- Building a house with my husband, while I was pregnant was a huge challenge! It’s been two years since we moved into our custom dream home in northern British Columbia, Canada. Our family has grown by another person and we are filling up the rooms! In today’s video, I will walk you through the entire house, share our design process, and all of the DIY projects we did that saved us a ton of money!

den curtain pattern -
I am almost twice your age and have learned one thing about curtains... i keep it simple and use solids and and use patterns for accents.
If i absolutely love a particular pattern, i purchase it and make throw pillow covers, small throw, etc.
That way when i finally get sick of the pattern i can just change it out with another pattern i love at the moment.
But hey, that’s me.

Agreed! It so much easier to change out pillows for seasons or holidays. Color changes etc. I have no print, soft gray curtains but anything goes for pillows!
Steph, what a beautiful home. I love the ideas of "hiding the mess" that we all KNOW happens behind the scenes. Honey, don't apologize for your kid-friendly furniture. It's supposed to be when your kids are small (pre-school age). Your family needs to be able to LIVE here. And I love all of the white. It is clean and calm...even in the fabulous laundry room! Thank you so much for the tour.
All my kids are big now and one thing I miss is always having a wee rocking chair in the living room.
I love the play space in the basement. The kids can play, then nap! :-) I, also, LOVE the purple in the girls' room. Maybe they will go for pink accessories if they are involved a little in picking out accessories.
Your son keeps his room so clean. :-) You have a lovely home. And I admire all the clever touches you have put in, the way you saved money diy & with father-in-laws help.
Whenever I said I wanted a new couch and love seat, people would say, "Wait until your kids are grown or they will ruin it anyway." When my kids were grown and I wanted new ones, they would say, "You are old now, why do you need new furniture? The grandkids will just ruin it!"

What a beautiful home, and it is extra special because your blood, sweat and tears went into it. I don’t think a home is ever finished, but what great bones to work with to build your style onto . You have such a great down to earth attitude...love it!
My oldest is now 12. She kept wanting to change the color in her room. So we went with a very light calm gray and she brings in the color with bedding, accents etc.
Lovely house, more white IKEA than I'd want to live with, but beautifully laid out and spacious. The command station and central two-sided fireplace are really good ideas, and that homemade dining table is to die for.
I had to laugh at the book stepping stones ... my kids have totally done the exact same thing. :).
That view you have when on the stairs is to die for!!
I love it when your little guy is in the video! His little gurglings and noises take me back to the days when mine were young - nothing is more sweet and pure.

Yes. My basement was a teenage hangout. Now it is my big sewing studio, and small family room area with couch and tv.

Maybe you would like a pretty picture in your laundry room instead of wallpaper.
Maybe pink curtains in girls' room would do. Maybe a pink rug and bedding. The walls are beautiful.

It's really cozy and comfortable for such a big space! I love how you guys designed it. The laundry room is amazing and I agree with the wallpaper idea eventually. I only have a laundry closet but at least it's in the 2nd floor which I love compared to having it in the basement. I have 3 kids that make messes and honestly I would go crazy if I worry too much about it too. Decluttering the toys really does help. Thanks for the house tour!

You have a beautiful home. I can relate to 'hiding the mess'. It was a major factor in buying our house. Lots of built-in cupboards and even desks in the kids bedrooms. Your laundry is gorgeous btw.

Your home is so beautiful, Steph. My favorite parts are the kitchen, the laundry room, the front door, and the view out the windows when you’re at the top of the steps!! My ex-husband and I were general contractor’s, too. It was stressful but such fun. Choosing the plans, deciding how it would sit on the property, watching the first shovel of dirt get dug, and on and on! It was very rewarding. Sadly, after 10 years we got divorced. I still miss that house! Lol!!! You and your hubby have done a great job. I love your home!!

Love your laundry and the bright colours scattered around your house. It's nice to see the whole layout and which direction rooms are in, as a lot of the videos have the image switched so I've been confused many times as to which side of the house things are on!

Thanks for the tour, you have a lovely home and I'm so impressed with all that you and your husband did yourself. This is a pretty simple idea but when I saw your dining room table, I imagined a pretty vase with fresh flowers in the centre - an easy and simple way to add colour and a little sparkle. Doesn't have to be fancy, I buy mine at the grocery store :)

Beautiful home. Instead of continually updating, create memories. Update when the kids are done with college. Now is the time to enjoy each year you have left with them. And prepare for retirement. It goes fast.

Gorgeous house Steph! You did a great job and are right to be proud of the home you created for your beautiful little family 💕We also built our own house and I appreciate the dedication and sheer determination it took to complete it ... especially with a baby on board! We finished the woodwork through the whole night before the flooring was fitted ... while the babies slept on a mattress on the floor! Wish I had a video like this to remember those times.

Wonderful open layout. Great ideas on hiding messes. I have the same problem with handling mail and paper. I can't imagine three sets of school papers every day. I love your pine ceilings--very scandinavian.
I can imagine your teenage kids playing Foosball and playing Minecraft on your living room sofas in your basement. He-he!
If you want the spaces to feel warmer or cozied, incorporate fabrics like draperies to absorb some of the echoes. So that you dont block any light through your beautiful windows, hang the drapery rod higher than the windows and corner to corner on the window wall. When the curtains are open, there will be plenty of space to stack the curtains in front of solid walls. Maybe try it in your TV room--I like the fabric you showed. It should be really good for showing movies.
In the girls rooms, consider putting pink on only one wall. Or put up pink curtains across one wall for warmth and acoustics. Best wishes moving forward.

It is lovely! You did very well designing it and building so much yourselves. From having raised 4 children, I would suggest paring down the toys. Having said that, I couldn't do it when mine were little. This is a hindsight suggestion that I wish I had done in order to simplify our lives. I love the colors in your kitchen! Mine is white on white on white.. which I love too because it is so small - 3 steps to everything. Thanks for the tour. It helps put things in perspective when you are in one area on other segments.

Your home is lovely. I especially love the wood beams in the bedroom and your huge laundry room. One suggestion: you could always consider stenciling the laundry space instead of wallpaper. That way none of the shelving has to be removed! ( something simple:) Also I think the kitchen pine ceiling would be awesome painted in white. This would coordinate with your bedroom and more importantly it wouldn’t distract/ clash with your flooring. Just suggestions as you asked. ( can you tell I’m Cdn too?) I LOVE the stacked windows & that you can easily see out of them upstairs! Love the 2 sided fireplace and that laundry room! I´ve always wanted a 2 story house and was glad to see the laundry room on the 2nd floor-that´s what I plan to do(i think it was on the 2nd floor, now I have to go back & look). I want something like a big-not over the top-queen anne style house-made light,bright & airy.

Nice! Good work. We built our own home also. Literally. I stood on scaffolding and held sheetrock over my head while hubby nailed it. I designed our kitchen lay out on graph paper. Then we went to a store, bought the cabinets, brought them home on a flatbed trailer. And hung them ourselves. But, that was all 30+ years ago. I’m ready for some renovations now. I love the tongue and groove ceilings. I think you’ve done a good job with decorating. Simple, clean with pops of color. Love that kitchen tile. BIG THUMBS UP! 👍🏻
