    I think new adventures is my favourite R.E.M. album, closely followed by Green.
    I first listened to it, on cassette, with my sister when she was at uni in Bristol.
    We sat and listened all the way through, first silently, then a second time.
    We both loved it instantly, which is rare, maybe unique for me.
    Htwwwawigu is sublime.
    Undertow is enormous - Michaels voice in the second and third "I'm drowning..." does things to me. The anguish and length of "drowning" and "me", I often just rewind those lines and let them build, like blowing up a balloon.
    You and me is a beautiful love song.
    Binky the doormat was my first favourite song on the album.
    Great album.

    They should have hung it up after this album and cemented their legacy.
    This was the last record of their Warner Bros. deal, but then they went on and signed *another* 5-record deal which produced largely unremarkable and forgettable material.
    And I'm an R.E.M. fan.

    • @Issicra
      @Issicra Před 3 lety +1

      I'm trying to figure out how to say this: R.E.M. had a certain sound and if they strayed too far from it, they alienated a good chunk of their audience, but if they continued to put out "R.E.M." sounding songs, then those R.E.M.-isms become tiresome and cliche. Love 'em, but I think you're right. Shoulda just hung it up when Bill left.

    • @flyondonnie9578
      @flyondonnie9578 Před 3 lety +1

      I expect that if they’d known Bill was leaving they’d have broken up rather than signed that contract. The Contractual Obligation Era indeed saw a dramatic decline in quality.

    • @lisanewman9505
      @lisanewman9505 Před 3 lety +10

      I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. For the record, I love nearly all of R.E.M.'s stuff from 1981 to 1996. Everything for me during this time was classic, excellent, or very good. One, Monster, was less than the others but still largely successful. I like three of their final five (Up, Accelerate, and Collapse into Now), but they had stopped making great albums, as they had before. But for many of us who still went to the concerts, they were still great. I saw two shows on the Up tour and while one was only pretty good, the other was outstanding. The second Unplugged (from 2001) was strong too. I loved the 2003 concert I saw, and the DVD Perfect Square is phenomenal. The 2004 show I attended in Chicago was surprisingly great. I say "surprisingly" because I thought Around the Sun was mediocre. Yet the songs sounded much improved. And they were great in a way they weren't in the '80s and '90s: Peter Buck was doing long guitar solos. His extended guitar work on "She Just Wants to Be," for instance, in Chicago was a real shocker. Incidentally, R.E.M. Live is a disappointment. The 2004 concert I saw was far superior to it. But Live at the Olympia (released in 2009 and culled from five nights in Dublin) is fantastic (and one of the best live albums of the decade for me), as was the Accelerate concert at the United Center in 2008. They weren't doing oldies shows; they played the songs like they mattered--and they did. So, for people who only focus on the last five albums, I can understand the disappointment. But they were so good live, I was glad they soldiered on. I wouldn't have written this long reply if I didn't think they got it back for their last two albums (which were pretty good). They did, though. One more thing: my favorite R.E.M. song is "Country Feedback. (On the Monster 25th Anniversary release, Michael tells the crowd it's his favorite track as well as Bill's.) They performed so many stellar versions of the song post-Berry, which were better than the versions they performed on the Monster tour (when Buck hadn't nailed down the guitar solo). There's one at the Bridge School with Neil Young in 1998, the amazing job they did in Germany (captured on the Perfect Square DVD), and another with Nils Lofgren doing the solo. I know of a dozen or so extraordinary versions of "Country Feedback," all of them superior to the one on album. And again, that's my favorite song from the band. So, yes, despite a dip in quality on some of the later albums, their live stuff more than justifies their decision to continue, IMO.
