  • Among hundreds of orphans we have rescued over the years, Vaarti’s story stands out as one of the most extraordinary moments we have ever witnessed. It is a testament to all that is great about elephants - their intuition, their empathy, and their intelligence.
Ithumba is not typically where an orphan’s story begins. As one of our three Reintegration Units, it is where an orphan graduates only once they have outgrown the Nursery. The orphans at Ithumba are older, ready to learn the ways of the wild and ultimately reclaim their place among Tsavo’s wild elephants. And yet, improbably, Ithumba is where Vaarti’s story began.
Read the full story of what unfolded at Ithumba on 18th September 2019: www.sheldrickw...
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

On the morning of 18th September 2019, a female elephant and a newborn calf strode up to the stockades. This in and of itself was not unusual, as Ithumba plays host to wild visitors on a daily basis. However, several things gave our Keepers pause: They had never seen this female before, but at eight or so years old, she was far too young to be the calf’s mother. The fact that she was not lactating settled the matter. They were not in the company of other elephants, nor did any more arrive in their wake. The calf was very thin and looked as if he had not had milk for several days. The Keepers began to wonder if he was an orphan. The behaviour that followed confirmed their suspicions. The calf left the female and ran over to a group of bulls at the nearby water trough. Starving to the point of desperation, he went around to each one and attempted to nurse from them. Only when the bulls moved away did he reluctantly return to the female.
As the desperate scenes continued with the calf now making his way into the midst of the dependent orphans trying to suckle various different calves, the KWS warden was called to scene as it was now abundantly clear that this baby was an orphan. The young female he arrived with had already stepped aside granting access to him. Once she saw that he was in safe hands, she moved off into the bush and was not seen again. We will never know how she came to find this calf - or, indeed, how he became orphaned, although we suspect poaching, as a dead female was later discovered by our aerial unit a few days later. We are certain that she came to Ithumba with the express intention of delivering him into safe hands.

@@glennmcgrath971 Animals are indeed more ancient, more complex, and in many ways more sophisticated than man. In terms of Nature they are truly more perfect because they remain within the ordered scheme of Nature and live as Nature intended. They are different to us, honed by natural selection over millennia so they should not be patronised, but rather respected and revered. And of all the animals, perhaps the most respected and revered should be the Elephant, for not only is it the largest land mammal on earth, but also the most emotionally human

Reading some of your people comments is absolutley nauseating especially bringing God into it. It seems no expense is spared on these animals, in a country with one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world and 25% of kids in Kenya will not make it to their 10th birthday because they lack the basic necessities in life like food, medical care, and clean water. Yet the priority is put on these animals? I wonder how many children would benefit from a hot meal, and a private plane ride to see a doctor? Absolutely Shameful.

This is incredible, but not surprising. I always loved elephants (and all animals) but I have gained SO MUCH insight into their intelligence, empathy and individuality since I discovered SWT. I love learning about these babies (and the other orphan species as well of course) and have started to explain to people how elephants are, IMO, better than (so many) humans - caring for each other in a way our species is often unable to do, given the walls, borders, cultural, racial, social, and political barriers we have created between ourselves. They inspire me to be a better human.

Very lucky indeed - humans and elephants alike. How did that young female elephant know to bring the little orphan calf to the right people at the right time?

All that can be surmised is that other elephants had communicated to her that there was a place where people took care of young elephants, and where it was, and she brought him. Was she his older sister? It's not known, but she learned where to take him and she did, and for that, he's alive! That article at their website is very good to read.

I love that an older female elephant that has never even visited Ithumba was with Vaarti and assisted him there. I'm sure she heard all of the elephant rumblings from a far distance and possibly went that way with him to help him find his family (at least in my mind). But that spirit of his has helped him to thrive while at Kaleku. I'm so happy he bonded with Mayan. 🙏🏽🤍
EDIT: Maybe she was his older sister? I know mature elephants can reproduce for many decades.
