My grandfather and grandmother were homeless in LA in the 50s with 5 kids. They lived in a park that had a creek or stream running through it. My grandfather was on foot every day going to his part time job as a maintenance man, he was able to provide for his family minimum necessities and saved the majority of his earnings to get bus tickets for his family to go back to Kansas. Then he was able to be a farm hand and then became a taxi driver in Wichita then went to be a ship mate on a tug boat on the Mississippi. He eventually was able to reside permanently in Kansas. He raised 10 children. All of which have served in the military and or Graduated from University.

I am a second generation native Californian. I left 2 years ago. Between the crime, drugs and cost of living it became undoubtedly. I was homeless for many years, I didn't live in tent city's. I actually went camping in the woods in summer, desert in the winter.
I moved to Georgia, lower cost of living. A lot less crime, in my area. Jobs plentiful, haven't been homeless since.
California has slowly become a shithole.

Yep. It's been like that for such a long time. People just want to talk about the weather but don't realize that LA provides a numerous amount and wide range of services for the homeless. Much more than other cities outside of California. I worked for the DHHS during and after the recession and we ran into so many problems. The best answer we have is more services but the surveys we did showed that homelessness increased the next year after more services were provided. It was hard to keep track of the homeless population because a lot of those folks have no proper identification. I'd say about 2/3 of the 1000 or so that I personally interviewed were originally from other states. A LOT from the Midwest and Texas. Determined that it was because they don't provide any services aside from Salvation Army and church organizations.

Ri true. But the thing is we are devaluing homeless people.... even saying “homeless people” just doesn’t sit right with me for some reason. It feels as If you separate them from “regular people”; there are cases that if you provide a person who doesn’t have a home with one, a good job, and mental health services they will do better and help boost the economy because you don’t have to keep launching homeless services and shelters that cost more money than it does to just house someone in a nice home.... I don’t get why these governments are so greedy.

I was homeless for a few years until about 2 years ago (in Australia). One thing preventing a solution to the homeless "problem" anywhere in the world is the fact that there are quite a lot of people who actually enjoy the life living on the streets believe it or not. The bad days and nights are REALLY BAD! But there is also a level of freedom that you can't experience with any other lifestyle.

I was homeless for 2 years in Atlanta, Georgia. I avoided everywhere where homeless people congregate. I learned to navigate to different coffee shops and libraries everyday. I pitched a tent at night on the property of a business that never knew I was there. The only thing I kept from my old life was my laptop, that's what kept me connected to the world. It took a lot of effort to stay clean and groomed, but for the most part people didn't know I was homeless. People would ask me if I was going on vacation (backpack and luggage in tow). I'd just say yes. There are a lot of homeless people who are not crazy or drug addicted, but you won't see them. The ones you see have all lost hope of ever getting off the street. When you lose hope, despair comes next and it's all downhill from there.

Literally every single person I thought cared about me and whom I cared for turned out to be a fake.
I came through the experience and I’m glad it happened to me, because it gave me the opportunity to see what is really important in day to day life.
I learned how to tell the difference between who is important to me and who isn’t. It’s an important lesson, but one which everyone could do without.

@@TrailerTrashThorne I'm so sorry you have this ailment. I knew a man who had ALS. He was a coworker's husband. Once, I watched him walk through a fire pit! Right over the coals!
All I can say is each one of us has our own individual struggles to overcome. Sometimes they are just too much. I understand when this happens. I guess it's just a part of everyone's life, Federix Ataxia or not. Don't know why.
But I can say this, your attitude will make you the kind of person that people want to be around, if that's what you like, or you can withdraw. There's nothing wrong with that either. I've done it many times.
I've looked at the end of my life a few times and the one thing I took away from it was maybe it's better to engage other people, even if they're jerks, to get the positive feedback from the one's who aren't, when you find them.
You wouldn't believe the things I've seen people do when no one's watching. I used to work in the medical care industry and there were plenty of times I saw the very worst in people, and other times I saw the best in people.
And you would never be able to predict which ones would be which.

Grew up in Southern California in the late ‘90’s. Soon after graduating high school, even back then, I quickly realized that for a single young adult to try to make it there was next to impossible. I moved to Idaho where I went to college, and met my wife, and never went back to CA. My family all still lives in CA. I go back and visit once or twice a year. The second I drive back across the border into Idaho, I literally get out of the car, kiss the ground, and say a prayer of thanks for where I live. My home State gets worse and worse, every time I go back. It makes me so sad and depressed. I can’t stand to visit for more than about a week before I am homesick and want to go back to Idaho.

I was homeless for 30 days in April of 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Hence my name) Even vlogged about it a bit.
I had setup in my 2005 Suburban, and slept in the parking lots of Wallmart, Krogers, and the gym I used to keep clean/bathed.
I was 20 at the time, and moved down here to escape an abusive household when I was 19.
    Nobody knew I was homeless.
I got into a rental when I was done, and one year later I didn't have enough money for food. So I went days at a time without eating. I was 21.

And when they are not able to earn money for some reason. They don't go back home. People shame you if you are grown up and live with your parents who already have home. So just living and being able to drive left me with $350 a month for everything else (keep in mind I had no health insurance). Do you see a problem with this? When I was 15 I was riding through downtown LA passing by skid row to head back home with a couple of homies on our BMX bikes and there were two dude tweaking out on skid row and other homeless were like looking at them and of course my friend decides to go down that block, so we are passing by them two guys and no lie they start chasing us screaming and throwing stuff as we pass and just start chasing us for like 2 block. Idk what happen but that was crazy and My adrenaline was through the roof 😂

The rent is getting to a point where regular people can't afford it anymore. We never had this problem 20 or 30 years ago where us regular people could afford the rent. I live in Massachusetts and the rents here are getting just as bad. Really sucks.

It's capitalism's philosophy of taking as much as the market can bare from everyone and screw everyone else. Realestate investors are taking everything and jacking up rent and properties to the point nobody can afford to live there.

That is craziness. I’m comfortable now with my 45k so if I made 100k I would be in a 4 bedroom home with plenty of land. This is why I will never leave the philly, south jersey, Delaware area. It is expensive in some places but if you work hard you can live comfortably

100k in san Francisco isn't a lot i wouldn't think. I live in the midwest where i didn't even pay quite a 100k for my house and i make 60-65k a year. They just talked about a 1000 sq ft home costing over a mill there. My house is almost 3x that. Absolutely ridiculous

I am a British woman & I went travelling to America visited San fran L.A and vegas (saw some places in between too) me my baby brother older sister mom dad and grandad all went. Me and my Sister wanted to go for a walk when we got to San Fran because we were hungry and it was like near enough the middle of the night and I have genuinely never been so scared in my entire life just walking down the street. There was so much shit going on like actual fights and arguments one side of the road and homeless people screaming high as fuck on the other side. We ran into some shopping mall got food and basically ran home.
My sister and I decided we should take a short cut down some road that looked empty enough there were a few tents but that was it. As we went to walk down there some lovely guy ran up to us and shouting “woah woah where you going” my sister thinking he was trying it on with us told him to get lost but he quickly realised we were tourists and said “no seriously you do not wanna go down there girls not on your own what hotel are you staying at?” To which i said a hotel over the r road from our actual one just to be safe and he booked us an Uber to go back to our hotel after he could see we were so shook up.
Fuck Sanfran. Then again L.A was nearly just as bad if not as bad and S.F. We just knew not to walk around on our own at night there.
