  • As part of a commission for Suicide Girls, I needed to recreate an embossed metal plate for a vintage candy machine. So, I took a gamble on MDF, cardstock and epoxy resin to replicate the raised type.

TOOLS & MATERIALS FEATURED IN THIS VIDEO
▶ DeWalt DWE7480 Compact Job Site Table Saw: amzn.to/2naVDlR
    ▶ Ridgid Oscillating Belt/Spindle Sander: amzn.to/2jB3dEB
▶ Bosch Plunge and Fixed Base Router Kit: amzn.to/2gyZ1TE
    ▶ 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Spray Adhesive: amzn.to/2sPyH0Y
▶ West System 105 Epoxy Resin (Quart): amzn.to/2ugqIba
▶ West System 205 Fast Hardener (7 fl. oz.): amzn.to/2ugTmZR
▶ West System Mini Pump Set #300 (Required for proper measuring): amzn.to/2sPuE4Y
▶ Modern Masters Metal Effects Iron Paint: amzn.to/2s0r9pu
    OTHER NOTES
▶ I used plain manila file folders for the cardstock, which I cut using my old Craftwell eCraft plotter.
▶ Before coating the type with epoxy, I actually added a fourth layer of cardstock off camera for a little more depth.
▶ Before painting the cured epoxy, I cleaned it with soapy water and sanded it with 320 grit.
▶ To rust the iron paint (see above), you can use Modern Masters' own Rust Activator solution, but I use a simple mixture of 1 part white vinegar, 4 parts hydrogen peroxide, and salt.

John Hansen Isn’t 100 and “balls” an engineer joke (wordplay)? My father is a civil engineer and he uses that term when we’re measuring and doing projects together. It always makes me chuckle.

I almost forgot about this style of 3D printing. In high school, I took an engineering class. One project we had take a piece of Lego, modeled it in software, used a slicing software and plot cutter, and built the layers up in much the same way.

Not really 3d printing in today's standards however. Still very much the same idea

I also found him by the 2x4 challenge and have also gone though a bunch of backlog videos. I am honestly surprised that Wesley isn't more popular given the quality (and that he has kept with making these videos with only a few hundred subscribers for so long...) Hopefully things start taking off for him CZcams wise.

I dont know of yours can but my vinyl cutter can do thicker things like craft foam. I have seen craft foam with an adhesive backing that you may be able to use to get the thickness you want. Would solve having to line so many layers up and wouldnt soak up the epoxy in the same way and get jagged on the ends. Not speaking from experience but may be worth a try.
