  • Most of the motorcycle world has embraced EFI but for the motorcycle drag racing application the Carburetors vs. Electronic Fuel Injection debate is an interesting and controversial one for turbo, nitrous and naturally aspirated drag bikes. We ask three drag bike tuning experts, Pro Mod / Pro Stock 70 year old legend and creator of the motorcycle drag racing Lectron carb Paul “Fast By” Gast, NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Team Jerry Savoie championship winning crew chief and fuel injection advocate Tim Kulungian, and multi class business and team owner Ed Grothus of Grothus Dragbikes their opinions on the pros and cons of motorcycle carburetors and fuel injection. From performance, price, simplicity, reliability and more, we cover it all in this in-depth feature. We are asking you for your opinion as well.

    Jack, I fully understand the discussion was from these guys particular drag racing perspective, as in the class they run--all of which are bar bike classes. What no one touched on is any drag bike that doesn’t run a wheelie bar. 90 percent of those bike run efi and for a good reason. Unless it one of the fastest no bar drag bikes, as in pro street or grudge bike, a no bar bike needs to be able to meter fuel properly in areas besides WOT.--as in the holeshot. Lectrons don’t drive away from a standstill very well when you need to feed the throttle in while feeding the clutch at the same time. Not saying it’s impossible cause they can be made to work relatively good for a grudge setup (super long bikes that can basically leave wide open or damn close to it and with a slider or gen 2 LU clutch. Can’t think of a single pro street competitor running lectrons or another carb for that matter. Carbs absolutely do not work worth a shit with the modern blow thru turbos of today. Keith Lynn, terry Keizer, etc etc (you know all the guys I’m referring to jack)they all ran draw throughs on the old funny bikes of the day. Steve rice had/has mechanical injection on his Kawasaki funny’s. Remember Scotty crippen had a slick Hahn efi setup on that funny or promod turbo back in the 90s that would fly on a good pass but with the tech of the day was hard to get moving with right boost level needed. Today’s ecus have advanced anti lag and boost control strategies that are light years from what those guys ran.
    So what I’m saying, and not knocking the video, don’t take it that way, you polled 3 great engine builders/tuners but scope of the discussion was slanted. You said motorcycle dragracing efi vs carb. But the only dragracing category the opinions came from the perspective of a no bar racer/class. Poll anyone running a dragbike without a bar or ANY DRAGBIKE powered by a modern engine (non gs/kz-or the few and far between busa engines with Lectrons) and they will undoubtedly say Efi efi efi! But was still a great discussion nonetheless.

    I like both honesty. If you have the knowledge then its nice to open the laptop and make a quick adjustment. Each is their own 💪

    The Holly Dominator ECU is pretty popular with the Cleetus McFarland channel drag corvettes. Stick shift and 2 speed powerglide, They hold a stick shift record...

    I have enjoyed and been frustrated by both. Does anybody still use mechanical injection like the old Hilborn setups?

  • @MasterLee1955
    @MasterLee1955 Před 4 lety

    I like both although all I have are Lectrons right now.
    When I build the no bar GS I'm going FI , I think it's of more benefit to a no bar bike because you have nothing to lean on so to speak.
    I have to try FI, I'm a geek like that.

    Really I guess it depends on the application. There are things where I like seeing carburetors there things where I like seeing EFI and there are things where I like seeing mechanical fuel injection - bikes or cars :-)

    From watching this it is clear in drag racing the performance difference is small and likely favors fuel injection as in most racing. Both systems require tuning and maintenance so what you are familiar with is a big deal. At the moment there would seem to be a lot of support and knowledge to make carb bikes fast.

    It all depends if you're an old school guru where you had nothing but carbs to contend with from the 40s to 80s approx..OR a younger generation..90s till now... electronics guru who can understand modern technology well.

    My 1998 HD came factory equipped with EFI from Magneti Merelli which was absolute garbage. When I converted it to carburetated it ran significantly better. It likes the Mikuni HSR-42 much better. Magneti Merelli was HD's first attempt at EFI and was absolute garbage...

    • @robertmason8341
      @robertmason8341 Před 4 lety

      Not exactly a valid point because you switched from a company’s first foray into electronic fuel injection to carb (mikuni) from company that are pretty much the master of the m/c carburetor (them and keihan). Now if you would have switched it to Harley’s 2nd or 3rd gen Delphi injection you would NOT be able to say it ran significantly better cause they just don’t. The Delphi system is very nice system in stock form and fully tunable from a myriad of aftermarket vendors. The key thing is it was their first attempt at efi, can’t judge a technology based on one company failed first shot at something. And today’s efi will run circles around a carb in everything except and it’s a slim except--wide open throttle max power-startability, response, fuel efficiency and overall drivability efi wins hands down.
