I always loved how cool the social groups are portrayed in this movie. Arnie's a nerd but his best friend is Dennis, the jock, and Arnie dates Leigh, the hot new girl in school that normally the more popular guys would be sweeping up. And the major bully pair is Moochie and Buddy who are a lanky biker dude and the fat kid. So interesting.

It's actually very realistic. I was in high school in the 80's and there was a much looser social strata. People weren't nearly as stuck up and nerds could be friends with jocks and popular kids.

This was always one of my favorite John Carpenter movies...my brother and I used to watch it all the time when we were kids. Then in my freshmen year of college, I had to read the novel for my English class! There were a few things that were left out that I wish had been in the movie (including the character of Roland LeBay). Another thing had to do with Arnie’s “transformation”. In the movie, they seemed to only concentrate on his mental/emotional changes...but in the book, Arnie had really bad acne that suddenly started clearing up once he bought Christine...also the fact that he wore really thick glasses then soon after buying Christine no longer needed them! Both of these were important plot points in the book; just as important as the way his attitude changed. I think all of those changes in Arnie should have been shown in the movie so the audience could see how much control Christine truly had over him; especially since the character of Roland was eliminated.

    • @chargedattack3559
      @chargedattack3559 Před 4 lety +2

It was kind of shown by him ditching the glasses. In the 50s that was completely unheard of! Stunning movie and I totally get what you're saying.

The reason why they cut out Roland lebay was because of an American werewolf in London where the main character’s dead friend is taunting him into killing himself. The producers of Christine was afraid that it would be too similar, so they cut Roland out and made Christine evil from the beginning.

In the trailer for the Stephen King movie Cats Eye, Christine and Cujo appear. Also it's been said that Randall Flagg, Pennywise , and the entity from Children of the Corn are all the same evil in different forms. So it would be cool if the evil in Christine was also the same evil. I like it better in the movie how Christine was evil from the start rather than just haunted by a ghost.

Christine is my favorite Stephen King book/movie. I think if they would have got big name actors like Kevin Bacon it would have made the movie less mysterious.
When I re-watched this movie I always get amazed by the acting and connection between Arnie and Christine.
I honestly believe there isn't a better connection between characters in a horror movie. Michael and Lori's connection isn't on this level, neither is Freddy and Nancy's. I will go as far as Jason and Pamela Voorhees's connection doesn't match up to Arnie and Christine's.
As for a remake it would be a mistake. I don't think there's an actor who can pull off Arnie. Also I believe if there's a remake they would try to make it like the original.
The only way I see a remake happen is if Stephen King and John Carpenter work with the guys who remade Halloween.

I never got the impression Arnie was adopting LeBay's persona. Always felt to me like the relationship he had with Christine is what corrupted him. I personally prefer the idea that the car was born conscious, that it has feelings, desire, and motivation, like a possessive girlfriend.

  • @TheHorrorMiserMontyG

Christine is my 2nd favorite John Carpenter film, The Thing is first, and it's such a fantastic horror movie. The relationship between Arnie and Christine is what drives the movie. As for me, this movie reminded me so much of The Car, another one of my old school horror classic, but Christine improves on what The Car did. I was a bit disappoint that they made some changes in the movie because I love Roland LeBay's character in the book. Overall, another excellent video Cody.

A little trivia on why the book and movie are different was because of an American werewolf in London. The movie had just come out a couple years earlier and they didn't want to look like they were copying the whole talking to a dead person and mentally break down.

I fell in love with the movie so I went out and bought the soundtrack on record or what we call today vinyl. I still have that vinyl as we speak with the same mint condition as it was in 1983 when I bought it.
I bought the movie on blu ray, the DTS is magnificent, it's a step up from the DVD which had a terrible sound on it. The sound on the blu ray is awesome especially the part near the end where arnie pops out of the windshield and grabs Leigh. That part scared the shit out of me for the first time in years since the theatre. This movie is one of my top favourites.

I think that both versions of Christine's origin work in their own way. The version where she's possessed gives the justification for Arnie acting more like LeBay, while the version where she's just evil from the start frees her up for a new identity, which I think they did a great job with as a possessive, controlling girlfriend.

Funny thing today going to the markets with Anthony was we drove by a building where a red 57 Chevy was on a rotating display in front and I called out " Oh Shit, Christine Lives!". Funny enough it's what led me to your channel when he reminded me.
This film was a childhood favorite, I would watch it on VHS And on Ch.13 ( Which played it a lot). The score is forever incredible and proves that the best and most terrifying music comes from simple beats and sounds. It worked for Carpenter, it worked for Zombi, Even Session 9 has simplicity that will make you look over your shoulder. One scene that always stuck with me is the "Ok, Show Me!" scene. The high beams hidden within the synth and the flawless bleed in of The Viscounts classic "Harlem Nocturne". I searched for that song for 15 years and one October evening at a candy shop of all places I heard it and stayed in there until I got the title and have played it since.
As for King adaptations this one is in my top 3. Along with ( many will dispute because of the changes) The Shining, and one I feel doesn't get enough love "The Night Flyer".
Well done Again. Keep up the awesome.

12:09 - The screenwriter(s) cut out the owner's spirit controlling Arnie because 1) they were looking for ways to cut down the story for runtime and 2) AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON had just come out at the time of preproduction. AAWIL had a spirit visiting the main character and everyone involved thought CHRISTINE would just be copying or ripping off that movie, etc. That's why the plot was changed.

I have loved this movie since I was in elementary school and I'm 38 years old now. I saw the movie before reading the book and was instantly hooked. I read the book not too long after and was amazed at how much more detail there is. I'm a hard core Christine fan and even with the differences between the novel and movie, I can't help but to love them both. I too often wondered why they left out Roland LeBay from the movie since he was actually a big part of the novel second to Christine herself. All John Carpenter really mentioned about it was that it was too complex and wanted to keep the movie simple and easy to follow. I don't know how accurate that is but in a way I can see what he means. But, he could have at least had Roland sell Christine to Arnie instead of George. Ah well. Either way Christine seems to be gaining more popularity as time passes. I'm meeting more people who are into the movie as I am. I dream to one day own a Christine clone. Id love one of the actual cars from the movie as there are 2 or 3 in existence, but that will take a lot of cash that I don't have. Christine will be a movie that never gets old. The fact that the regeneration scenes were done long before computer generated graphics were even a thought is what really makes this movie that much better. Really the ONLY way this movie can get ruined would be with a remake slathered with CGI. Should one ever be made I vow to never watch it and stay loyal to only the original. Thank you for posting your review, I really enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing more. Happy motoring!

Cody Leach You're welcome! Oh and I just watched the behind the scenes extras on my Christine DVD. The reason Roland LeBay wasn't brought into the movie is because the ghost and decomposition of a dead character being part of the life of the main character was just done 2 years prior on An American Werewolf in London. John Carpenter felt it would have been too similar to that movie to have it done again in Christine. This is directly quoted from John Carpenter himself.

Cody Leach I thought so too. I think the differences for the purpose of the ghost character would have made enough of a difference to include Roland in the movie, but, oh well. Anyways I thought you'd like to know :)

Having a dead character in the backseat talking to Arnie would have given off too much of an American Werewolf in London vibe and eliminated much of the mystery of not knowing.

I just saw this movie a few days ago with no context of what it was and I thought it was pretty damn good. Even more so because I didn't know what to expect and didn't see it from the beginning, I first thought this was a teen movie about girls and stuff in the 80's but then the car started doing shit on it own. It really caught me by surprise but still didn't seem like a horror movie until later when they mentioned the "suicide" and the previous owner. Nice!

Awesome review Cody, I purchased the US Import of this Carpenter classic on Blu ray because the UK version was crap with a awful transfer, I agree this is very underrated film often overlooked & Keith Gordon as Arnie is terrifying in this, I never read the novel so I didn't know the car was actually possessed by the previous owner, I agree with you that would've translated better than just having the car evil as we never know why the car becomes possessed in the movie it just is.
    Great reviews Cody.

Cody Leach Buddy and his two friends are chased at high speed in their Camaro by Christine. It takes place in the winter in a closed state park. Christine rams the Camaro into a concrete Island killing the two friends. King describes Buddy feeling like he was drenched in hot water but realizes it was his friends blood. Buddy escapes the wreck but Roland’s ghost appears before Buddy dies and says” that’s the end of you shitter”

Your review of Christine is spot on, and I agree with you. I think the movie Christine is an underrated film and is under recognized. It’s funny, because I first watched Kristine on TV, and I was a lot younger so to me, the idea of a car that killed people didn’t really appeal to me, so at first, I thought I hated the movie. Last year, I decided that I would read the book. I read the book and loved it! So I would then decided I would watch the movie. I watched the entire movie on video, and it was amazing! The book helped me to appreciate the characters, and what the car Christine was all about.
I also share your same negative. I did think it was weird that they had Christine start out to be evil and unlike the book, they didn’t have the ghost of Roland do you Labe possessing Arnie. I’ve watched Christine several times and I love the acting, and I love what they did with this movie. The score definitely was awesome! John Carpenter really did good with this movie.
Sorry if there are any miss spellings. I use dictation on my phone.

  • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017

Top notch review of a lost underrated classic. They don't make movies like this anymore. It's weird that with the 80's revival going on that this hasn't been remade or otherwise revived.

I agree that the whole possessed car aspect should have been the same as the original source material had it. perhaps showing what the brother told them happened when his brother had the car first then cut to his selling the car to Arnie. After this movie came out and I'd seen it tn the theater I sooooo wanted a 58 Fury! Ended up with a 77 Delta 88 instead LOL!

Keith Gordon is great in this movie, from his slow transformation as he becomes possessed to the subtle smiles he gives when being told horrid things while trying to act concerned. I always felt like he was the basis for the personality of Dean from Supernatural. Also, this is the rare film that sets up and pays off, and has little details you don't pick up on until after repeat viewings. I'm also dismayed this film is so lowly regarded.
I think having the car be evil from the beginning is better. King tends to overexplain his supernatural occurrences (see The Shining).

But let me tell you it might be Stephen Kings best written book, not my favorite, but definitely up there! It was such an engrossing story from the start. i like the movie, but the book is so much better, because as you said, the most horrific thing is the transformation of arnie. its not as good in the movie. also the car doesnt just repair itself, but leeches his energy, when he pushes her in circles to "repair" it.
