Sören Sieg: 10 Variations on a Russian Birthday Song (Tokyo Recorder Ensemble)

I have always been a fan of variations because this form allows me as a composer to combine the strongest formal unity with the sharpest emotional contrasts. Last January my friend Sabine Huttel asked me to write an arrangement of a famous Russian birthday song for string quartet. I immediately fell in love with that song and decided to write variations on it.
The mixture of humor, irony, sentimentality, melancholy and joy in this song seems to be typically Russian - at least as I have learned to know Russia in the novels of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, and Jerofejev.
Originally I wanted to write 12 variations - but more and more ideas came into my mind, and I tried to explore all the hidden corners of that tune and find as many surprising twists as possible - jocular, playful, thoughtful, tender, yearning, in love, crazy, cheeky, desperate, coltish, triumphant. So I ended up with 16, but for this premiere at the Tokyo Recorder Festival on August 24, 2019, I had to shorten it again to 10 variations and to ten minutes. In October 2019 the Toyko Recorder Ensemble played the premiere of the full-length 16 variations in Tokyo, I will publish it here soon.

Ich war immer ein großer Fan von Variationen, denn diese Form erlaubt es mir als Komponisten, die größten emotionalen und stilistischen Gegensätze mit der größten musikalischen Geschlossenheit zu verbinden. Im Januar dieses Jahres nun bat mich meine alte Musikerfreundin Sabine Huttel, das berühmteste russische Geburtstagslied für Streichquartett zu arrangieren. Während des Arrangierens verliebte ich mich in das Stück und fasste den Entschluss, Variationen darüber zu schreiben.
Die Mischung aus Schalk, Ironie, Sentimentalität, Melancholie und Freude in diesem Lied und in diesem Text scheint mir ganz typisch russisch zu sein - so jedenfalls, wie ich Russland in den Romanen und Erzählungen von Dostojewski, Tolstoi, Gogol und Jerofejew kennengelernt habe.
Ursprünglich sollten es nur 12 Variationen werden - aber beim Komponieren kamen mir immer mehr Ideen, und ich habe versucht, alle verborgenen Winkel dieser Melodie zu erkunden und so viele überraschende Wendungen wie möglich zu finden - scherzhaft, verspielt, nachdenklich, zärtlich, sehnsüchtig, verliebt, verrückt, frech, verzweifelt, übermütig, triumphierend. Und so wurden es am Ende 16 Variationen, mein opus magnum mit 22 Minuten Gesamtlänge. Für diese Uraufführung auf dem Tokyo Recorder Festival am 24. August 2019 musste ich das Stück allerdings wieder auf zehn Variationen und zehn Minuten kürzen. Das Tokyo Recorder Ensemble hat die Originalversion mit allen 16 Variationen im Oktober 2019 uraufgeführt, auch diese Aufnahme werde ich hier bald veröffentlichen.

Another wonderful set of variations! I was hesitant to order it with no preview besides the adorable CZcams animated Russian video. You really captured the essence of it. Can’t wait to share with my quintet! I like the rich harmonies you set in the initial exposition- a new sound from you- but other variations have echos from African suites!

Very nicely played. Beautiful set of variations on a theme with my particular favorite being #10. I would like a tambourine added to that movement. I am part Russian (mother and grandmother even spoke it) and I can feel the Russian style of folk music in this piece. Bravo!!
