Our Annual Jared Bednar Appreciation Segment. Interesting and Fun Rule Changes

- Another year, another NHL season for the Colorado Avalanche already filled with injuries. Once again, the Avalanche are holding their own and near the top of the division standings despite these injuries.
However, once again it seems like head coach Jared Bednar is getting shown little love by the hockey media for the job he is doing navigating these injuries and making his team relevant. Will this ever end?
We also look at a fun article in The Athletic that takes user suggestions for rule changes in the NHL. Some make a whole lot of sense, some don't, and some are flat our hilarious and should be implemented immediately.
All that plus looking at tonight's game against the Vancouver Canucks!

Fun Fact: Jared Bednar needs 15 more victories to become the winningest coach in franchise history. (That includes the Nordiques, not just the Avs.)
Easily the Avs 🐐 coach
We talk a lot about what Sakic did with players but hiring that guy was a hell of a move.
@@stephanea5364 And under such disadvantageous conditions! (Thanks, Patrick.)
He will get there by Christmas lol
🇺🇸 Bedsy 2024 🇺🇸
Going to the game tomorrow!
I hope you enjoy! Cheer the Avs on to a win!
One more Bednar tidbit in honor of this episode: Here on CZcams look up the video "When Hockey Coaches Lose It" and go to the 2:36 mark, where Coach Jim Playfair (of the Abbotsford Heat) goes absolutely bonkers smashing a hockey stick to bits. Then notice the calm assistant coach enter the picture behind him at 2:45, eventually seeking to restrain the coach who's going berserk. You tell me who it is!😉
Interesting
I like the 3,2,1 point format idea but I wish it was more like 10 minute o.t. with 4 on 4. I miss the days when o.t. did not end quickly, but it can't go all night. The penalty shot idea is brilliant, what if it was like a double minor but the coach decides if it is 4 min/ 2 min with a penalty shot. Lastly, get rid of the trapezoids and make the crease the old size with better rules to protect the goalies. Let them be on dang-its more often if they have the courage to try to play the puck in the corner! Happy Thanksgiving;)
I love the point suggestion and wish it was law lol
Stuffing if it was baked in the turkey, dressing otherwise. You guys *should know this*.
Exactly why I say dressing
You learn something everyday
Soooo ima be real, the only rules change that I could get behind was 3,2,1,0 point scheme but I think that would be a real good change. Haha
I love the idea
First thing I grab is the leg. Love dark meat and smothering it in gravy 😁
Dressing , that’s the only option lol
It's up to us in Avs nation to appreciate Bednar as much as possible cuz the rest of the hockey world never will lol. Still so baffling how a coach that's won in the echl, ahl and nhl and keeps an injury riddled team humming every year gets totally ignored, imo he's the best coach in hockey right there with Cooper
I absolutely agree
Not that he was anywhere close to being considered for a call up, but did y’all see the Avs suspended Zhuravlyov? It says he went home to attend personal matters. I hope all is well for him and his family. Also curious what that means for the Avs if he doesn’t return since his contract runs through next season.
But they also suspended him, which is the intersting part
It’s quite interesting and I’m not totally privy to all the details at this time
It will be an interesting story to follow. Does placing a player on suspension take them off your books?
@@theyetireport5511 not necessarily, but sending him back to Russia and him no longer being part of the team definitely does. But his contract doesn't impact them at the Avalanche level anyway
If the Avs go back to back this year, bedsy should get coach of the year, that may need the only way.
Watch it be against the Devils and Lindy still get the nod lol
Unfortunately voting for all awards is done before the playoffs begin, so there would be no way to vote for him if they do win it all again
I say all games should 2 pts per game. 2pts for regulation win, 1.5 for OT/shootout win 0.5 for OT loss. NHL is the only league that rewards pts for a loss
Oooooo half points lol
Are the Avalanche injured players soon to be back in action?
Girard is the closest. Bednar said maybe next week.
Girard likely this week. Byram likely in another week or two. Nichushkin probably 2-3 weeks along with Helm. Landeskog likely around all star break.
Who knows, they’re not very transparent
@@day1avsfan907 they actually have been.
Everyone is day to day at this point lol
I would love to see a goalie serve his own penalty or give the opposing team the choice of who serves the penalty for the goalie. #Binnington #WaterBottle
While I'm not with you on this rule change, those hashtags are hilarious.🤣
Or make the goalie take a penalty shot from who he penalized 😎
I think more than the players, Sakic gets the credit for what Bednar does and for the success. That's not totally unfair either.
Bednar just always gets passed over lol
There are different levels as to the credit they should get. Sakic does deserve a lot of credit for finding the right players, but Bednar deserves just as much for getting the most out of those players in his system. Just getting the right players doesn't always guarantee success if the system isn't right. It clearly is with Bednar.
I dunno. Ted Williams used to compare managers to furniture in terms of their interchangeability. There's some truth in both sides. I was more referring to the hockey world viewpoint and less to my own. I like Bedsie, hope he stays for the long term.
The only way Bednar might win the Jack Adams is if they pul an Islanders and win 4 in a row
By then the Kraken will win 18 games in a row and they will get the clout over Bednar lol
Highly unlikely that Bednar will ever win the Jack Adams trophy while he's coaching the Avs. If it was ever going to happen it would have been the 17-18 season like you said.
I'm out on all the rule changes except the 3 point system, but it will probably not change to that because it creates more parity and usually keeps the standings interesting much later in the season which means that more teams are playing meaningful games in March and April which means more revenue. And the NHL is still largely driven by gate revenue.
I would like to see them take away the trapezoid or at the very least allow the goalie to gain possession of the puck in the trapezoid and then skate it out. It was originally put in because goalies like Brodeur were so good at handling the puck that it killed the forecheck. It was meant to increase scoring and entertainment. My argument has always been - what was more entertaining than watching Hasek wander into the corner after a loose puck? That was like watching the clown car at a Circus, you never knew what was going to come out of there.
Ooo I like the getting rid of the trapezoid idea
I really wasn't keen on the rules changes you bandied about (at least almost all of them), but I did think of one that makes no sense to me which I would like to see abolished. We've probably all seen the hilarious play when Patrick Roy skated the puck across the center red line, right? (1997, vs. NYR) Why in the world should that be illegal? What harm is it doing? Why is hockey made a better game by forbidding a goalie from skating across center ice? How often would it ever happen? Virtually NEVER! Do we really need to outlaw it for goalies as crazy as wild man Patrick Roy? Are they afraid goalies will start leaving their net to come join the power play?🤣🤣
How could you not want to see a ref skating around with both arms in the air!? And yes, I agree that goalie rule is dumb. They are a player with a position. Let them skate all the to the other side of the ice if they want.
@@LockedOnAvalanche It's like a rule made by a cranky curmudgeon to make sure nutty goalies like Roy don't have TOO much fun!🙄
Let em play lol
Offsides negating a goal should be limited to effecting the play. A goal being called off 30 seconds after an offsides occurred when it didn't change the course of the play is bad for the game
How about on a delay penalty if they score they still go on a powerplay
Oooooo spicy
