  • After loooooong no flying months during this winter, I said to myself, can’t wait anymore… I packed and drove 9hrs to Lookout Mountain!
    I still had hill training, mountain flights left from my Novice Package deal I purchased back in October so it was perfect! My visit was four days and I knew coming during the windy spring season was a gamble… it was blown out the whole time I was there, hangwait literally was about to drive me crazy. But a window opened up in the evening of my last day at the park. Flew three times total. Got to record the first two with my GoPro. Hope you enjoy😊

    As a hang glider pilot for almost 35 years, when you did that last turn around at the last minute to get into the wind, my pucker Factor went above 10. I've been in that position also looking at my left wingtip, hoping I didn't scrape it and auger in. In 2003, I had a six and a half hour flight over Lookout Mountain about 5,000 over. I will never forget it.
    Another thing is to keep one hand on the base tube and one hand on the down tube, and you will have better roll authority. Not only that, but your hands were way too low on the down tubes when turning, and for your flare.
    Good job

    Well done! I have 500+ hours paragliding paramotoring in Europe and Australia, sadly never USA. and on final approach we do a few s turns to lose height, better to be too high than too low. It takes experience to know when you need to turn, you will get better at it. When you did that turn I thought 'oh shit' 😮, but you handled the problem well. Didn't panic and still managed to land on your feet! 😊. Those take off ramps look VERY SCARY!
    I've never seen a hangie harness like that where you hang down? Is it a training harness? Great take off and landing. I really could feel your joy! 😎 . Have fun.

      Thank you for checking my video out, and that makes me happy to hear that she got your interested in hang gliding😉 this has become my way of journaling my learning process. I do want more people to know about this sport in a real way. It can be done safely, and fear can be overcome by taking baby steps and learning from a good instructor. This sport has a bad rep from 70’s 80’s but that’s long time ago now, both the gliders and harness have evolved. I just want people to know that it is not the extreme sport they might imagine.

    Glad you are back!! 3 month jitters. You did great!!!! Sorry you have to travel so far to fly.
    Can I interject something for you to ask your instructors? This helped me a lot!!!!
    I quit doing the aircraft landing approach that you are doing. You are looking for landmarks and as you had said won’t be there as you fly other sites.
    I found that once I reached the LZ and knew that I was going to land, even if I got to the LZ at 1,000 feet, I did figure 8’s on the down wind side of the LZ and stayed there doing figure 8’s repeatedly over the same area. That way I was NEVER unsure that I would be too low or too high in my final. With figure 8’s you can come out of the 8 pattern easily at any point of the 8 and go into final.
    Your figure 8 can be as oblong as you want to burn off altitude.
    With an aircraft approach you have the unsure feeling of (as what happened to you, when on your down wind, uh oh, am I too low to complete the base then turn to final. On a figure 8 you always in a position to go straight in to land.
    The figure 8, for me removed all worries about landing. Just a thought! Check with your instructors.
    Sky Out!!!!!!!

    • @17999msl
      @17999msl Před rokem

      Keep on practicing that aircraft approach. You can use the house and get a feel for 45 degree angle to the LZ, and maintain that 45 degree throughout the pattern. That really helps me. It’s probably in the turquoise book, but I can’t read.

    • @nanoraflyz
      @nanoraflyz  Před rokem

      Woooow that’s a great advice thank you. They specifically told me to keep the left turn path tho, just because it is a flight park, by their site specific rules I guess and also me being a newer flyer they want me to just stick with it you know. So you are saying they were cool with you doing figure 8 over the LZ and going into your landing approach?

      Daniel! I can totally relate to what you are going through.. I started taking classes in the summer 2021. That winter was so difficult to get through with very little practices. This past winter also was extremely difficult without air time over three months. I got myself into lots of fitness related routines during that time which has helped me to distract myself from getting too frustrated about not flying. I get it 100% get it. One of my good pilot friends told me, after she did her tenth flights at Lookout she felt relaxed. No longer went crazy about flying. We’ll get there one day. We are just still too excited and inpatient. Getting disciplined is a huge part of this sport. We are in the midst of that.

    @mickey1299 Před rokem +1

    Personally , i think for someone not current , that first landing was not too bad . Yes you did a bit low , but an option i use faced with that is the same as a down wind landing , wheels (legs) up . I've done it many times , following a deliberately landing in very light winds , but once when i got caught on a beach low with no options . I should mention , that i broke both legs summit like 30 years ago , with a motorcycle , so when faced with a down wind landing , i don't even try to land and run it off , i just put it down the wheels .
    Yes you should pay more attention , pay attention to your flight planning , but let's not forget , even the best laid plans can go wrong . But to my mind , it's how you deal with it , that's the important bit . My advice to you , is don't forget your wheels , it's an option .
    By the way , i fly a Calypso , and Target , And i'm rated hill , winch , and power , with a doodlebug power unit , and even got involved with training at one point . Don't ask me how many hours i have , because i could tell ya , but at last count when i rated power , i had something like 150 winch launches . Currently like you , i'm not current , i haven't flown since 2019 as i got bogged down with a different task . I'm hoping that will all change in 2024 , when i get over to Spain . But then you are current , keep it up , huh .

      @nanoraflyz  Před rokem +1

      Thank you so much for your feedback. Ya I’m aware flaring in turn is not good. I talked to multiple pilots about the option of rolling in. I think my head always prepares myself to flare land. I need to train myself to be more flexible and adoptable in different landing conditions. Many more days, month and years of practices to come!
