  • Chapter 6 recapping my unexpected Autism and ADHD year: this week I focus on 25 Autistic Strengths - some of the common themes and positives that tend to emerge for people on the autism spectrum.
None of us are going to have ALL of these strengths, but a lot of us are going to have a LOT of them. So do pick out the ones you've got, write them down, repeat, repeat, repeat to yourselves and others, and use them if useful to help start building your neurodivergent battle armour to be kinder to yourself. Use your strengths and differences to start negotiating this crazy neurotypical world better. Things are not going well out there - the world needs more neurodivergent brains to help fix things!!
Please do like or subscribe if these videos are helpful. If I get to 100 subscribers I can start posting links to other useful sites and signposting info directly into the videos themselves.
I'm going to keep posting the link to the AQ Self Test for autism every Sunday in case this is the first video people come across: psychology-too...
Below are some additional websites I enjoyed, running through some additional common strengths of being on the autism spectrum:

Being autistic (late identified, age 52), I can often struggle to think of strenghts that my autism has brought me. However, listening to your very well assembled list of common autistic strengths, I was able to relate to most of them. Certainly helped me feel better about myself, as it's all too easy to become preoccupied with the things you struggle with I find ....

I really like the way you present your thoughts in these videos. Nice job! I was "diagnosed" (identified!) as autistic last year at the age of 65. As I researched what that might mean, I was lucky to stumble across a list of bullet points of autistic strengths very similar to this, and I realized I had used every one of them in my work as a paralegal and then a lawyer. And when I learned that a huge percentage of autistic people are un-or underemployed, I wrote a book called My So-Called Disorder: Autism, Exploding Trucks, and the Big Daddy of Rock and Roll. My little way to set the world straight about what it means (for one of us, at least) to be autistic. Anyway, keep it up--these videos are great.

Thanks! What an awesome title for a book. Just found it on Amazon and purchased on Kindle - looking forward to reading it. I've often thought the law and legal work is something I would have liked to have have done in a parallel life. Kind of ideally suited to tendencies for a) things being in a logical order and b) justice and fairness!

Great list. It's good to take in the positives. I also disagree with the medical model for the most part.

I just found your channel. Your videos have such an indepth and systematic approach, which I find so helpful. I will be pursuing a formal diagnosis soon. I also have cptsd and probably adhd. It's amazing how many things in my work life that would be considered justified workplace accommodations for autism happened organically from extreme need and self agency. If I had to pay for special desk lamps and such myself, I did so. Some things that I think autistic people strongly need, such as lack of fluorescent lights, directed desk lamps, proper types of keyboards for production typing, etc., are actually better ergonomically for everyone who does that type of work. I used noise canceling earphones and brown noise loops in my ears to be less distractible. I also remember more kind and sensitive people I worked with sensed my extreme social phobias and they just tried to shelter me, for which I am very grateful. There are certain traits true of me such as very deep empathy, especially for other outcasted people, young children and animals, that seem to often be completely missed or ignored by most people. I'm proud of that, and can see how important it is for the human species to have such deeply sensitive people as a part of it. I didn't know my right from left until age 12, but scored on the genius level on a school's screening test at age 20. I identify with the issue of demand avoidance and rejection sensitivity very highly. In the quiet where I feel safe, I can see big strengths in me. But there are losses I have yet to grieve, too. Thanks for sharing your story and helpful points. I just watched the video about revealing one's discovery of being autistic with friends and family. I'm going to wait until I get an official diagnosis before I tell more siblings. I'm 63, and this had been both wonderful and sad to find out. I will definitely take your advice! I had to say "yes!" outloud when you mentioned that you go sometimes from being completely withdrawn into introspection and almost silence, to being the opposite and heading straight into oversharing. That has always been true of me and has seemed to surprise lots of people.

Hi, welcome! Sounds like you have great self-awareness and agency in terms of making the adjustments you've needed for yourself to thrive. The 'spiky profile' a lot of us have mean we excel in some areas and have challenges in others (i.e. the 'left and right' issues you raise and just not 'getting' certain things others can seem to find find basic). I've not been great at getting accommodations (or even recognising when I need them) over the years myself, and have just tried to contort myself into whichever box or situation I've found myself. For years, my wife got frustrated with me and would tell me: "adjust your environment!" when I got frustrated with things and I was never 100% sure what she meant by that. I think I'm getting it now but it's weird (and incredibly frustrating) how sometimes the connections just don't spark.

Hi, this is a lovely video. I am wondering if I am an autistic person who ran out of steam. I ran into a wall and have been in a frozen state for months. I recognize all these things you're talking about, and it's moving that you list all the good things because I feel like a total worthless cripple at the moment, but the positives you mention are all true for me, except for the memory one 😁. I've had therapy for years now, for anxiety, but it hasn't been able help me get "back on track". I have learned self-acceptance etc anxiety management but can't get out of my freeze srate and am still exhausted and can't get back to the way I was (a high achiever beating myself up to get things done.)
Unable to accept it I've frantically looked into what is wrong with me and did an AQ test, score was "highly likely", and now I'm thinking this may be a severe autistic burn out. I mean, it all fits.
Thank you for these calm, talking videos without the loud youtube whistle and bells.

Thank you for taking the time to share. It does all sound quite familiar, from the high achiever beating yourself up to get things done (look into ADHD and 2e profiles if you you haven't already) to the exhaustion and burnout and anxiety therapy not quite hitting the mark. Good luck with your self detective work and remember to be kind to yourself!

She encorages us all to be diagnosed if we can to get the figures noticed and that truer figures will help for research and care. I am Paraphrasing here and probably badly but worth watching.
