    In this video I talk about a recent trip to the doctor with my service dog and how an out of control dog made that trip so much more difficult than it needed to be for my service dog. I also talk about training public access to your service dog and how you can prepare your service dog to expect the unexpected when working out in public.

      My first "WTF just happened?" was before my dog was even officially an SDIT. he was about 15 months and we were in a pet friendly mall practicing settling. I'd placed myself in a bit of a side aisle, sitting on a bench with my dog at my feet. I had the handle of the leash around my wrist, the string on my white cane around my right wrist, and I was looking at my phone for a couple of minutes answering some texts and basically trying to convey to my dog that he's still supposed to be passive while I'm not looking at him. When suddenly I feel a tug on the leash in one direction and my dog standing up and backing away. Mind you about six months earlier a woman in my city had actually been robbed and had her dog stolen so I flew to my feet. Came face to face with this lady who I just sort of stared at... She went "Oh I thought the dog looked bored, so I figured he could come over and get some pets from my kids!" My brain just couldn't process it all, so I just yanked the leash out of her hand and walked away.
      over a year later me and my dog enter a store and as soon as we step through the gates, I hear a grown man yell in a high-pitched voice "Look! A dog!" Next thing I know this like 2yo toddler has darted up, right in front of my feet, and is petting away on my dog's back. My dog just stopped, because there was now an obstacle in front of my feet, and just sort of stood there for the 8-10 seconds it took dear daddy to figure out what he'd just essentially cued his offspring to do, and came running to intervene. No apology or anything he just picked his child up and scurried off. Meanwhile my dog was still just standing still and looked up at me like "Uh so... tha thappened?"

      I had the most weird series of events happen one after another during a trip to Walgreens (drug store) with my SDIT. He was 5 months old and had just passed his CGC, so public access was all new. We were in line at the pharmacy, and my dog was in his new gear with do not pet signage everywhere. (I'm convinced that the number of patches a dog wears is directly correlated to how many people will distract them) A heard a squealing sound from our right, and a woman came screeching over to my dog and flounced right in front of him and grabbed him by his cheeks, ignoring me completely. I politely tried to tell her not to distract him, but before I could she squealed that his paws are so BIG, as she lifted my dog's paw up to her face. I was stunned. She started cranking his leg up and down, lifting it up as far as it would go. Before I could get a response out, she asked if she could PICK HIM UP and started to lift him up without waiting for my response. My dog is a big German Shepherd boy, and he was already 55 lbs. I had finally had enough and told her NO. A few minutes later, it was our turn at the counter. I was talking with the pharmacist when I felt my dog pulling. I turned around and there was a grown man taking a photo of us. I told him more sharply than I meant to that he should ask before taking a photo of someone with their back turned at the pharmacy of all places. I already had zero spoons when we walked in... it was wild. Welcome to your new job, Zeus! lol!

    I was walking out of a grocery store and coming in the doors was a huge man with two ginormous malmutes straining at the ends of their leashes. My girl is vested and obviously a service dog. They were not and the handler looked up at me as I firmly say "Leave it!" to my girl, and mouths the words "Oh Sh**!" My heart sank, that he didn't have control of them. Fortunately, being a huge guy, he was able to drag them sideways and away from the sliding doors and my girl was perfect as we walked quickly by them, not engaging and generally being a rockstar! Thank you so much for your oh-so-valuable tips!

      My well-behaved, non-reactive dog was walking on a leash one night when a loose dog popped out of the dark, attacked him and badly injured him. Now he's fearful of large male dogs of certain breeds. I know that it was tempting to show off your dog' good behavior, but it might have been a better idea to have waited for the man to clear the area. Once your dog has been attacked, it's hard to get her back to where you need her to be.

    • @kylaallen822
      @kylaallen822 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @juliebrown8375 A good thought but unfortunately, The man wasn't clearing the area. He pulled his dogs to one side and just stood there. My best option was to get her passed as quickly as possible. There was no showing off going on, as I would never endanger my girl, especially for vanity. I am extremely aware that a 12# yap-yap can ruin a good $20k service dog with one attack, because the service dog would then be hyper focused on her own safety instead of tasking. Those lil guys pop out of nowhere in the grocery store and definitely freak me out now! Lol

    Oh my gosh, I experienced something like this at the hospital when I went in for a cardiac procedure. The person in the bed next to me in PreOp, had a “service dog” who was trying to get to Finn. Finn could see it under the bed and through the curtain and just looked at it as if to say “what’s your malfunction?” Of course I was freaking out already. My husband had him hop up and put him on the bed with me. A nurse came in, saw Finn and said “I didn’t even know he was there”

    My puppy (he’s 2 lol) all of a sudden started being reactive to guys. So I went to a college campus to let him just people watch. I started walking and about 15 gardeners showed up on lawn mowers or foot with leaf blowers. So not only were the guys his trigger but they had blowers on their backs. They had hats of all kinds with sunglasses. So I panicked. Jackson walked through it perfectly. At the end of the moment he looked at my nervous heart and goes “what?” Like it was nothing 😂

    I walk the outskirts of Comic Con every year, to make sure my SD continues to handle costumes just fine, if I'm feeling up to it we'll go to areas a bit more crowded after doing the outskirts. There are a few other costume events we go to as well to just walk around so she gets somewhat regular exposure, and there's always a crazy variety and equally crazy people.

I politely said that he was working and she couldn’t pet him at that time. What did she do? Literally laid on the store floor in front of my dog telling him how horrible his life must be working all the time. Well, his life was the best and he loved his job. We went into Walmart and while we were shopping. A couple who had a shih Tzu was in the store. Their dog went berserk ,growling, snapping and barking at my Mishka, an Ausky. She got a little startled and went on guard. She kept looking up at me and then at the furry fury across from us not sure what to do.
    I was scared to death that this little shih tzu that seemed like it was just a little ball of teeth and fur was going to attack as they only had her on a small leash and it was going haywire . They kept fighting the fuzzball until we quickly made our selection and left the aisle.
    We had trained around other dogs but not around " vinicious kanids".😂
    Mishka handled it well. I was able to bring her back on task and avoid the other dog. But what a ride.😮

    LOL I LOVE those eggs! You are so right about a SDIT! My GSD has a problem with small dogs and some types of men. I can't have a conversation with him about celebrating diversity, so I manage his behavior by correcting him appropriately. Toy Poodles derail him from tasking in a second. I have chronic illness, so he is a frequent flyer at the hospital. The ER staff know him by name, and he loves it. His behavior is always on point at the hospital, which I am grateful for. A few weeks ago, they accommodated him in Radiology by putting a lead drape on him so he could stay with me. So kind! Your story is hilarious! Why in the world was a pet dog at your doctor's office? lol! The only thing we can expect "out there" is that the unexpected will happen. We make ourselves scarce as soon as we spot a flexi-leash. I try to prepare by having a treat bag, healthy snacks (I pack a meal for him before going to the ER), and plenty of supplies for cleaning up an accident. People ask what I keep in my dog's saddlebags. They are filled with paper towels, wipes, and poop bags. ESA Pig! LOL! We are pretty weird in SF! 🤗

    You have a lot of great reminders in this video. I love the fact you have a good attitude about things that would normally upset most people. I try to remember to stay calm as the dogs can read if we are tense. We are out with our SD poodle and get compliments about how well mannered he is. People are also shocked when they see a 60lb poodle come out from under a table and say they had no idea he was there. Thats what we love hearing.

      It's taken years to be able to have a good attitude about these things (and sometimes, I am not able to easily brush it off lol! I'm human!). But because my job was working guide dogs and I've been doing it for so long, being professional was really important. I also started in service dogs when there was much less knowledge about them with the general public. Now I feel like I live in a luxurious world full of people who know so much more about how to behave around service dogs and are teaching their children the same!

He's also generally anxious and it's complicated. He's cute, but distrusts strangers. I've had off leash children try to sneak attack pet him. As a result i carry him and keep him on my body at all times. We have a vest that says "rescue in training do not pet" not that that helps.

      I have a zillion stories about the nutty things I've done throughout my 25 years as a guide dog handler, some super embarrassing at the time but funny later. Now I just cackle at everything I do that's silly. For example, I VERY STRONGLY recommend that when getting on a bus, before sitting down, make sure the seat is empty.
      I once got on an early morning bus, and my then young guide dog at my direction of "left, find a chair?" Promptly took me to a seat behind the driver. (We'd been working on targetting seats, so I was super proud of her.)
      I crowed "good girl" enthusiastically, delighted she'd found a seat and thinking I was a badass handler and trainer. I turned around, sat down, and "OOOOF! HUH? Oh hi there."
      Without checking, I'd plunked myself down in some dude's lap and startled him awake. I leaped up like something burned, sprinted across to another seat, and in my haste, tripped over someone's feet, fell flat on my face, my bag went flying, and my Labrador took that opportunity to greet everyone in her immediate vicinity.
      Oy. Life with a dog is never dull.

    Since in my country the only extra access you gain with a SD is pretty much to grocery stores, entertainment such as zoos and cinemas and medical facilities, other than that you will meet dogs in almost every place including crowded places, restaurants and a lot of malls (some prohibit pets due to store setup with fresh open food)
    That said i cannot afford a SD and also so far theres only one or two SD - adult autistic teams in the entire country because SDs just are not common at all outside of guide and mobility dogs. Therefore my dog is hometrained. Unfortunately he was attacked by an offleash swiss mountain dog TWICE and once when he was an adult by an offleash Frenchie in the midle of the night and out of nowhere. Every single time i almost choke my dog out because even though he was leashed IF he injures the other dog you can bet ill have some problems soley because he is a large black working line GSD and not a Golden Retriever.
    Oh and the neighbors kids who tried to pull his long tail from behind on several occasions when he was 1 year old. Now hes 3 and these kids are absolutely terrified of him (luckily) but im glad ive taught my dog to ignore unexpected rough handling. Ive pulled on him, pretended to strike him with my hand or an object, grab his body parts, walked into him, laid down while doing so, sitting standing... just trying to cover all the weirdness that comes with people 😂
    Now he cant be bothered by people surprising him with physical touch, except if its someone he loves, he still goes craycray over that 😂

    Great tip to do that while not watching us, i will work on this with my dh with both of our service dogs. We so get the treat stuff after and event that was trying, makes them just love it all the more. So get the spoons things. Hind-site is 20/20. My weird things, my pup just started full access, we began training more detailed doctor visits, I had an urgent care so DH came in case testing and things got too complicated and too tight, some places just don’t have the room. Well thankfully he was there as I was not well, in came the tech terrified of dogs, no idea why they sent her, she ran in front of my down dog squealing and running by and literally waving her hand in front of my dogs face, she held the clip board and began to climb the cabinet and the walls. My dog was so confused, she thought she was being called by this tech like at the vet and stood up and stepped forward, I said leave it and she stopped looked at me and came back to place by DH. I quickly got my DH and the dog out of the building as I had to calm this gal down and off the wall as she was going to hurt herself. I totally understood her fear but was horrified how the urgent care did not handle any of this well. They removed the tech, apologized to me and I got my care. My spoons were gone, I was getting sicker and barely could remember why I was there but I knew I needed care and my team was waiting for me so I muscled on to finish. We had to retrain a lot and spend a lot of time with improper human behaviors but my dog aced it. Scary that a person behaves like they are welcoming a dog with their prey behavior when terrified. Never seen such a thing in a medical place. Tough for folks in that situation. My SD is 7 and today if she stands it is to get out of the way or I ask the professional to please wait so I can relocate her so nothing falls on my SD and she is not in their way, sad to say these rooms are too small, another person can barely fit. That has to change it is a health issue for a lot of reasons. Glad it all worked out for us and for you. Prayers to better journeys, and so much to learn from things. Keep sharing =caring.

    Does anyone know how to stop my service dog from having squeaky farts in public? When he gets happy for treats, he lets out a very high pitched fart and it scares him a but, then he starts smelling his own butt... Every time he does it, I start uncontrollably laughing, luckily I can't smell it. I hope he never lets out a stinky fart, my life would be over if he did that in public near people because I would have to act like I did it.
    Also, I went to an anime convention last month and I saw a handler in full cosplay with an amazing service dog. I didn't even notice the doggo until we were done getting autographs by Daman Mills, I always look down when I walk because I can easily trip over the smallest objects in 4in platform shoes, and I noticed the doggo. He was a very fluffy poodle and his hair was very shiny, I wonder what shampoo and conditioner they use. There was a cosplay contest later that day and the handler and doggo competed, it was so awesome to see them both on stage! I didn't bring my service dog since he is older and isn't preforming as well so I didn't want to stress him out, I am getting a prospect this year though.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Service Dogs at work are covered by a different part of the ADA than that which lets them accompany a handler in public spaces. They are a workplace accommodation covered by Title 1 of the ADA. You will likely need to make a disability accommodation request to your employer. You can find out more info here where they also have the contact info for JAN which can better help you with your question: www.dol.gov/agencies/odep/program-areas/employers/accommodations#:~:text=Under%20Title%20I%20of%20the,done%20during%20the%20hiring%20process.

      @@DoggyU Thank you! My accommodation request was denied. I am onwer training my SD and planned to have him out as a SD and not as a SDIT around May. He is doing really good. We are finessing and proofing our public skills currently. He turned 2 on 2/14. He showed immature/puppy tendencies until around December. He is now presenting a more workmanlike approach to being out and about.
      Because of this I didn't push the issue with work. Although without him my anxiety around food and other people is on the rise. One off his tasks is to check for nuts, almonds, pecans, etc. I am allergic and have an anaphylaxis reaction to them. Even dust from someone eating them at their desk as I walk by can cause the reaction. He also does DPT for anxiety and ADHD, retrieves meds, and alerts me when anxiety it building.
      I fear work will not allow him. Note: I work in an office setting of a company that sales food products. My office is away from the food items.
