Subzero Railfanning on the BNSF Chillicothe sub near Wenona, IL 02/07/21

After a usual January temperature wise, February has definitely been far colder. With air temperatures 8 below zero, I didn't go very far so I went to Wenona on the BNSF Chillicothe sub all layered up and the heat in my car running. Traffic was a bit slow with a long 2.5 hour lull before things got busy. Many of the train horns were a bit flat sounding due to the cold. Of note UP Z-G4CI had two CSX engines trailing and a westbound BNSF stack train had a SD70ACe leader. Definitely the coldest weather i have been out in. These temps have made all of the horns sound funky. One of the WSOR locals that passed through my area, its leader had an RS3L that sounded like a 2M.

I don’t know about you, but I think waiting 3.5 hours on the Emporia Sub in 95-100° degree heat and getting nothing is worse than this. Hopefully if I go up there in May I don’t get a dry spell of lingering cold temps. Nice catches nevertheless!
