Glad this background material is w/ the extended edition. Clarifies a lot about the ideas behind the characterization of Thranduil and, unfortunately, shows that too much was left out of the movies. It is really the the more personal aspects of the movies which make them worth watching and tells the story - not so much the huge battle scenes.
It would be interesting to know what's this scene with Thranduil and the Dwarves at 17:41 is about. They deleted a few interesting character and backstory driven scenes (Bilbo planting the acorn, Thranduil and Gandalf talking about the white gems and Thranduil's wife, Gandalf's eulogy during the funeral) while leaving in all the fighting (Legolas moments, Chariot scene).
+redcrabdue I wasn't too mad about the acorn scene, but the eulogy, Thranduil's wife, ... those story driven scenes really should have been added. The final shot of Thranduil here was probably also intended for an epilogue which never made it into the movie. Which really is sad, since it was apparently shot and this movie badly needs a longer epilogue, some actual resolve to certain plot threads and characters.
+themagicalblingbling It's interesting because on the LotR movies they also shot epilogue scenes with Legolas and Gimli that weren't used in the Extended Edition. Peter Jackson basically did the same on the Hobbit. Shooting epilogue scenes with Thranduil and maybe other characters and deleting or shortening them. I agree with you that the Hobbit trilogy needed more epilogue. When I went to the cinema to see BotFA I expected long and satisfying epilogue scenes for the important characters like in Retun of the King and more scenes of the return journey (bilbo stopping at the troll hoard and maybe one short scene at Rivendell or with Beorn) and when I realised those kind of scenes were not in the theatrical edition, I had high hopes for the Extended Edition. But there are no such scenes in the EE too. Maybe I just expected or fantasized too much. ;)
redcrabdue Indeed, this movie really needed a longer epilogue, such as some explanation on the future of Erebor and Dale, Bard's coronation, the Elves and men getting a share of the treasure, some resolution for Thranduil and the trollhoard. Two thing I would have also absolutely loved is a glimpse of a friendship between Thranduil and Bilbo, as happens in the book, and some foreshadowing of Balin's journey to Moria. They had the perfect opportunity to set that up for the fellowship and it would have been a lot more relevant than the Aragorn reference. I don't think regular movie viewers will have a clue what Balin is doing in Moria during Fellowship, which could easily have been resolved in a 30 second dialogue in this movie.
Where did this documentary come from? Is it part of one of the Appendix's from the extended versions, or director's cut's? Please let me know I'd like to get this on dvd. Thanks!
