I'm 42 years old and been a 2 since my 20's. Just can't seem to break through.
Im level four and a half
I'm almost at a level 3. I noticed on a video you did a few weeks back on your headless guitar build. There were a number of comments that were "selected" for a prize. Is that actually you giving out stuff or someone trying to scam individuals using you as their platform?
Today is 1 year now, my 19th birthday.
The day I just started to playing guitar (I loved to play from my childhood and i finally did it at) in my 18th birthday and i think im starting the level 3 now I knoew I know everybody just keep saying that im too fast at learning it and i think thats just why if i want something really i will fight as best i could for it, Tyler you always giving me hope and i love your style and im a huge fan of prs too as you and i wish i could just use your super system but i couldn't because of my country's issue and the insane price ranges for me not everybody... anyway thanks for creating this interesting contents about guitar, Good Luck!

I'm at level 1. Just started playing guitar at the end of July. I'm working through some feelings of impatience. I want to be at level 3 NOW! I'm so excited and want to get to the place where I can play along with some of my favorite songs and start song writing and I know, I know I am not there yet. I know it will take time and practice and more practice, but I can't help feeling impatient. Love your videos. They really help keep me motivated. I know you're a much more advanced player and a lot of folks that watch your channel are too, but you never neglect the absolute beginner and I really appreciate that about your videos. Thanks, man.
You can start writing songs at any time, you'll learn. Just mess around on the guitar and you'll get a feel.
We live in an age of immediate gratification so it's hard to take the time to really learn something like guitar which can take many months or years to become proficient at.
It's like any other grind though, such as losing a lot of weight, or learning any complex skill - just go day by day and keep up the grind. In a couple years you'll be quite good! It might sound like a long time, but the alternative is to quit and when a couple years rolls around you'll have that really nagging thought of "man had I just been doing (x) this whole time then I would be really good by now!", which sucks to have (trust me I've had it myself!).
The more you practice and spend time with it you will get there
I taught myself guitar in 4th grade. I'm 23 now and am only level 2 because lazy. It takes work and practice & if you want it hard enough, you'll get there! My advice would be to learn some guitar theory like scales and technique, rather than notes of a song. It's easy to be good at, but sooooo hard to be amazing. Keep it up, you'll do great
For me, the hardest part of learning music is to get out of my comfort zone, learn different type of genres is the key to success. Metal music is my home, but I'll try to appriciate other genres as well. Recently I'll try listen to Country music, and I love it 🤣
Stopped playing when I got married/kids...for 20 years. Regrets. Wish YT existed. Now encouraging my true player son to NOT stop playing...to continue his journey. With YT and so many great teachers/talents...why would anyone ever stop playing guitar? I'm 60...hope to live and play well into my 90's.

Been playing for less than a year. I'm pretty confident as I pass that milestone I will start getting more properly into the third level, and stay there for a couple years before I find myself evolving in a significant manner
Tyler, this video struck a solidly emotional response from me, seriously. I am at the very beginning stages of level 3 in your outline here. I want more and at the stage where most stop progressing, I think. I am stuck it seems at this point with a few cool licks in the pentatonic (weak major vocabulary) and seem to have hit a speed plateau. It feels like the next jump would launch me into the stratosphere if I could just get grounded in Level 3 and develop a more versatile vocabulary. This video seriously motivated me today - thank you.

Hey bro, i was there too when i was 16 years old and gave up for 10 years. I'm 26 now and picking the guitar back up wishing i hadn't stopped, keep playing and you'll exceed your expectations i promise good luck
yeah i feel thats where im at. im practicing adding some simple triads that fit the notes im playing at the moment. i started with simple stuff like the beavis and butthead theme, but then i look for songs that have triads for chords and try to improvise like 4 or five notes in between some chord changes i saw in those songs. but you know everyone learns differently
"finding your voice", i think this is one of the most beautiful way anyone has ever put it down for me about playing guitar
i’m currently working on level 3-4, trying to work an learn theory with my teacher, and even though it takes work to study and get better, it feels good to feel that your understanding of the instrument is growing.
I'm on level 1, i started playing this week starting jan. 11th, 2024, when my father let me use his strat that he doesnt touch anymore. i learned the A and G chord and so i am working on my transitions while trying to keep the notes ring without fret buzz. after fiddling around with it 20 minutes in one part of the day then another 20 another part of the same day, still practicing those transitions, im getting faster. The level of progress that i am seeing right now is inspiring and addicting because i can see myself improving as i practice. tonight i plan to practice with the metronome to stay in tune and time. im not even using any amps or anything, just the guitar. ill do the amp later when i feel comfortable and have my own guitar.
Sounds to me like you've found your voice at the end there! I think it's too easy to think we aren't showing enough feeling, or who we are through music. When you take a step back though and listen as if you're someone else you realize that it's actually not true at all. Everything you create sounds like you, because you made it :D
Seeing all those guitars I would love to see a studio tour/guitar collection video.
I'd say I'm somewhere around level 2.5-3, just starting to regain my passion for the guitar. This video has kinda inspired me and I'll go and play now. Great vid
I'm on this weird mix of level 2 and 4. Somehow I skipped 3, but I'm finally going back and checking it out and I'm confused as to why I didn't learn this stuff sooner because it just makes sense, but then I realized it's because I'm having to go back and unlearn step 1 because I'm self taught and I learned it all wrong, so I have to fix it before I can actually put step 3 in my bag of tricks.
Take lessons, download video courses, read a book, do anything besides learn how I did. At one point I almost considered the unthinkable and bought a bass, but hey, I'm still moving forward.

I am at level 2 but about to move on to level 3, I guess. I started playing guitar when I was a teenager but never really learnt how to play. So I lacked a lot of theory and technique, but was able to play a few songs, even some more complicated stuff. But basically, I was playing the same stuff over and over again. However, I stopped playing a few years ago.
Last year, I suddenly had the urge to start playing again, and this time to really learn it. And with the help of a CZcams colleague of yours, I have learned incredibly much during the last couple of months, and I am finally beginning to express myself on the instrument if you will. No day passes without me picking up the guitar. And I love everything about it.
By the way, your videos have played a huge role in motivating me again. So thank you for that!

Great video !!! I try to focus the same as I did growing up pitching. Location, location, location. Then the curve, change up, maybe a slider. The work you put in as a youngster applies to the guitar. Awesome man. Made my day. You got a leg !!!!

I played for 6-7 years though high school and college and a bit beyond. Slowly found less and less time (life’s like that sometimes I guess). After about a 20 year hiatus I realized how much I missed it. Started playing again and realized how much I lost. Found a local teacher and after over a year and a half am beyond where I was when I was playing all those years ago. I too found Tyler’s channel along with others. Depending on your musical likes check out Uncle Ben Eller, Robert Baker, Marty Schwartz, Rick Beato, Rhett Shull and Tim Pierce. Those guys plus Tyler are my go-to channels.

I'm a great chord changer and can play with hammer on's and pull off's. I just now am trying lead. Learning it and what the scales are. Great video as always.

I've been playing trombone for the past 5 years of my life but have only more or less recently picked up guitar as a hobby and was quickly sucked down the rabbit hole of everything it has to offer, but having that prior musical experience really makes all the difference even when the instruments could not be more different.
Really interesting video. When I was at leave two I started to learn the banjo. So taking techniques from that into the guitar, such as dingier rolls. Helped me really advance faster on the guitar with certain fragments from different levels.
This video inspired me so much to start learning again. First tried a year or so ago as an adult and the biggest misstake was that I bought my guitar(s) online. I tried a few really cheap ones over a few months, always ending up returning them or selling them because none of them really fitted me is that makes sens. I also took some free online courses and none of them didn´t really either teach in a way I understood. Maybe it would be time to go to a guitar store and try out a few guitars and start again.
Think we all had no idea what to do after we completed our beginner stages

It’s hard to place myself anywhere. Never been taught any lessons anything at all. I picked up a guitar about 2yrs ago, started learning faster about how to fix them more than playing them. But I am at a point now where I can pretty much play along with any song. I learn something new every single day

I got lost in theory and stopped playing for 8 years. Picked it up a few months ago, did repairs , got new strings and tried again. Looked about intervalic improvisation. It is opening up everything. Knowing the notes on the fretboard imo now is vital.

Great video. I would add to level 3 or 4 is understanding your gear. Setting up your guitar, understand amp and pedal settings, interfaces, and most importantly.. finding your sound and style. I’m at a okay 3.5 level and its discouraging at time. But it’s important to keep playing

I am currently between level 2 and 3... I absolutely love to Improvise over minor songs... which might be holding be back at this stage because I probably neglect practicing tecniques and hand syncronisation etc... Thank you for your inspiration tho to keep on getting better and better.... Maybe one day I will take a deeper look into Music theory and strict practice routines... but Imprv over songs just makes me so unbelieveably happy ... for me it is still all about fun at the end of the day.. and while I still have the biggest smile on my face after a 5 min blues solo... I have nothing to regret in life ;) Thank you so much for your content
I liked these levels you came up with, and how you tied in different genre skillsets - I've been trained primarily in flamenco/south american music styles on nylon-string guitar, but I play a lot of electric guitar in rock/punk bands... while thinking about my own skillset I realised I've never tried sweep picking since I play with my fingers - I'd say I'm at a level 4 due to learning theory, improvisation, etc. might have to try learning to sweep pick though seems pretty dope

This was a very good analogy of levels and I agree. I am 58 and at 3.75 to 4. I know my limits on speed and what I can and cannot do and will never progress past this level. I am good with that because I can play at my level and enjoy it. I will say one thing that actually got me to progress was no more running scales, no more new chord shapes no more difficult phrase learning. It was one thing that Ben Eller said. Stop playing parts of a song and stop playing riffs. Learn the whole song on everything you play and learn it to the point its clean and not sloppy. This made me a better guitar player hands down. Again great job!

I’m at level 4 now, I’ve been playing for a year and a half now, but in this 1.5 amazing year guitar has been my life and I’ve been playing like 7-8 hours everyday…

I really enjoy watching your videos, I am an avid guitarist and I have been playing for about 10 years. I got to tell you I don't think there is 5 levels of guitar learning or mastering , I believe you simply start by getting your first guitar , then getting familiar with it , and falling in love with Playing and practicing, and then you simply develop your own style and you keep on playing and never lose the passion to play and enjoy the instrument, so I counted 3 levels 😉

Interesting concept, the one about finding your guitar voice. Inspiring! This video feels very much focused on electric guitar, which is understandable, but it would be interesting to hear your opinion on the same subject but towards acoustic guitar instead.

I learned the guitar in my early teens, but I never advanced beyond level 2 imho. But after about 5 to 6 years of not playing, at all, and not even owning a guitar, some kind of motivation really struck me. I want to know how to play. So I geared up, and started again. I had to go back to level one to get the hang of it again. I am now in level two again. A lot of the stuff naturally came back, but I am now really working on these pentatonic scales. But I feel for me at least, basic Music theory needs to be the next step imho. Knowing Scales is all fun and games, but I find it extremely frustrating to not understand the "Why". That's why I am now working on not memorizing the Fret board, but to understand it. And It feels like this is the way for me to keep motivation going.
Hi Tyler. I appreciate your detailed approach to teaching guitar and providing a framework for us to understand where we are on the spectrum of beginner to advanced player. I am also a paying subscriber to guitar super system and am enjoying those courses, as well. I do have some feedback on GSS, however. I struggle with some of the exercises because there doesn't appear to be accompanying tabs or charts to show the starting position on the fretboard for each exercise. I have to slow down the video speed in order to find the starting position and watch repeatedly to understand what notes you are playing in each exercise. Maybe I'm missing something? Anyway, I very much enjoy the way you teach, explain, and inspire. Rock on!
I main bass. I don't know what level I am, since I just pickup guitar every now and then. But I know the following after a year:
1. Triads, every inversion, anywhere along the neck. I can identify most notes in each string so I have lot of freedom in that.
2. Major scale, how to form major scales, and how to do it everywhere along the neck.
3. Chords, how to form chords, which notes are flat/sharp, how to add extensions, etc. I have a lot voicings now from each string. I now how what chord scales are now, what chords are in a major scale, as long as its diatonic I can figure that out, can play chord scales vertically and horizontally. But only major scales. Can also confidently drop notes to make it sound better or just because I don't want awkward fingering.
4. Basic soloing, again just major scales, don't know any other scale lol.
5. I don't know any techniques like sweep picking, insane bends, my taps are probably basic at most. I mostly play jazz chord melody. Focusing on rhythm. I also practice funk strumming, like Cory Wong. But I like jazz more.
6. Can figure things out by ear. Mostly coming from playing bass. Same as my theory knowledge, mostly came from bass.
I'm probably level one.

Since you made this video of the level of guitar playing and you have the guitar super system, can you please update the website and put a section that's grouped the program BY LEVEL so that beginners or new users of your interface can easily navigate your website and follow a specific program according to their playing level? Just like you said before, the best guitar lessons are always descriptive, not prescriptive so please describe that to us. Think of it as what subject to take this semester. that would boost your online guitar course I guarantee.

25 years later and I'm still at level 1. Well that was the kick in the junk I wasn't expecting.
I am somewhere in the middle of level 2 and started loosing motivation and this got it back at least a little bit longer
I can thump and selective pick as well as tap out some crazy patterns but sweeping I just can't sweep it is by far the most difficult technique to learn on the guitar. It is the bane of my existence.

The levels vary for me. For example, I'm taking a huge interest in building my personal voice and style, but at the same time I'm still working on level 3 and even level 2 techniques.

Been playing for a year and a half now, and been practicing a couple hours a day for most of that. I'd say in at level 3.5. I've got decent alternate picking shred speed, solid tapping and hybrid picking, I'm pretty comfortable improvising on stage, and got some solid music theory knowledge, but sweeping still needs a lot of work. I haven't tried learning much music with sweep picking that I can use to power through some progress. The only one I've learned is the sweepy part (supposedly Tim alternate picked it in on the record, which my brain doesn't compute) of 40oz off of the Most Hated EP. Honestly, not the hardest sweep shapes, and there are really only 3. I think I'm at a good pace, and relatively content with the progress. Still want to be worlds better in a few years. Kinda feels like lifting in the gym. Even though you've made progress that your past self would be incredibly envious of, it's never enough.
Good work man. I've been playing almost 3 years and I'd say I'm in 3 too. Minor/major/pentatonic/blues scales all over fretboard, some Steve Vai and Eric Johnson songs, improvisation, and starting to learn shredding. I'd say the best thing for you to do would be to slow down some of the stuff and get the notes sounding clean especially when you attempt songs above your skill level. There is never an upper limit, it is impossible to be a master. No one will be a master, not Tim Henson, not Guthrie Govan. But you will be better than you are today and that's a wonderful thing, Imagine the noob when you started watching you today he'd think you're a wizard.
I wish you’d do a video on Johnny Ramone. Now he has a style that’s frequently overlooked or mocked by the guitar elite. To play “Surfin Bird” like The Ramones do live, with the accuracy and the stamina, the low slung guitar, is something few truly get right. Additionally I’d suggest it’s American Rock and Roll at its most primal and fundamental. It’s The Beach Boys on Meth.

I would’ve said I’m probably at level 2, but I’m forcing myself down to level 1.
I’ve learned to play along with a few songs that I love but I’ve never really had a proper ground-up kind of tutelage on the guitar. I’m currently taking online lessons with the aim of creating a foundation I can properly build on.
Well i would say it could go either way on level 5. You could find your guitar voice or you can make your voice match your guitar style. Using the meaning of your lyrics and emotion as a medium.
I was going to say other things and I know it's been a while for you but music was the right choice. You are good but I played all sports including soccer and your only "real" well formed kick that just barely made the cut was your last kick. You need way more sweep in your kick and better ball contact and more lift. I know you are just messing around and 53 yards is still really good but I'm talking about pro status kicking and elite athleticism. You are smart and good at things and I think you made the right choice with music because you are very skilled and well rounded.
