"Who Wants to Live Forever?" should have been playing the entire scene.
Or "Bonny Portmore" as in Highlander 3.

Somebody is sore
I cried when this happened. I love Connor and I loved Duncan. Only Connor would give Duncan this. He chose to let Duncan be the one to end him. They loved each other like brothers. 😢
In the End, there can be only ONE.
@tiagobaenre5973 I mean, it obviously wasn't unescapable. Kell blocks it easily later in the movie. The thing is Connor wasn't really trying in this fight. He was sort of pantomiming sword moves but his full intention was the let Duncan win the fight.
I remember sobbing in the movie theater watching this
My wife stills teases me to this day....😢
@@neilis2405 However Kell used a 2nd blade to block the attack. So i'd say the technique is unblockable with one blade in this fictive world.
You'd think that Connor's quickening would be longer and cooler looking that a standard no body kill.
It's not the size of the quickening that counts... It's how you use it...
They spent the budget on glass to explode during Kell's quickening.
exactly OP. Connor's was so pathetic.
What has always gotten me-when Connor says “One of us has to die now”. The resignation in his voice, the finality- Connor was ready to go. Weary in body and soul. Everyone he had loved save Duncan gone to either mortal death or immortal vengeance. He had lived and loved and lost, many times over. At the end, he wanted to stop Kell, give Duncan the chance to do it, and peace at last. At a point in everyone’s life, I think everyone thinks they’ve seen it all, that they’re just tired and worn out. And they think about an end to it all. Connor went out a hero and a true Highlander. His clan and Ramirez would have been proud
That montage of Connor's life was amazing. Such a hero knows how to win, the art of living, as well as how to lose, the art of dying!
Aye, that he did. He lived and died the Highland way. With truth in voice, love in his heart, and sword in hand.
My grandma who passed decades ago told me she was ready to go. She watched her son pass two of her grandchildren and her husband along with god knows how many others of family and friends. It broke my heart and i couldnt understand it for the longest time. Now with me being 50 having lost many friends and fur babies as i only had one child he is grown and hasnt given me any grandchildren yet i know what she felt now. As i grow older and have more health issues i can easily see that by the time i reach my 80s if i am able to that i will be ready to go unless something changes dramatically that sparks a new interest in staying.
Gr8 way to put it...I agree.
Well said Good Sir!
I had "who wants to live forever?(when love must die)" playing in my head while watching this. It was clear why connor wanted to die. He'd had enough.
he had lost so much over the centuries he was tired of losing everything he held dear over the centuries
There can be only one…Lord Raiden.

I saw this with my dad because he’s a big fan and loved the show back in the day. This scene broke his heart because he loved Conner while I loved his cousin because I loved the series. Conner got his proper send off.
Duncan need the power of connor and fuse with him to become enough stronger to beat jacob kell the true villain. For me it s a good story. Like in dragon ball z cell need the two android 17 and 18 to be perfect.
@@stryder33 or like Nail getting Piccolo to fuse with him to fight Frieza. He knew that Frieza had to be stopped. He knew how powerful Frieza was and knew it would give Piccolo the boost to easily handle him. Too bad he didn’t know that was merely the first of many forms that got more powerful with each transformation.
It’s CONNOR.
@@Omni-Rage absolutely
@@stryder33 it's actually dumb as hell plot. It was never about kill count each Immortal had, but the raw skills they possessed. Kurgan killed more immortals than Ramirez, but was almost killed by him (few inches deeper cut and he would be done with). Some immortals honed their skills, even if only trough fighting each other, others truly trained and others didn't. As seen in Highlander, some immortals simply chilled trough their life and others, like Kurgan, were hunting others.
before I even clicked on this i heard Duncan say "I love you"...I AM crying.
I cried like a baby during this scene…. I felt the Pain / love and memories between Teacher and Student…..
I loved the show. I dont remember this at all. Maybe i blocked it out lol. It made me actually cry. Not only losing Connor but having Duncan do it. But it was seeing his memories of his long dead wife and his spirit seeming to go back to Scotland to her. I lost my wife a few years back and it brought those emotions up. Wish I could be with her. When we first met the first movie she rented for us was Highlander. It was late 1987 and Id not seen it then. Was amazing. Miss ya love.
@@syckles I mean...this was recycled from 2 stories in the TV show. There was a time when Mythos tried to convince duncan to kill him because duncan needs his quickening to defeat the big bad of the season. Then the killing of a friend when he took out Richie
@@nightwingaven69 I loved the show and the movies. I preferred Duncan to Connor and you correct. Now that I think of it, Duncan was forced to kill friends or former friends quite often.
@@michaelpenirelli9003 the series showed the immortals as a small but well-traveled group, barring some exceptions. I guess being able to sense each other contributed to that.
The series explored many things the movie was too short for. Mental disease and hopelessness were common themes in the series, where friends became enemies.
@@vensheaalara that's what made it so good. I am not saying it didn't have it's cheesy moments but, in my opinion, far more great and interesting ones. I think it did a great job at showing the "good guys" either weren't always good or can be gradually shaken to their core over time.
A lot of people are too young to know this but, Highlander the first movie came out in 1986, then 1991 came Highlander: the quickening, 1994 the sorcerer, and this movie was 2000, they made a couple more and of course had the t.v series. I'd say go and find the first movie and start from the beginning to get the whole story because just watching the t.v series doesn't tell the whole story
I identified with Duncan more as I liked how the series allowed us to delve into the character/universe more deeply but this was still sad.
Yup. Viewers & readers have to suffer for, fear for, and pity the protagonist, and we had much more of that with Duncan than we did with Connor.
@@thelionsshare6668 Upon reflection, 6 seasons is a lot but I was still sad when that ended as well! While it will never be considered a cinematic masterpiece, I appreciated the closure Endgame was able to provide.
That was the intent of the writers. They had decided to get back to telling how much of a tragedy Immortality is.
For me, the first episode of the Highlander saga is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in my life. This quest for immortality after which all humanity runs. We will probably get there one day. But I also never forgot Beatie Edney who played the role of Heather in the very first film of the Highlander saga. This brings us back to more basic emotions but so intense too...
This tragic scene made me shed a few tears the first time I saw it. Connor was tired and ready to go. It was only fitting that Duncan absorbed Connor's power. Damned if I didn't choke up again when Duncan said "I love you, Connor..." There can be only one.
something about Duncans face reminds me of my own younger brother. I think its the eyes / eyebrows. Yea this tears me up too
Likewise, I'm tearing up all over again.
Loved Highlander I and Highlander Endgame. This scene was heart ❤️ wrenching 😢
Two men forced to fight to the death, by a nature and a destiny they did not choose but could avoid. What a great story line.
more or less the story of any war in the world
Highlander was by far my favourite silly nerd franchise when I was a teen. I'd come home from school for lunch and watch the TV show while eating. I wouldn't miss it, not even on 9/11 - while everyone else was glued to the news I was probably the only one tuned in to the Highlander rerun on whatever channel it was on (Space? can't remember).
Ahhh Space.
Your canuck roots are showing.😉
Such an emotional moment, a great goodbye to a legendary character and a brilliant movie.
The giant glowing JVC sign in the background really made it.
Can someone explain why they use katanas? Both. That actually makes zero sense. Highlander with katana instead claymore, why?
@@nick3175 Connor Macleod was given the katana by Ramirez his teacher who himself received the katana from Masamune the master samurai swordsmith after he was married to his daughter. Connor received his katana fro Hideo Koto a samurai he befriended when he was shipwrecked in Japan.
@@aaronbarlow4376 Thank you. Still does not make sense, as claymore is better sword than katana, and Connor learn to fight with it initially. Yes, modern katanas, made from good steel are comparable with European long swords, but medieval katanas were inferior. Although kenjutsu makes more sense for a movie with its wide and safer moves - it is created for demonstrations and training, not like kendo for real fight. There is not equivalent of kenjutsu in Europe. Still two white dudes with katanas looks ridiculous to me.
@@nick3175 Medieaval katanas were unsurpassed of made by masters like Masamune, the metal folded many times to create a fibrous strength. Perhaps Damascus and to a greater extent Toledo blades were even better. European longswords although good fall short.
As far as fighting, European style has the wider and safer moves as the blades were heavier and utilise more of a chopping action with the straight blade, katanas were a curved cutting weapon and a lighter blade and utilised quicker more precise movements, especially against unarmoured opponents. So more flowing, circular movements to allow the single edge to cut, you're right, it looks better cinematically. Although the Kurgan's big Euro straight broadsword made for some cool power strikes and suited the Russian giant.
I am partial to the series with Duncan, having grown up with it, but this scene with Conner is well acted. Well done.
The fact that Christopher lambert is practically blind and does all his own stunts/fighting scenes makes me love him more.

It's Connor,not Conner.
This was actually the 4th movie and it was to show that Duncan was the Highlander ending the movies and series forever
What I find interesting about tales of immortality is when you contrast Connors end here with our desperate need to survive, to live, and for many of us our absolute dread of dying. And yet here we have a soul that's been put through the wringer for hundreds of years. He's lost so much that to him, death is a blessing. It's such an eye opener in terms of the contrast to the way the everyman thinks and in a way, the concept is almost alien to us. One has to do a lot of soul searching and growth in order to reach this kind of acceptance and to be able to set the terror of death aside and accept it with open arms.
I don't think "the everyman" fears death as much as you seem too. While I can say most people aren't in a rush to die, plenty are in fact scared but I have never met anyone terrified of death. Not to say they don't exist but I can say I have met plenty of folks who are ready for it/accepting of it. Its the natural order of things, no need to fear the void 🙂
@@bigeric1982 Immortality would be great if I could share it with my loved ones.
Connor knew Duncan was the one that needed to survive and gain strength from his experience with the Kurgen and how he gained strength from killing Ramirez. That forced Connor into "hiding" so to speak for centuries.
I would have expected that connor's quickening would have been a lot more intense
that's what low budgets do
Yo be fair, Connor was "burned out." 🤠
Perhaps this was Highlander: Multiverse of Madness instead of EndGame
This movie presumes that the original Highlander never happened. In that regard, while Duncan has less kills than Conner, Duncan has bigger kills. He's taken one of the Horsemen (Methos got the other two, stealing the quickening of Kronos), many immortals significantly older and far more active than Conner was over the centuries (tv series had him knocking down Immortal serial killers every week), and because of the concept that the original movie obviously isn't part of the history of this film there was no Kergan for Conner either. At the end of the day Conner is really a middle of the road Immortal of approximately 800 years or so. His quickening would be on par with or slightly bigger than what we could expect of Amanda or any of the other Immortals who largely minded their own business over the centuries compared to the ones that hunted those or the ones like Duncan who had a nasty habit of taking the heads of those same hunting Immortals. Duncan is really, really powered up for an Immortal of his age.
@John Owen
DM did pull off many upsets where he was clearly the underdog against much older and more powerful immortals. It does make sense he would be unaware of Kell was breaking so many rules for so long, but that so many immortals fell to him without even a less-active, "good" immortal aware of a single immortal claiming nearly 700, was tough to get around. It's much more difficult to believe the evil immortals ally themselves to stop a growing threat and seize a nice power boost for themselves.
It was so sad to see Conor give himself up. He was always so strong
That's exactly why he did it.
he was tired of all; constant losing loved one, dying and resurrecting cycle was vicious. on top of that , as he said; one of them had to die to defeat Kell...
@@ApocGuy he can defeat kell alone... just to keep in mind what ramirez say to him if he is alive
I would have liked to have seen Ramirez and the child he saved during ww2 deleted scene in the flashbacks.
Duncan would have been an interesting Bond.
a french james bond would really be interesting
Christopher Lambert was great in the movies, but honestly, I really like Adrian Paul's character more. We really got to know him in the tv series, and I think it's fitting that he ended up being the last Immortal.
Also, I got the feeling the Connor was tired of living, so he got to save Duncan, and put a end to things at the same time.
couldnt agree more , for me i always had more of a soft spot for duncan than conor
He wasn’t the last Faith survived and I’m guessing there were more immorals and pre immortals out there Kal was just one of the stronger ones but looking at just being alive for 5000 years I’m guessing mythos had a count that matched it or exceeded it, but ya Connor wanted to die it’s why he put himself in sanctuary and when he know there was no place to remove him self to that would keep the world safe he had his student the uncorrectable Duncan take his head and power
Agreed! Duncan just loved to live. Connor just kinda got fed up eventually. Some people are just like that, like Duncan. I think depression just wore Connor down
I try to view the first movie as a separate entity to everything that came after...
If you believe this, do NOT watch Highlander: The Source. That movie single-handedly turned the franchise on its head with one of the more shocking plot twists. Because of that movie, there can be no other Highlander movies or series as we know them
God this movie was so stupid.. the fact that Connor would feel so bad killing the main baddies dad just because he was a priest... said fanatical priest burned his mother alive at the stake and tried to kill him as well. There was absolutely nothing to be distraught or ashamed about.
I cried my eyes out in the theater when Duncan killed Connor. I cried just as much just watching this clip. ❤️

No matter what everybody's comments is I could still remember the regional highlander movies and this actually put A tear in my eye cause.I can remember this movie long and this was a special scene for the whole highlander series
Great series. So underrated.
I get why they killed off Connor (Lambert has visibly aged a lot and this was before de-aging CGI was good) but this was still the moment I checked out of the franchise for good. Duncan was a great character but it just wasn't the same knowing they'd killed off Connor.
It's ok. They didn't do anything after endgame.

It's the only thing missing in an otherwise perfect ending for Connor.
0:25 Magnífica escena para la posteridad. Duncan podía ser más hábil y ágil, pero Connor tenía un as bajo la manga con ese movimiento que le enseñó a Duncan en Italia.
These kinds of moments are very powerful.
"There can only be one , let it be Duncan MacLeod the Highlander"
This never happened, because Connor killed the Kurgan during the Gathering when there were only four immortals left. Thankfully so.
The series negated that. Hell, Highlander 3 (shudders) negated that. In the series they even referenced Conner killing the Kurgan more than once and then they played it off like "yeah, it was a huge battle, but.. oh yeah there were more immortals".
Enough of the "first movie only" crap.
This movie had some good moments and its literal LEAGUES better than the source which was god AWFUL.
to wach i order 132 then endgame
This never happened because this is fake.
This was so unfair to Duncan. After being tricked into killing Richie a few years prior, no way he didnt have PTSD.
I thought that Connor was the last one in the original movie. I never understood how there suddenly came to be a whole bunch more for a TV series.
The only way to even begin to tie the movies and show together coherently is to ignore the end of the first movie, and ignore the second movie entirely. Basically, Kurgan was a dick, Connor killed him, the world moved on.
Strange. Destroying the continuity of "the canon" is stupid and insults the intelligence of the viewer. It is like putting salt in a package labeled as "sugar" on a shelf, selling it that way and then expecting people not to complain. Story plots are a purchased product, as well.
Yet the series was far better than even the original movie. IT wasn't "salt" it was "grade A sugar" to use your analogy.
He won twice just not in this universe I guess.
That is a matter of opinion. However the issue is false labeling of the contents of a product.
Now that i think about it in the last movie "THE SOURCE" when Duncan sword got broken it would have been epic if he had busted out Conor's sword, but he didn't just another reminder how disappointing that movie was.
Connor wanted to die. But he really didn't need to. There was so much more to be done. So much more for him to live for. I suffered through so many bad movies but still had love for the franchise until this moment. This was when I cracked and decided to walk away.
I think I would have been the same had it not been for bad sequel movies before this one. Highlander 2 was just painful for me. The series is really what kept me vested. As it stands the original Highlander movie and the series are all I prefer to watch. I get what you are saying though.
@@michaelpenirelli9003 I get you as well. I actually stumbled upon Season 1 of the TV series BEFORE watching the first Highlander movie. I was very excited for this movie as well. I just left with mixed feelings unfortunately.
As much as I hate to say it. They did Conner well. They gave Conner a proper send off, one he earned and deserved. And if you think about it, most TV Shows/Movies would not care about giving the one who started it a real ending. The first film was what I hoped all the films would be. The second, FFS.... but yeah it was hard to see Conner go. But how he went was with honor, and by someone who he loved, and who loved him.
@@djdime2002 They did do Connor right. I movie is meh for me but one of the saving graces was Connor and Duncan. I think I would have hated it if Connor was killed by someone else. I hated seeing Conor die, but I am glad it was Duncan and it was noble and with honor. Hell even the montage scene and music was great. It was definitely done well, at least in my opinion.
Unfortunately, Christopher Lambert was aging out of the ability to play an ageless character. Knowing that, this was a fantastic sendoff for his character.
They killed the whole series with this episode
"Remember Duncan. In the end, there can be only one." That should have been the last thing Connor said to Duncan.
I KNOW, RIGHT? What the hell were they thinking?
This really shows how much of a superior swordsman Connor is to Duncan. As per Connor's own lesson: "it's about the manipulation of the mind, as well as the body". Connor basically manipulated Duncan into killing him because he knew he would not have been in the right head space to kill the immortal who is coming after them.
Excellent job Connor 👏 👏👏👏
Actually he is not. Duncan has taken way more heads
@@mrmushin1 according to what they showed in the movie, Duncan had 174 confirmed immortal kills while Connor had 262 confirmed immortal kills. 😅 So yeah, Connor has more Quickenings than Duncan has.

Highlander is proof that sometimes, sequels should just not be made.

All wrong.
And this moment broke my heart. It was a good reason to make a sequel. I don’t recall that the rest lived up to this promise. But I think that’s about their very poorly-defined mythology.

if they reboot this, it will be a raceswapped, gender swapped main character who somehow can beat The kurgan hand to hand
They also need to address how, in the increasingly big brother centric modern world, Immortals could manage to go unnoticed by the government and other documentation heavy entities.
There's a secret organization of mortals that keep tabs on the immortals similar to under world 2 they even ambush them with guns it was either the TV series or a TV movie

Connor won the Prize like 3 times...Duncan must have had the biggest power boost ever.
They screwed this up so bad..Had they reversed the roles and Duncan died, it would;d have brought everything together in the story line and why Duncan was not at the finale fight and Duncan would have died the honorable and unselfish death of sacrificing himself , just as in his character as a in the series...
I do agree, but conner knew he had lost the will to live when Jacob killed Rachel. He lost the last person he was living for. He knew duncan could if he was stronger and more focused. He gave his life for his brother.
Plus Adrian Paul was younger so they probably felt he'd have movies ahead.
Guys guys you didn't watch the series and original movie obviously.
This is not the same character. Connor McLeod is good guy he was happy with his wife and later with Brenda and is the last immortal. And the most powerful immortal too. In the series he is the same. Friend of Duncan. Good guy he smiles there's no Kell all of his loved people are alive. Here is different character:
I could say evil, he can't fight everyone beats him. And they say that in 1990 he left the game his daughter was killed. But in the series he meet with Duncan 1992 and nobody is killed he is in the game. Duncan never was married too. I ll say same actors same names but different characters.
@@ricardodavidson326 Yea........no. These characters are Duncan and Connor from the original movies and the series. Not sure what you're trying to say but you're all kinds of incorrect. If you're trying to say its a different storyline, thats possible but these are those characters.
@@picallo1 He is trying to say that the story doesn't make sense and looks more like an alternate timeline. This is what happens when you don't keep a coherent story. But they always paint themselves in a corner.
The Queen songs really captured this heart of these movies and TV series.
Best part about this fight is the fact that they both wear glasses in real life.
I feel like Lambert used a body double during the fight.
I mean probably,…Christopher Lambert was going blind and it became an issue with the fight choreography in the later films.
I saw this movie in the theater, and I hated it. There never should have been a Highlander sequel in the first place; and every sequel undid the original story, and made Connor's quest for the Prize and victory over the Kurgan a tragic joke. That's not to say that I disliked Duncan or the TV show, which were good, but my sentiment still stands. By the time they film Endgame, Lambert is visibly older and slower, and didn't fit the role so well anymore (not to mention the awful haircut). But the deconstruction of Connor in this film is like unto the treatment of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. It was like watching a friend die of cancer, and feeling that awful sense of relief that the suffering is finally over. He deserved better.
And the reasoning for it in the story made NO sense! So, forgettable Bad Guy has X amount of kills, and Duncan and Connor each had around half that number. By the movie's logic, Duncan taking Connor's Quickening now gives him more kills than the Bad Guy, even he only added ONE kill to his tally. BUT, if it's the quality of kills that matter, then bringing up the number was pointless. After all, if Bad Guy spent the last three centuries un-aliving all his low-ranking henchmen, along with every Ritchie Ryan he came across, noobs with no accumulated power, experience, or skill, then his total accumulated power should not be that great. When Fitzcairn was abducted by the evil Watchers who were going to take his head, his worry was that his Quickening would be wasted- all his power and experience gone, just POOF. That means that his power upon release should be much greater than someone like Ritchie. Meanwhile, the Clan MacLeod has been taking on every high-ranking evil Immortal they've come across for centuries, so much so that Connor has a case of "Dark Quickening" at one point. BUt no, the story treats it like a 2nd grade math problem, and they stuck with it, and it was stupid and pointless.
But I guess it was still better than :The Source...
1:22 , 2:36 I completely understand why Connor wanted to die. He hadn’t had the longest immortal life, but he was tired of being immortal and watching his loved ones die. Much like Duncan was in The Source, Connor had seen enough and just wanted to be at peace. I’m sad that he dies here, but I don’t blame him one bit. I’m positive that if I saw even half of what he did, I’d feel the same way.
I never seen this episode before. I wonder where can I get a copy. Such a great set of movies and TV series.
Duncan was always the bettrer swordsman, but Connor had the clearer perspective. It took ages for me to see it. Im glad Duncan stuck to his morality and convictions, he was given no choice. It's not really a noble sacrifice that Connor made but I feel for Duncan all the same.
I loved the movies and the series great writing I’d like to see this rebooted or a new generation of immortals
One is in the works with Henry Cavill attached
Adrian's acting in this scene is fantastic
As much as I love the Highlander franchise, it's always bugged me that nobody seemed to care about continuity. Each film is just a standalone adventure that happens to feature an immortal guy named MacLeod and the overall lore but they do not fit together otherwise. This entry is a direct sequel to the TV series which again has its own distinct timeline from any of the movies prior to this one
I grieved after the death of Connor Macleod.
I feel so sorry for the maintenance man of that building.
