That pump makes oil foamy and as such oil use more space. Also car should be level or slightly jacked up on oposite side of the fill plug. Another great video. Keep it up.
Yes, pump is great for extracting oil but rubbish for this. I use a large funnel with a long piece of hose attached. Feed hose down to fill point and top up funnel somewhere convenient. No fighting a syringe and no foaming of the oil.
@milosilic1456 James' fill plug was facing the back of the car, and he jacked it up in the back, which makes sense to me, but if I get you right, you suggest jacking up the front of the car if the fill plug faces the back. Or am I getting you wrong?
Well done James, another car rescued to live on for years to come
I can see the house next door is for sale and a bonus for the new home owner is a on street mechanic for all there car needs 😂😂 well done mate love the videos best on you tube 👍
Nice one! You should be proud of this, even just having the confidence to take the job on let alone also managing to sort it 👍🏻
I think you deserve two pats on the back for that job well done.
Gearbox work is absolutely the most intricate work you can do on a car - but you nailed it big time. Full respect.
I'm well impressed. I have been a DIY car guy for 40 years, never would attempt a gearbox....good on you!
Thank you for the testing of before and now I always thought there was a fault with my gear box but looking at your testing I now know it’s my wheel bearing
Well done. You probably saved £1000. Plus the confidence the job was done correctly. I would suggest wetting the bearings with gearbox oil during assembly especially if leaving a box dry for a while before fitting and running for first time. 👏👏👏
Been looking forward to this one. 👌
Didn't disappoint...👏
Great video James love all the detail we'll done another one saved
This is exactly right, don't worry about it!
Fill till it drips out when the car is level, the prescribed amount of oil must be when totally empty (new or rebuild)
Monsieur, you are really spoiling us.
Good job! One thing I recomend to do - change those rusty cooling hose steel clamps. One of those on the upper radiator hose failed on me last month. Coolant everywhere, had to tow my car to the shop.
Can fill through the reverse switch. No need for a pump. Just a funnel. Good job.
I didn't know those pumps existed! I normally use a hacked brake bleeder.
Nice one, good job. To get that last litre in, just warm it up a bit and run it through the gears. Once they’re lubricated it should take the rest. I bought one of those pumps, they are good!
And the oil pump can be used for engine oil changes via the dip stick tube ... & saves having to crawl under the car to remove under trays & sump plugs.
That’s what I use my oil pump for makes the job so much cleaner
It's worth saying that filling a gearbox for the first time after it's been overhauled is a bit different to changing the gearbox oil as a service job. When the box has been stripped down then it's full of air when it goes back in. Pockets of air can get caught inside the gearbox casing when you try to fill it up again, especially inside the diff housing, so the gearbox often won't take the full amount of oil it's supposed to. Drive the car around a little bit, or run it back and forth a few times each day if it's off the road due to the MoT having run out, and you'll usually find that, after a week or so, it'll take a bit more oil, maybe up to another half-a-litre. Needless to say, this issue tends to be worse with front- or four-wheel drive vehicles due to them usually having a diff housing built into the gearbox casing where rear-wheel drive gearboxes generally don't, aside from vehicle like Porsches and Alfa-Romeos with transaxles...
I have exactly the same problem with the gearbox in a Skoda Fabia. I have already bought the bearing and will start repairing it soon.
You should be justly proud. Taking on a gearbox isn’t for the feint hearted
Great job. The other jobs are pretty easy. The window regulator often fails on Skodas and the airbag light will just be a loose connection. Get it a new timing belt and water pump and a service and it will be a great little car.
well done mate, proper job as we say here in Cornwall. i wouldn't ever have even considered taking a gearbox apart before, but now if i need the spare box for my 205 sorting i'll have a go!
Hi Jame ,its great to see a successful end result to a very involved job !
And proves you have the b....s to tackle any job big or small so Big pat on your back 👏 👍🙂
When I replaced the gearbox oil on my 500 Abarth I lifted the back level with the front and put a spirit level on the roof so it was at the correct level and the whole 2 litres went in fine also I used a length of garden hose shoved it in the filler hole with a funnel attached to the top to refill the gearbox. 👍🙂
Your video has been very valuable to me.i have done this to my own fabia but I was not brave enough to rebuild the gearbox.gearbox specialist told me it has to be filled with 3 litres and I found this to be completely filling it .
Doing this before it was fitted.i changed my main seal and clutch.theres a hose pipe clip at the back of the engine which gets in the way of removal and fitting
Awesome that is a huge task taking a gearbox apart granted the gearbox is a fairly simple one but even so still a lot to break and go wrong i certainly would not attempt one roll on the next project great channel.
Great job. For example, vw passat b6 with gearbox (code 02s) mounted on the engine must filled through reverse gear switch hole. "Fill plug" hole is not meant to be used for refilling while the gearbox is on the engine. That is according to official vw service manual. I suggest you to search for manual with description of correct refill procedure and you'll know why those 200ml left.
Just for reference, the bolts needed for the ball joint to wishbone (without the need to buy new ball joint) is part number N 101 277 07 S1, the kit includes 3 bolts and a small spreader plate with 3 captive nuts.
Excellent James, you can jack both front wheels up and run the car through the gears ⚙ 👍
Standing there with shorts on freezing 🥶. Also move the gears around so the fluid can get into all the gearbox.
Congratulations on doing your own gearbox James I had every confidence that you would do it
Excellent James ! True inspiration mate . You should be so proud
Pat on the back deserved well done mate and so happy to see the channel back in action properly
Good job well done from my experience filling up a gearbox make sure the plastic tube you use is smaller diameter then the gearbox filling hole so the air can get in otherwise the oil will come out
Well done James, great content and a super result .
Give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it👍👍👍
Well done James, I've been doing cars for over 50 years and wouldn't have tackled the gearbox job. Hat off to you mate. Keep up the good work.
Seeing you take on jobs from your shed helped me get the confidence to do my own work, it's been useful to pick up how to do certain things along the way!
The 5th gear is quite separated from the gearbox when you fill it so normally I fill it with 2 liter before I assemble it into the car.
Would that be to avoid moving resistance through the extra oil?
Great result James and another new experience successfully notched up !!!
Well done James you are on form mate
Great job, well done. Nothing as satisfying as fixing something yourself.
Well done James!
Well done, doesn't matter how long it takes, you repaired it,good job.
So satisfying to hear the difference - sounds sweet now!
Well done mate a first class job you have done just think how much money you have saved doing this job your self and it shows everybody how much work is involved to change a clutch that is a comes thing the gearbox was extra work just briliant content well done you
Phil in stoke
Bloody brilliant... great project James and fantastic to watch it turn out well 👍
I was looking forward to more Škoda content, really enjoyed this video!!.
Do you like the tanks too? Or just the cars?
@@aterack833 I like all things Škoda.
Good work, tackling a gearbox rebuild for the first time, well done, pleased it worked 👍
Brilliant work on the gearbox, your videos are very well edited and they always make great viewing. Thanks!
There are so many broken gearboxes lying about people have run away from LOL - but you took it on, great rebuild.
Fantastic job James, and excellent step by step commentary... your videos get better and better
Well done James, you had the confidence in your own ability.
Again well done and keep making these great videos 👏👏👏👏👏
That's the exact same as the Lidl pump, think it's just a generic Chinese design, unfortunately I bought 3 and they all failed but did get my money back
I just use a 100 ml syringe and some hose. Rather cheap and never failed so far :D
Well-done son. Good project.
Kept refreshing your channel waiting for this! Great as always, fella💪🏼 glad to see you’re getting into the swing of things again video wise
Fantastic job man, big respect trying and completing this job from start to finish on your own and on your driveway 👏👍
Top job James, I’m really loving the Skoda vids. Keep up the great work 👍
Hi James you have done a fab job

Absolute banging job mate, been looking foward to this video upload 🔥
Yep definitely a pat on the back mate!

Well done James 👏 cracking job mate well done for taking it on and taking us along with you 👍 👏 stay safe mate 👍 🍺
Well done you. Great video and congratulations getting it all finished.
Yes you,v done really well good job , 👍👍🤩Tony from bedfordshire
Great job brilliant footage to watch.
Very well done, brilliant work 👏 👍
Brilliant work, many very experienced mechanics would never consider doing this job, much respect. Love this channel 👍
Superb job, you should be very proud!
Good work, very admirable how you have the I can do it outlook and do just that . 👍🏼
Absolutely brilliant. I couldn't have done it. I wish I could. Thanks for the video.
Well done Inpress with your skills wish I had them nice job really enjoy the videos
Great video - thanks. You are firing on all cylinders.
James what a job! I said it when you started, you’re brave to have even attempted this job. Hats off to you sir. Great content as always and here’s to more and more content going forward. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏴
Hey James, check the 6 spline bolts on the driveshaft are tight after a short drive. I’ve done clutches on a mk4 golf and seat Leon (exact same bolts) and they both loosened after a drive even after being torqued to spec.
Congrats on a job well done , especially when it was a learning process as well . Your confidence will be sky high to tackle any job now
Great job. You've inspired me to crack on with my mk5 zetec s imp blue restoration. Luckily mine doesn't have much rust. Thanks James keep up the great content.
being someone with a vw, James make sure to check them cv axle bolts after a few days. They have a tendency to come loose if you don't use new stretch bolts. I just over torqued my bolts to stop them coming loose.
Smashed it mate! Well done, this has been a great little project.
Well done james you shud be proud mate taking on a job you have never done before. Looking forward to the next video 👍👍
Wow! Well done mate, knew you could do it but seeing it actually running with problem fixed is amazing. I really don’t know how you can make something as complicated as rebuilding a gearbox look easy but you do!
Good result, well done James.
I changed mine 0A4 gearbox , wich is a different version of this gearbox , I used Fuchs FE 75W oil . On my mk7 the gb is tilted towards the bonnet , so the correct procedure to fill it up is by using the reverse-gear switch hole (10mm hole) and fill it up with 1.7L for my gearbox (1.9L dry) . The bottom pins should fill with aprox 0.2L of oil , so you should correct the gearbox oil level after 5km (actually the correct procedure is jacking up the car and put it in gear for 5min, if i call correctly, but its the same thing)
Well done bud! Nothing feels better than doing a big repair and it all works out!
As an Ex Mechanic this is a job would never have tackled. Well done!
Well done James for having the confidence to do the jobs you do on your cars. I know what stripping a gearbox can involve. I’ve stripped and rebuilt a few classic mini gearboxes. Engine and gearbox out job. Must of saved a fortune especially if I had to of taken to a garage.
Best way to learn and save money is by doing it yourself. 👍👍
Great result, he who dares wins 👍👍👍
Well done James. The wait was well worth it
Well done James great content 👌🏻
Absolutely incredible work James, massive respect to you for doing that yourself, I can do most jobs on my cars, but a gearbox overhaul is one job that just terrifies me. You are ‘The Best’ DIY mechanic on CZcams in my opinion, looking forward for you to have a road test 👍🏻.
Watching your channel has been very useful as it's told me to fixed my zafira A with a broken egr. I'm a novice my self and yeah i Got It to pass the mot and saved It from the scrap. It gives you confidence to fix bigger things on a car. Thanks. 👍
Well done James! Superb rebuild!
very well done James you did such a good job with the gearbox
Loved this series, brave man. Well done.
