The best end to choose on the yarn ball is the opposite of whatever one you actually used. Every single time.
Okay YES, thank you for confirming my suspicions 😂
“Allegedly this is a hobby that I like” 😂 The only correct way to feel about adding the finishing touches on garments. Love your podcast!
😂 You get me!
Oh I’m so glad I found your channel Ali! My Dad also watches all of my videos. I was floored when he asked me one day if I had swatched for my new sweater. And he reads all of my comments and responds to anyone who mentions him. It’s so sweet.
I’m an outside pull gal. But I still get yarn barf at the end. You’re right there is no good way.
Looking forward to more episodes!!
PS… Hi, Ali’s Dad!!!
There is no love like a Dad who watches your knitting content 😂❤️
The yarn pull conundrum… I go with the flow. If I can easily pull center, I will. If I pull from outside, I will go till things
get messy and will find end and hand roll or start with fussy yarn in a plastic sandwich baggy. First I cut a little hole in corner, feed end through and seal top.
Oooh that's clever!
Use 2 - 16 inch circular needles for your sleeves. I also use 2 - 16 inch circulars for knitting socks.
Interesting, what do you like better about using two circulars compared to 2-up on one magic loop? 🤔
It takes less time because you’re not having to fiddle with the cord, pulling it through and around and for me using two circulars, makes it faster and more enjoyable
@@cindygabel4356I totally agree that for small circumference projects, like sleeves, socks, mittens, 2 circulars are fast and easier, way more efficient ( especially colourwork). I was a hardcore Magic Loop knitter, till I embarked on knitting 60 pairs of colourwork mittens last year for a craft sale. 2 circulars all the way!
I love that your nephew is your CZcams guru, adorable. Your cardigan looks fantastic. And your family's response is so sweet! Good luck with your first five pages. Just to get seen is such a feat, and having a fan base is also going to help you. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Thank you so much! 😄 I'm taking a break from revisiting those five pages yet again as we speak 😂
@@AliMakesEverything good luck!!!
I make dog walking fingerless mitts that have long ribbed cuffs that fold back when I need fingers and I fold down when I need warm fingers. The ribs part extend a couple of inches over my finger tips when I have them folded out to cover my fingers, then I fold them down when they I don’t need super warm gloves. I even do the same with the cuff on the thumb. I’ve made them for friends I walk with.
Also, I knit my socks two at a time but in two separate needles. I divide my yarn ball in half so I don’t have to juggle tangling yarns. I knit a cuff and then another cuff. A leg and then a leg. Etc. when I’m done, I’m done with the pair. And I’ve knit so so many pair of socks that they are now my grab and go no need to focus project. Everyone in my family wants hand knit socks. Yay! Happy knitting!
Ooh I love this idea! Thanks so much for watching! 😄
Ok second comment - my preferred genre is also YA and my neice (13 yo) loves graphic novels so I will def be checking out Lights for Christmas gifts! Thank you for sharing!❤
What a trip to the eighties your gram's yarn was. Looking forward to seeing you knitting whit it in 2024.
Hahahaha right?! Thanks so much for watching 😄
Your manager is right and the fish lips heels fit, are easy and are the ONLY heels I make now
Okay this is the encouragement I need because the pattern doc is daunting 😂
This is a way to keep your balls from getting tangled when you are pulling from the outside. I put a roll of paper or cardboard over the Ballwinder cone, wind the yarn as usual. I took a small box and a plastic needle I was not using, poked the needle through one side of the box then through the yarns paper core, then through the other side of the box. Pull your yarn from the top of the box. This allows the yarn to spin freely, which means your yarn does not un twist, and flows smoothly. I have the same problems pulling from the center, and also it sometimes untwists the yarn a little bit, allowing it to split. If you don’t want the box to be an eyesore, you can spray paint the box and put grommets in it.
😂
Ooh, this is creative, I like it!
I’m a 100% with you. I am a monogamous knitter. I only buy yarn and a pattern when I’m in the home stretch of a current project. Exceptions for buying a skein to swatch for my next project to see if it will work. And I have the occasional small project for portability.
I generally pull from the center, but Maggie Righetti wrote in “Knitting in Plain English” to slide your thumb and index finger along the yarn. One direction is smoother because of the plaques on the wool. You should knit with the smoother direction. Sometimes that’s from the outside.
INTERESTING! My god, just when I think the minutiae of knitting couldn’t get any more specific and niche, there’s always more and here we are feeling for the direction of plaques on wool 😂 I will never run out of new things to learn!
for the rolling around issue you could try putting each ball in their own plastic baggie(gallon size) and set them in a large bag or basket on the floor while working. This is the budget method I like!!
Ooh clever!
I use plastic bags for my knitting projects, too. I don't own a ball winder so I always go for the outside every time.
So glad you appeared on my feed today. I enjoyed your podcast. Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thank you for watching! 😊
Good quality video and sound. Love it 🥰 😊
Hi! Just found you! Pulling….girl, pull for I’m the outside! Inside = yarn barf. I put my yarn in a basket or bowl and let it spaz around in there. Also, an unpopular opinion, I will wind my yarn and silk mohair together before knitting. I am a relatively tight knitter. Love your sweater and the color is everything.
Hahahaha I think I am becoming a pull-from-the-outside convert! Thank you! 😊
OK I have to pause an answer this question even though this episode is 3 months old because I DO have a system for winding up yarn balls and I DO think about this (and I do have an annoying little sister who thinks my yarn room is hilarious, and would absolutely do the same if I ever started a podcast): I always pull from the outside UNLESS I'm pulling from both ends of the ball. Reasons being:
1) It's easier to rewind a messy cake because you can start from the inside and I'm convinced that's the only time we should be center pulling
2) I have yarn gadgets set up all over the house: those spindles with magnets that spin and yarn bowls (because I finally had to wave the flag about my mug collection)
3) if your yarn is too slippery, center pull makes the worlds biggest tangle. If the yarn is too sticky, the center pull invites yarn barf. There is a godilocks point for center pulls and ain't no body have time for this
OK back to the episode.
Hahahahahha THANK YOU, there is method to the madness even if our sisters don’t understand 😂
The boucle yarns would make cute breezy tank tops- The Daphne one you showed in creme and the small ball of light blue from your grammy's stash. I cake all my mohair now because I"m still traumatized from the mess I made the first time I used it.
Why is mohair the worst when centre pull goes wrong 😭
Made good podcast (audio only, so Spotify) they own a yarn store in. New Hampshire and used to have a podcast. They did two episodes called yarn detectives. Excellent. Fun to listen to and will give you a path to figure out what is on that cone of gold yarn.
Oooh that sounds like a great resource! Thank you! 😄
You are a hoot!
I cant decide which thought to comment on because i had so much fun watching your podcast but i didnt see any comments yet addressing the blue confetti-type yarn and i could be wrong but i think its meant to be held along with a thicker yarn to just add little tweedy speckles of color. Also I like how you don't do a lot of projects at once and how you don't accumulate a ton of yarn with no plan. I find that overwhelming. Will be fun to see what you come up with for all the gifted mystery yarn tho!
I’m going to be trying to use up that mystery yarn for the rest of my life 😂 Thank you so much for watching!
Look into trigger mitts for your dog walking mittens. They’re mittens but the thumb and pointer finger are individual. They might work well!
This is so smart! 😄
I truly enjoyed your podcast. Knitting and reading just go together. They are two things that can be done on a cold, rainy/snowy day in front of the fireplace that make us feel snuggled in and relaxed.
Yeeeeeees, the vibe is immaculate!
Definitely ask your sister what "frogging" means, and why it's called "frogging". I've been knitting for years and just yesterday discovered the answers to these questions.
Absolutely, this one has to be top of the list 😂
No no non knitter sisters yet, please. We want knitting content and you're funny enough without having irrelevant input yet hahahahaha! And you're new to youtube so let us get to know your knits and you first.
Hahahah thank you!
Tell Chase, you got more one more subscriber!!! LOL Your sister should come on and you should teach her knitting on camera. I asked my husband to do that, and he emphatically said NO. Love your podcast, Rosie from Toronto.
😂 I love this idea, I'll have to see if I can convince her! Thanks so much for making Chace happy 😂
You popped up on my feed this morning, glad you did. Canadian here too, about an hour and a half west of Toronto. So, laughing because people are right, dang, we all talk fast! Yes, a knitter, and a bookworm as well so awesome. Also smiling, books are colour coded aren’t they? My daughter’s mother-in-law called the other day to say she wanted to drop of her mother-in-laws unused wool. I could go through it and pick whatever and give away the rest. So you know it’s vintage, cool. But, literally 3 rain barrels size drums 😂 and I already have a notable stash as I knit for myself, family, and markets. So I guess I too will be knitting until I die😂
Hahahahaha can I blame my fast talking on being Canadian?! I haven't heard that before, but that's perfect, I'll let my Mum know next time she complains about me talking too fast 😂 And yes, good eye, they sure are colour coded 😂 Thanks so much for watching! Have ~barrels~ of fun with your yarn 😂
Just found your channel and love it! You’re gonna love that Ginger Twist yarn(used to be my LYS when I lived in Edin) and since it has so much drape, it’d make a great scarf/cowl!
Ooh that’s awesome! Thanks for the suggestion! 😄
I never pull from center of the ball 🤷♀️. It’s ok if you don’t have finished object every time. lol you also don’t need to post every week, knitting is a slow hobby for sure!
Yeah I don’t think weekly is a realistic goal for this, my 8-year-old manager is going to be so disappointed 😂
a new Canadian knitting and bookish youtuber?? looking forward to more videos 😊
You sound like my people! 😄 Thanks so much for watching!
Definitely ask your sister what "frogging", "blocking", "Kitchener stitch" and "floats" are!😅 These are the ones that stumped me when I first started out and I'd love to hear how a non-knitter describes them
...Also, can we talk about how to buy the wool combos from different companies?! I recently spent THREE hours trying to find the best combination of merino and mohair that didn't break the bank (because simply buying the recommended amount from the recommended company in the pattern is almost never in my budget bracket). Eventually I gave up and bought 2 extra balls of merino and decided to forgo the mohair - when I start my project I'll check the gauge and hope for the best. 🙃Wish they used knitting patterns instead of triangles to explain math in high school...maybe then I would have had a better idea of how to work out the ratio/amount of balls I need to buy. 🤓
Hahahha great suggestions, thank you!
Oh my god, I know, yarn substitution math and logistics are 😵💫 I was so annoyed the first time I learned yarn weight categories aren’t even 100% consistent 😂
You are very entertaining to listen to while I sew or knit. I missed about half of what you said because you speak so fast, but it was fun! I love that your nephew/manager is 8 years old and is brilliantly discerning about his favourite knitting podcasts 😃
You can slow down the speed. Hit the gear and select play speed!
My mum would say the same thing, I’m afraid I don’t have a control dial for that feature 😂 Thanks so much for watching!
Live your energy and excitement.
Knitting should be fun.
Thanks so much for watching! 😄
First time viewer and new subscriber here. I hope this makes your new CZcams manager (AKA nephew) very happy.
I keep thinking about your grandma who can no longer knit. Have you (or she) ever considered a knitting machine? I don’t own one myself, but from the videos I’ve watched, they’re a fun and reasonably inexpensive way for people with dexterity issues to continue making things! (I believe the Sentro is approximately US $60.) Obviously, there’s going to be a learning curve, but if kids can learn to use them, I’m sure your grandma could too! Just a thought.
Hahaha he’ll be thrilled! Thanks so much for being here! She actually used to use a knitting machine along with her regular knitting 😄
Presidents Coice has a very nice Earl Grey tea. Not sure if you tried it but I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted it. I like the piece that will be your life's work. :)
Ooh I haven't tried that one yet! I am always here for an Earl Grey recommendation, thank you 😄
Okay so I too have been on a dog walking glove quest! I ended up making flip-top mittens, with a slit in the thumb so you can poke it out to open poop bags. Slit works great, so you could always do that instead of making your gloves finger tip less, for more warmth
Oooooh! The slit idea is very interesting, I like that as a sort of in-between option 🤔
You could do a bit of detective work on your yellow yarn. Looks like wool or mostly wool and it doesn’t look like other natural fibres like cotton or linen does it? Burn a little snippet. If it forms little beads it’s acrylic. If it forms ash and smells like singed hair, it’s wool or a wool blend. If it’s wool, try spit splicing it. If it doesn’t splice it’s superwash. Course there might be other animal fibres in there mightn’t there? I recently bought a cone of destash off ebay. No yarn composition label but the manufacturer was Quality Yarn, New Zealand. Research revealed it was a vintage merino/possum blend 😮
Possum?! 😂 Wild. Thank you so much for these tips though, this is the fibre wisdom I need! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What a joy it was to come across your channel in my feed! I am also an Ontarian. I hail from 2.5 hrs South-West of Toronto. Your content is so very relatable, as I too began knitting not long ago and am now stuck in deep and adore it.
Looking very forward to the next video!
Hello fellow Ontarian! We're both in deep 😂 Thanks so much for watching!
Ali I love your podcast and your style!!! So take that to your sister! 😂
I’m in love with your no frills cardi and I would never have chosen that color but I think that color is brilliant!!! I just bought the pattern and now I’m trying to decide what color to do it in - will you share your sizing? As in did you go with a snug fit or size up for layering over sweaters? I don’t think I would layer it over sweaters so I should probably go with a snug fit.
Keep posting!!! 😊❤
New to your channel and I have to say very enjoyable! Suggest you watch nimble needles on subject of where to pull your yarn from since there is a very big difference in how your yarn twists on itself. Center pull twists the yarn far more. I find this twisting annoying.
Great suggestion, thanks so much for watching! 😊
I really like knitting and books too. Your comment about your grandmother not being able to knit made me realize that I will be very sad when that happens. She deserves plenty of hugs.
I love the book content too
Right?! It's so sad to think about, especially when I feel like we associate knitters so closely with grandmothers! More incentive to knit her some more things to return the favour. Thanks so much for sticking around for the book content! 😊
I have been knitting for over 60 years, I’m 75. And a lot depends on the size of the cake or yardage of the yarn ball/cake. I am working at present with these huge cakes from Lion Brand and outside is necessary or I get yarn barf. It’s a lap blanket for a friend and yarn tangling can be a real bother!💜🧶
Amazing! Good to know there’s no perfect solution no matter how long you’ve been at it 😂
Im so glad CZcams recommened you today! I've thought the same thing about how we share what we knit. You're so fun. And I love your pace.
Aww thank you so much for being here! 😊
Yet to try it, but I’m planning to attempt the technique of ball winding the two yarns you hold together in the same cake- it’s supposedly all about keeping even tension. If you try it, let us know if it’s amazing or a disaster 😅
Be careful, I did that for my Magnolia Bloom and it was wonderful at first but awful as I got further into the cake 😂 Two strands of the same yarn should be fine but the way the merino would stretch but the mohair didn’t…it was a disaster 😂
Yarn pulling: center all the wayyy! I put up with yarn barf because seeing the ball shrink is so satisfying
Hahahaha it issssss!
Thank you for Continuing to make videos! I just found you and have enjoyed all your videos. Also thank you for talking books. My dog is similar in a dog walking style, as in needing training while we walk. I have been pondering that as well. I brought a pair of gloves out recently where I still have the thumb stitches on hold on one glove and it actually worked nice to slip my thumb in the glove when it was cold but out when I needed to zip my pockets etc. I’d be curious if you made a mitt with a little hidey hole for your pointer finger 🤷🏽♀️
I love this accidental discovery! Amazing 😄 Thanks so much for watching!
What a delightful chat! Thank you for sharing your joys! A thought for a future huge cardigan - knit it entirely in the round then steek it!
If you are really adventurous you could possibly do that with the remainder of the body of your current project.
In retrospect that might've been a much more logical approach to this kind of cardigan 😂
Oh wow, the CZcams algorithm really delivered today! This is my first episode of yours that I'm watching, but liked and subscribed almost immediately!
As for your dogwalking gloves, we went to Iceland last September and I needed something to keep my hands warm but also I needed bare fingers for constant photo opportunities. So I knit myself (and also a pair for my BH) a pair of fingerless mitts, but extended the finger part to about 5cm past my finger line (as well as the thumb part). My hand was warm, my fingers were warm, and when I needed some dexterity, I just pushed back the top part (or folded it down) and bingo, it made it easy enough to whip out my phone and photograph the amazing scenery. And when my hands got cold again, I just covered them up. My BH originally thought they were silly looking, and wanted nothing to do with them, but he soon saw what a smart woman he married and wore them the entire trip! Hope this helps you make a decision.
Oooh that’s very clever, I love this idea! Thanks so much for being here! 😄
Karoline (from the Karoline's Knits podcast) has knit the Petite Knit Penny Gloves specifically for walking her dog in Scotland. That might be an idea for your dog walking needs.
Ooh I could see that pattern being a good base to modify from! 😄
I'm a center pull but i'll also re-wind if it gets funky.
Hmm I think what I'm learning is I need to be more willing to get up from where I'm sitting knitting and go to my ball winder 😂
An episode with your sister would be fun. Love your content 🇨🇦
Thanks so much for being here! 😄
Just discovered your channel. You are so fun!!! Your family anecdotes are fabulous. Yes I'd love to see you ask your sister a "non - knitter" things about knitting!!! And your color coded book wall is so satisfying.
Thank you so much! 😄 I do love anything colour coded 😂
Hi Ali! This was such a great podcast and I look forward to watching your previous episodes! Your cardigan is already amazing and I can’t wait to see its progress, even if it does take forever, though I think two sleeves and a couple inches in the body in four weeks is great progress!
Thank you so much for watching! 😄
I loved seeing your grandma’s stash, especially the Eaton’s yarn. I think you should find a vintage pattern for it. Knitters are always struggling to find a good substitute yarn for vintage patterns. And the bobbly yarn is meant to be held with another strand of yarn.
Oooh that's a great idea! Do you have any idea of what the problems tend to be when people are looking for yarn to knit with on vintage patterns? I wouldn't have thought that the fibre needs would be much different but clearly this isn't something I know a lot about! 😄
Love finding new knitters, even more so when you're local and I can actually benefit from what enhancements you get that I can also get without the exorbitant shipping costs! A fun knitting terms is "tink". I'm usually an inside puller, but then when the cake gets too unstable, then i'll rewind it from the other end and end up being an "outside" knitter. Also, I've got the fish lips kiss heel just sitting in my "to be learnt" list too. I think it's the novel of instructions that has held me back, but hearing you talk about it has made me curious enough to want to pull it back out. It's a complicated life i live =) Anyways, thanks for another fun video! Happy knitting!
Oh no, I forgot the instructions looked like a novel 😂 We'll see if I manage to follow through on this promise once I take another look at it 😂
I’m watching your vlog for the first time. Knitting content is great, and I’m sure I will watch again, but I just have to comment on your books. I don’t even know how to say this, but something about your colour co-ordinated background just warms my heart. Maybe it’s a bit of ocd, but I love that
Thank you so much, it’s my favourite part of my home for sure 😄❤️
Just found you! Love it! The Grammie nubby cotton would make great washcloths. Your gold mitten should be displayed in your bookshelf! It’s a keeper.
Oooh that’s a great suggestion! Thank you!
Wool yarn doesn’t burn and is self extinguishing. Set a match to a little piece and see what happens
Great idea! Thank you! 😄
Love your no frills sweater. Great idea to knit sleeves as you go from top down! It is a dilemma whether to pull yarn from middle or wind yarn.
Thank you! 😄 I’m really loving how easy and accurate it is to try on as I go with the sleeves already done!
try a yarn cozy when you center pull .. it helps!
I think I'll have to try that! Thank you! 😄
Love your channel. Just found it. You’re very fun to watch!!! Love the books in the background. They’re arranged in such an esthetic way . Love to hear you have a manager helping you with your videos…..lol your nephew!!! LOVE LOVE the red lipstick and nails!!! I love to wear the same. Keep going with the videos please. And like your “ manager” advice about weekly vids.
Thank you so much! 😄 You sound like you have great style 😉
Maybe the lace weight blue confetti could be held double with something and used kind of like Rico Make it Tweed?
I paused on knitting them as I have to start over in a smaller size, but the Ysolda Roddin fingerless gloves have a cuff at the top that you can flip up to cover more of your hand when it’s colder. I’d have to report back on dog walking practicality, but I’m into that concept to make fingerless gloves a bit warmer. Enjoy your Sunday!
Oooh the confetti tweed idea is a fun one, I love that! 😄
I take non cake skeins and make them into cakes. I stuff them into quart ziplock bags and stick their tag in with it. It fall in on itself eventually but i find that it doesnt get knotted up in the bag. I then just rewind it if needed. I love winding balls of yarn....
I'm jealous, I wish I loved winding balls of yarn! 😂
I’m knitting this the Fausta bralette too! Mine is in a moss green. Your deep blue yarn is going to be beautiful for that garment. Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!
Ooooh yours sounds like it's going to be so beautiful! 😄
Center pull balls and use a Yarn Bra. The yarn bras work better after they are broken in a wee bit. But I have had good luck with them using difficult yarns.
Oh my god, this is the first time I've heard of a "Yarn Bra", hilarious 😂
Just came across your episode -the cardigan sucked me right in. Lol! I love that the button band is knit as you go and it so long- I think I would run out of steam, but I will cheer you on. My sister bought me a sweater kit from a fancy Vancouver knitting shop back in the 80’s and I knit her an avant gard sweater and never did knit up mine (I am more of a plain Jane sweater wearer and back then didn’t knit for myself). There was some of that ribbon yarn and some nubbly yarn similar to your grandmothers- even the colours are similar, so likely the same vintage-so funny. The pattern was intarsia so some sections were done in the ribbon and some in the nubs and some plain yarn. Kinda weird, but knit up better than I thought it would. Good luck with your book writing. My friends always say I should write a book. I sometimes post random life stores on my Facebook that they find funny, but a whole book would be beyond me. Enjoyed your episode. I have subscribed from way out west in the interior of BC.
Oh wow, I’m so curious trying to imagine what this sweater would have looked like 😂
Love all your yarny enhancements, just a fyi, the cones usually have the names and weight of the yarn printed on the inside of the cone, at the bottom. 😊
Agh, I just checked and this one doesn't, but that's a good tip for the future! Thank you! 😄 This particular cone just refuses to be identified 😂
As a Canadian living in NY I really enjoy your podcast, many things feel pleasantly familiar, like Eatons!
I'm on team `pull from the center' when possible(sometimes you can't find the center end). I like seeing the skein gradually collapse. I also find it is easier to knit on the go with the center pull if your yarn is in a knitting bag.
I enjoyed seeing the yarns from your grandmother.
The flat shiny blue yarn is a style of yarn called a Tape Yarn.
The aqua yarn that looks like a string with little confetti tufts, I can't remember what it is called but that type of yarn is usually knit together with other yarns to obtain a textured effect. It would be interesting to see what it looks like knit together with an end of silk mohair.
The nubby pink yarn looks like a slub yarn, but I can't confirm it was hard to see.
Looking forward to seeing what you will do next. Enjoy your knitting.
Oooh, thank you so much for the insights on the vintage yarn! I will have to do some digging into patterns for tape yarn and see what kind of project I think could use a little confetti 😄
This conversation has reminded me of a long abandoned scarf project where I knit this type of confetti yarn(mokuba sells it) in combination with a bulky weight Alpaca yarn. The effect was pretty but the knitting was a bit finicky. I also felt that the stitch was perhaps a bit beyond my ability so I abandoned it at the time. I just pulled it out and I think I'll either frog it and try again with a different stitch or maybe just work to complete it. If I can send you a picture I will. You've totally encouraged me to give it another try.
I used to make decorative scarves out of wool like the blue, thin boule…three inches by five or six feet in length. Also made a ribbon shirt, sort of like your ribbon yarn.
When it comes to dog walking gloves, have you looked at trigger mitts? Those with a tiny bit off for just the thumb and pointer finger might be ideal. I am planning on making a pair as part of make 9. Good luck with your new stash items.
Okay this is the first I've heard of trigger mitts but this is genius! This might be part of the solution! 😄
Oh! Look for a WWII rifleman gloves pattern!
Oooh this is brilliant!
I feel like you could make a little tiny purse out of the mitten your grams made,…. and just flip the cuff and and add a button? just a thought…. it’s pretty cute. When I was first on my own, the first account I ever had was with Eatons, and I bought all kinds of stuff from my house. I had no idea they had yarn!
Ooh cute idea! Apparently Eatons had everything 😂
Enjoyed your podcast ❤ Good luck with your book editing.
Thank you so much! 😄
Love your videos :) I knitted this cardigan few years ago but never finished. I was out of the yarn, and I used old colorway from KFO merino that they no longer had. And could not find similar color at that time. SO I had to frog almost all cardigan :( So I thinking to knit one again someday.
Noooooo! That's devastating! I need to be careful, this is totally something that would happen to me as I'm constantly running out of yarn and having to order more 😂
Love your podcast! I recently made gloves with a convertible mitten top! so the finger part of the gloves went all the way up to the nail bed, the tips of my fingers are free but I picked up stitches along the back of the hand to make a mitten top that can come off and on (and is very warm because it’s like a double layer when u have the mitten part on as well) as needed during walks if that makes sense.
Smart, I like this! Thanks so much for watching! 😄
I love your sweater
Thank you so much! 😄
I had knit socks in filcolana Peruvian wool for my teen but it had holes in it in just a week. It could either be my teen’s fault and his Hobbit feet…. Or the yarn. 😂
Oh no, really?! That’s dismal 😂 I know so far my Dad’s have survived a weeklong snowmobiling trip but it probably helps that most of the day, his feet aren’t actually walking anywhere, just riding 😂
Thanks for a great podcast - I really enjoy watching it :) Regarding the perfect dog walking gloves I was thinking of two patterns that I really enjoy and would like to highlight them, even though you said you considered designing them yourself . The first ones are the chilly podsters which are convertible gloves. That pattern is free on Ravelry. The second ones are the anticline (fingerless mits), as they have a long folded cuff over the fingers, so that you can elongate them when you need extra warmth - they are on tiny needles though and take a long time, but they are worth it.
Regarding pulling from the inside or outside of the yarn skein: I generally go from the outside as I find that deflated skeins tangle way too much for my liking. If the skein looks like it will misbehave from the get-go I re-skein it on the yarn winder from the get-go (but remember to do this to that yarn for the whole project, so that the yarn isn't twisted in different directions).
Wait, the yarn gets twisted in different directions and that matters?! Oh god, there are too many variables in this craft 😭😂
@@AliMakesEverything It's complicated. So I've hear other knitters talk about this. I looked a bit further into it and examined my yarn cakes.I found that they twist in the same direction on both ends. Irritated, that I had been gullible and even spread this information, this lead me to further investigation and I found a spinning blog post, that explained that pulling from the inside of a cake adds more twist than pulling from the outside (both will ad twist).
This whole topic - but for spinning, is according to the blogpost (from a blog called Jillian Eve) also a heated topic in the spinning community and if anyone knows about yarn twist, it must be people who spin.
Personally, I've made this "mistake" of knitting projects with a combination of skeins and cakes a couple of times and it's generally not noticeable in my finished projects - So I haven't experienced the problem of it.
Summa summarum: yes, it can affect the way the twist of the yarn if you change, but as long as you don't change between pulling from the inside and the outside of a yarn cake in the same project, it shouldn't be a major issue :)
Knitting words to ask your sister-tink, fingering 😂, brioche, steek. You are very cute, love your red lipstick! Very pretty. You do a lovely job chatting. Thank you!
Hahahaha these are great suggestions! Thank you so much! 😊
I swear we are twins bc I too am plotting finger “tip-less” gloves lol. I’m eager to see what you come up with
😂 We really are! So glad I’m not the only one with this weird idea!
Have you tried knitting a sock snake and adding afterthought toes, heels, cuffs? I enjoy mindlessly knitting on the sock tube on a 9" circular. I knit about 70 g into the tube, then mark where I need to snip and pick up stitches based on the recipient's measurements. The only thinking happens for a few hours at the end.
Okay I have not, but this is absolutely genius! I didn't really realize this was the way you could knit a sock?! I need to try this!
@@AliMakesEverything Jonathan at Jonathan's Days does it as his work knitting, i got it from him. Before I used a cane more often I would knit on one as I walked to work. Hope you enjoy it!!
I love that mustard color on you! As for yarn balls, a channel called Knitty Natty has a pattern for yarn cozies which might help? Just a thought. I know it's tricky with multiple balls and with something that tangles so easily. As for socks, I swear by the fish lips kiss heel - I highly recommend! It's the only one I use anymore!
Ooh that’s great to know! Thank you! 😄
I’ve been wanting to try Knitty Natty’s yarn cozies 🧐 Here’s some additional motivation to cast one on
@@amyhutchinson9080 She has them both in knit and crochet!
You might want to learn about burn tests, so that you can figure out the fibre content. ❤
Ooh very smart, thanks so much! There are so many secret knitting tricks 😂
I’ve been dying to make a No Frills cardigan and I can’t decide if your efforts are motivating or a warning away 😂 Do I have the dedication for this????
😂 Do you like knitting flat? If not I actually wonder if there’s a similar design knit in the round where you steek it after. Steeking seems scary but a project like this might make it worthwhile 😂
@@AliMakesEverything I really don’t mind knitting flat! Especially longer rows
@@amyhutchinson9080 Then I say go for it, have it going alongside other projects, and you too can have an ankle length cardigan in ten years 😂
@@AliMakesEverything amazing, I’ll hide it away in a bag two years from now out of frustration, and then you can wear yours when it’s done two years later and motivate me to pull it back out 😂
@@amyhutchinson9080 It’s a plan 😂
What about the tinsel mitts by Andrea mowry? They are fingerless gloves that have a mitten flap…. Or a modification of them
Oh, that's a good thought! The flap might get in my way, but I could see the rest of it being a good base to modify off of!
And ask your sister to define ‘tink’.
“Second sock syndrome,” “the sweater curse” and “ball band” #ask_kim 🤓🧶
😂 These are such good ones, thank you!
