ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಸ್ಥಳ ಪುರಾಣದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ದ್ವಾಪರಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಂಡವರು ವನವಾಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರಂತೆ. ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಭೀಮ ಕಾಶಿಯಿಂದ ತಂದ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲು ಅನುಜ ಧರ್ಮರಾಯನಿಗೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನಂತೆ. ಧರ್ಮರಾಯನಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಲಿಂಗದ ಅಭಿಷೇಕಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ನೀರಿಗಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಜುನ ತನ್ನ ಬಾಣವನ್ನು ಹೂಡುತ್ತಾನಂತೆ. ಆಗ ಆತನ ಬಾಣದಿಂದ ಚಿಮ್ಮಿದ ನೀರಝರಿಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸರಳ ಹೊಳೆ. ಅಂದು ಅವರು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿದ ದೇಗುಲವೇ ಭೀಮೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ
