanes go, but on these coups, their absence certainly contributes to their strikingly clean lines.
I'm pretty sure that the longer front end was not dictated by style, but rather by the entire drive train having to be in front of the firewall. I saw a photo of a first-gen Riviera used as a test mule for the UPP. The giveaway was a much longer front overhang. Also, another clean example of why Detroit shouldn't have gone crazy with the vinyl tops on every car down to the Nova and Pinto...
There were NO full sized front-drive cars available in the US when we got the double whammy of the Toronado and Eldorado. Think about that. And the Toro and Eldo were decidedly NOT the same car, or even the same kind of car. And the Toro still looks modern.
Those Tornado's look futuristic even by today's standards, so people back in the 60's must've thought that they were looking at a spaceship or something when they first came out. Beautiful colour on that one too..
Hey Adam, great video! Love these cars. I have a 66 finished in Doubonet which is a deep purple. Also, at 5:26, that light is actually for the “Flarestat” switch which was the 4-way hazard flashers. This was an option on cars prior to ‘67. The parking brake light is actually right above the “Oil Pressure” light. Speaking of that, I always found it weird that the car comes equipped with gauges (amps, temp) but not oil pressure. Anyone know why that gauge wasn’t even an option?
I'm not sure if the red light switch to the lower left of the steering wheel was not for the hazard lights. My parents had a 66 Buick that had a switch like that which may not have been originally designed into the dash.
My dream garage would most certainly be stocked with one of these beauties, alongside its brethren models from the other GM divisions, including juxtaposed alongside a 26’ GMC Palm Beach Motorhome… another fav of mine tho, that i’d love to have, would have to be a ‘68 Merc Cougar w/concealed headlights! If I can ever acquire one of those, I’d have to also obtain a replacement of my previously owned ‘71 Torino Ranchero GT w/351 Cleveland, MT w/Hurst Floor shifter &, 9” final drive. Regret selling that car years ago. A ‘70 MACH 1 w/351 C would also be nice to have. Mopar-wise, a Cuda would be sweet to have. AMC-wise, an AMX. Pontiac-wise, a GTO Judge.
Love your video. My folks bought a brand new 66, but it was in the more muted champagne mist color. One little mistake in your video. You call that light under the dash the parking brake warning light but actually it was an optional four-way hazard flasher. The cars already had a standard parking brake warning light, located in the upper dashboard area next to one of the turn signal indicators.
I probably told you before my great Aunt bought a 66 blue with white interior. The sales man didn’t want to sell it to her originally because she was in her late 70’s. She traded her 98 in for it.
It's a shame GM doesn't build cars that look like the ones they made in the sixties and early seventies. GM made some of the world's best-looking cars in that period. I remember when I saw my first 1966 Tornado in Turquoise. I thought it was the most beautiful car I ever seen. I was amazed that they could build a car so good looking. I figured that had to be the pinnacle of design. How could they design anything better looking than that.
Awesome car and color. There’s another older guy that takes his around the local shows of the northern suburbs in metro Detroit. Same color as that one but not as nice. He’s got a story board and some info on it. Those were just cool cars way ahead of their time. 😎
It is a great car. One question, the interior door handles. I've always felt that these are nice other than the high mounded handles of today. Was it a safety consideration to move away from that door release handle? Also, really like the rear panel.
This, the 66 Riv and then the Eldorado that came later were peak design for not just GM, but for the American automobile. In my opinion, of course. There were some good efforts after this but nothing that caresses the eyes like this does.
3:48 That front overhang might have been unnecessary, but there were more advantages and fewer disadvantages to it on the Toronado, with the drive wheels on right underneath, than on the Riviera.
Absolutely beautiful. There's a low mileage '68 near me in fantastic condition (and looks to be the same color albeit with vinyl roof) that I've got my eye, and despite the upgraded power (385hp 455!) it doesn't quite fit the bill of the '66 or '67. We'll see!
I have had numerous Chevrolets, Buicks, Oldsmobiles and I must think of the loss of Oldsmobile with lament almost every day because I pass by every other type of remaining GM dealer brand yet almost all of the GMs that I had that were favorites of mine were Oldsmobiles.
I believe the front bench was called the Stratobench , I believe this could be a W 32 , as this had the correct double scallops on the rear twin tail pipes balance
I just watched an early Mannix episode with a convertible Toronado in it. Don't know if it was a '66 but it's definitely a one-off. I think it's a George Harris creation. I'm a fan of these cars.

I've always liked the '66-'67 Fastback Charger more than the next gen.
Being born in 1955, I was blessed to grow up with these beautiful cars. A neighbor had the maroon '66 color used in ads and brochures.
My eyes kept drifting toward that beautiful Mustang 2+2 in the background!

The Tornado was possibly the most beautiful car of the '60's. The Riviera was right behind it.

Those huge round wheel arches and flares which are flattened at the outer rim remind me of my 02 Mustang.

If I can ever acquire one of those, I’d have to also obtain a replacement of my previously owned ‘71 Torino Ranchero GT w/351 Cleveland, MT w/Hurst Floor shifter &, 9” final drive. Regret selling that car years ago. A ‘70 MACH 1 w/351 C would also be nice to have. Mopar-wise, a Cuda would be sweet to have. AMC-wise, an AMX. Pontiac-wise, a GTO Judge.

Love your video. My folks bought a brand new 66, but it was in the more muted champagne mist color. One little mistake in your video. You call that light under the dash the parking brake warning light but actually it was an optional four-way hazard flasher. The cars already had a standard parking brake warning light, located in the upper dashboard area next to one of the turn signal indicators.
When I was in Japan I saw a 1/32 scale 66 Toronado for sale in a model shop, great condition. Wish I bought it but that chance is gone now
I probably told you before my great Aunt bought a 66 blue with white interior. The sales man didn’t want to sell it to her originally because she was in her late 70’s. She traded her 98 in for it.
It's a shame GM doesn't build cars that look like the ones they made in the sixties and early seventies. GM made
some of the world's best-looking cars in that period. I remember when I saw my first 1966 Tornado in Turquoise. I thought it was the most beautiful car I ever seen. I was amazed that they could build a car so good looking. I figured that had to be the pinnacle of design. How could they design anything better looking than that.

If I only had extra cash in 1984, I would have bought more of these cars, bought my 1969 Chevelle Malibu in December of 1983. Still own it.
Rolling drum speedos were used in the Citroen CX too.
Awesome car and color. There’s another older guy that takes his around the local shows of the northern suburbs in metro Detroit. Same color as that one but not as nice. He’s got a story board and some info on it. Those were just cool cars way ahead of their time. 😎

It is a great car. One question, the interior door handles. I've always felt that these are nice other than the high mounded handles of today. Was it a safety consideration to move away from that door release handle? Also, really like the rear panel.
This design is a no f*#ks given to aesthetic limitations. Grotesque in its excess and beautiful at the same time.
I think that the red light under the dash is the four-way flasher not the parking brake light(it pulled out to activate )
Saw these when they were new from the factory. Looked odd to us then. But its a nice design now.
This, the 66 Riv and then the Eldorado that came later were peak design for not just GM, but for the American automobile. In my opinion, of course. There were some good efforts after this but nothing that caresses the eyes like this does.
Peak GM design for sure. 66-67 perhaps the best for them overall
3:48 That front overhang might have been unnecessary, but there were more advantages and fewer disadvantages to it on the Toronado, with the drive wheels on right underneath, than on the Riviera.
Hey Adam. On Hemmings there's a '69 Imperial coupe in BLACK with 14,000 mi.! Much better shape than my '71 black coupe.

Absolutely beautiful. There's a low mileage '68 near me in fantastic condition (and looks to be the same color albeit with vinyl roof) that I've got my eye, and despite the upgraded power (385hp 455!) it doesn't quite fit the bill of the '66 or '67. We'll see!

I have had numerous Chevrolets, Buicks, Oldsmobiles and I must think of the loss of Oldsmobile with lament almost every day because I pass by every other type of remaining GM dealer brand yet almost all of the GMs that I had that were favorites of mine were Oldsmobiles.
I believe the front bench was called the Stratobench , I believe this could be a W 32 , as this had the correct double scallops on the rear twin tail pipes balance
Bill Mitchell had style and the cars designed under him at GM showed it.
I just watched an early Mannix episode with a convertible Toronado in it. Don't know if it was a '66 but it's definitely a one-off. I think it's a George Harris creation. I'm a fan of these cars.
