  • Today I am out on a special jaunt with Julia Hartley and her son, Elijah. We're in Surrey, in the shadow of Box Hill, part of the Surrey Hills between Dorking and Leatherhead. We meet up with Matthew Holdsworth and his son, Josh, to investigate the ancient ford and crossing point of the river Mole. In place of the ford today are delightful stepping stones which provide a fun way to traverse the river without getting your feet wet.
The walk is peppered with an array of British broad leaf trees, including London Plane, Ash, Oak and Hazel. Others are Box, sloe, Walnut and Horse Chestnut.

Box Hill is one of my favorite places to visit since my Dad first took me there in the side car of his motorcycle combination in the early 1950s. Just a bit of trivia regarding the Stepping Stones, apparently the fist stones were placed there around 1841, but destroyed as a part of the anti invasion measures in 1940. I can't imagine that their removal would have held up the invading German Army for long! Replacement stones were then installed in 1946. Thanks for another great video Richard.

We used to go to Box Hill when I was little, when we lived in Hounslow. My parents liked it there & sometimes we took a picnic. I vaguely remember being passed across the stepping stones or sometimes carried on my fathers shoulders. They said they liked the views. I seem to be having an evening where I get videos made by you that remind me of places from my earlier life. How curious. Thankyou for sharing.
