  • This is my coverage of the 2023 National Periodic Test of the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System, which includes the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts. I tuned in to WKYC and WKDD, as well as Nickelodeon on Spectrum (in hopes to see maybe what the alert would look like from a national and/or cable operated EAS headend unit's standpoint, but I did not see anything) and my personal radio station, WYLK.
My SAGE EAS Endec relayed the alert (via WKDD, one of it's monitors) just fine, and my iPhone and other stations I was tuned to also relayed it fine. The BetaBrite I have hooked up to my ENDEC even scrolled the alert text as well!

That LED sign is pretty cool
And you run your own local station awesome
I’m still working on my video, but I recorded about six or more different channels from around the United States east and west just having some technical difficulties with my antenna PVR at the moment .

I unfortunately wasn’t able to film it. I was at school when this happened. Everyone in my class turned up their phones to the maximum volume so when the alert went off, it was loud. It was cool to hear everyone’s phones go off all at once.

That's pretty cool. I have an old Universal Radio digital decoder that pretty much says "open: stand by", followed by "message ends". with the digital signal. I am not going to go into the mode that I used on the hardware. From a digital radio freak.

The audio said eastern time, but the text in different times zones showed the local time. I noticed that when I was recording it, and watching it on West Coast channels.

they went off at 3PM. some going off at 11AM. lets just say. class is forced to sing. then the hallway and our class just becomes UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU from everyone's phone going off. in the middle of being forced to sing

How did you do that with that led sign?!

The LED sign is a BetaBrite model from Adaptive Microsystems. I got it on eBay for about $50 or so. I then had to purchase the sign's programming cable, which was another $15, also on eBay. That cable plugs one end (an RJ11 jack actually) into the BetaBrite, and the other end has a serial cable adapter. That serial cable was then plugged into the rear of my Sage EAS Endec (Model 1822) in to a COM port, and via the Devices config menu of the Endec, I configured it to treat that COM port as an LED sign. So basically anytime the ENDEC receives and/or sends an alert, it will send the text of that alert as serial data over to the BetaBrite (via the Alpha LED sign protocol) and keep it there while the alert is active. You can even change if it scrolls, or just shows a few words at a time, and stuff like that, but I prefer the scrolling.
When there is no active alert, the ENDEC will constantly send the current date and time to the BetaBrite and update it every minute with the new time.
      I hope this helped!
