      My Ancestor, Stephen Hopkins, came to Jamestown on a supply ship in 1609. The ship wrecked on Bermuda and had to be rebuilt. Then to Jamestown where he stayed from 1610 -1614. Went back to England because his wife had died and he had 3 children to care for. In 1620 took his family plus his new wife on the Mayflower to the New World.

    My 6th great grandfather 😢Richard Tidwell came to Jamestown sometime around 1650 with two brothers. They settled in Cople VA and he passed away in 1692 as a fairly successful tobacco farmer.
    I always wonder if he knew any of the people that are tied to the artifacts found at Jamestown.

      My 7th great grandfather, Robert Easley, came from England in 1675 and I often wonder the same thing you do. Captain William Byrd gave him a patent of 100 acres in the area where Richmond later developed in the spot which is now Shockoe Bottom. Later, he, Thomas Jefferson (the President’s grandfather who had arrived in Jamestown at the same time) and two other men were given more land by Capt. Byrd up the James River a bit around Fine Creek. The Jeffersons did their thing and my relatives kept migrating south and west through the 1800s - some stayed in SC where the town of Easley is named after Gen. Easley in the Civil war. Other brothers settled in TN and then Louisiana where I was born. 35 years ago I moved to Alexandria, VA and only found out about these ancestors and this Jamestown connection two years ago. I love everything about Richmond and visit there often. I feel as if I have circled back.

      @@KaySellsVA Kay that’s awesome to learn. I’ve been watching the “Jamestown Discovery Channel”. It’s fascinating.
      I was an airline pilot until a few years ago. My crew members though “this captains weird”. While they were partying on overnights or laying on the beach on long layovers… I was visiting cemeteries and museums. I love Richmond and the Virginia area. My son went to Fork Union Military academy (started in then 1800’s) not far from Richmond. We spend a lot of time in that area.

      So nice to meet you here! I’ve only been getting into genealogy in the last few years and it freaks me out when I think of all the times and places I’ve been drawn to in the Richmond area only to find out I have ancestors from here. Never had a clue or even a thought about it. In the late 1970s I lived in Richmond for 3 yrs. and the whole time I would be fascinated with the history and would spend so much time just driving around and looking. I didn’t know why but I always ended up on the west end of Richmond - now I know it was around that area where my original Easley ancestor settled! Knowing what I know now I go to Richmond often. May retire there. I’ve just discovered these Jamestown video channels and I also watch “Piedmont Trails” which is very good. As you found out when you were a pilot, once you get involved with this, it can almost take over your life!

    Recent studies have strongly indicated that the Roanoke colony was not destroyed by but assimilated into the native culture, in order to survive.
    There are people living in North Carolina who are genetic descendants of some of the Roanoke colonists. One group even retained the family name, Brown.
    They are related to the descendants of family members who stayed in England. Proof that some of the Roanoke colonists did survive, but gave up being English in order to survive.

He made it through the tough times and ended up a land owner who passed his property down to his son Jeremiah Ellis who ended up owning a big portion of land and the Under Sheriff there. I'm almost certain he was a tobacco farmer. They were buried in the Jones/Ellis cemetery in Surrey county.

    Fantastic video about Jamestown and the original settlers. Many in my family live just across the river from there. Things were a lot different when I was young we could use that area freely to swim and picnic. Williamsburg streets were open to traffic. I don't remember any fee to get into the areas. I believe there was a fee to go in the courthouse, perhaps which we didn't do because we were poor then. I miss that time. It was a lot simpler and more fun. C'est la vie.

    Indeed an outstanding video about the Jamestown colony !! My question is to Dr. Kelso, do you employ the use of metal detectors to find the metal objects that are beneath the surface at Jamestown ? I realize that there has always been friction between archaeologist's and metal detector users but I do feel that one compliments the other ! Please keep up your great work at Jamestown !

    • @Cinebar1997
      @Cinebar1997  Před 7 lety +12

      Having shot there for 15 years, I can tell you that to my knowledge, metal detectors have never been used. Objects are found by painstakingly removing the soil bit by bit. Many things are found at different layers that are not metal, and sometimes more valuable in knowledge than metal objects. The outline of the fort which proved it had not all been covered by the James River, was discovered by post holes. Post holes are where the soil is stained by the decaying of the wood. Truly one of the most valuable discoveries at Jamestown.

    • @Cinebar1997
      @Cinebar1997  Před 5 lety +3

      The skeleton known as JR (for Jamestowne Rediscovery) did not have a broken leg. He had a musket ball in his leg, which would have caused him to bleed out quickly. He, like most remains at Jamestowne, has not been identified. But there is evidence that he may not be quite as old as thought, therefore indicating that he may not be one of the 1607 first arrivals.
      Cinebar has been working with the First Colony Foundation as they seek to find the original remains of Roanoke. Test sites have been explored on Roanoke Island and along the waterways of Eastern North Carolina. Artifacts of the time period have been found in the general area, some close to Indian settlements. While not proven, it does indicate, that the Colony make have broken up and scattered among the Indian settlements.

      @@Religious_man Which one? Starting with the Norse settlement, there were a slew afterwards. The Norse settlement on Newfoundland proper dates back nearly 1,000 years. This is by science, which archaeology on it's own, is most certainly NOT. A chemist can irrefutably date the carbon-14 to 1,000A.D. Archaeologists ruin lives and refuse to admit they were wrong on dates, like the infamous "Clovis First" mentality on North America. Clovis first is DESTROYED beyond reproach. It took a LONG time to get the Norse date (1,000 A.D.) accepted because the scientists, I mean 'archaeologists', said it was impossible because there were no records and the building didn't match the styles. The point is Carbon-14 isn't infallible. Not by a long stretch, when handled and performed improperly. But you can nearly ALWAYS trust lab results over archaeologists insistence that something is 'impossible' because those clowns have nearly been proved wrong more times than they've been correct. It would be TOTALLY ok though, live and learn as you go, right, except, archaeologists will RUIN careers, badmouth, refuse to work for or with someone and destroy their lives because of an inconvenient finding or result and insist lab equiptment that functions of a level well over 99.99% and even above a 5-Sigma incidence....BY FAR.......that the lab equiptment must be "having a bad day." And when it's proven beyond reproach they NEVER admit fault, as an individual or a group. That's the worst part. Failure to acknowledge they were wrong. Which is dearly needed after the venom they spit when someone dares defy what they have spent their lives learning, only to realize some or most was wrong. It must be a gut-punch. But they are the most egotistical mean-ass babies out there, and it's not like their contribution to society, while helpful, and absolutely necessary for intellectuals, it's ain't like they cured cancer and have a right to act as they do. Even cancer-curers wouldn't have that right.

      Sorry dark person, that's way too long. All this talk about the dating of colonialism of Newfie Land is not including account for the tribes that were living there first.

    why not try to get a dna sample from him. That way they could trace his heritage and maybe find distant relatives

    I'm surprised to see the young lady at 34:38 have her feet in the coffin near his head, would that be ok to do with a centuries old unearthed skeleton?

    • @Cinebar1997
      @Cinebar1997  Před 5 lety +2

      First of all, there is no coffin. The reason they know it was a coffin burial is because of the soil stains forming the outline of the coffin. But, the coffin itself is long gone. The young lady, Jamie May is a seasoned archaeologist who was one of two who did the painstaking and tedious work of uncovering the skeleton. She was working with Dr. Doug Owsley, the world's leading forensic anthropologist, on the analysis of the skeleton. Examination of skeletons and artifacts in situ, requires close up work. It might surprise you that this cameraperson was also close up in the burial shooting, as well as many more burials on Jamestowne Island.

    The original name was “Yamestown” . Why did the name change? The letter “J “ is s fairly new letter, only about 400-500 years old. Do a google search of Jamestown photos and you will see an old piece of what looks like metal with Yamestown pressed into it.

    • @Cinebar1997

      It was named in honor of King James, not King Yames.

      @@Cinebar1997 Maybe you misunderstood what I was saying... Do a search on the letter "J". It is fairly new letter, only about 400-500 years old. So the original name couldn't possibly have been Jamestown since the letter "J" was not in existence. Check out this Yamestown artifact. www.space.com/3410-nasa-launch-jamestown-artifact-coins-aboard-shuttle.html
