- This piece is inspired by the works of Steve Reich and William Basinski who both use the technique of having tape loops of different lengths drift in and out of phase with each other.
The idea was to make sure that all the sounds came from the same short loop and that the different length loops would be created live using 2 channels of an unsynced looper pedal.
To do this I ran a 5 second tape loop into the TC Electronics Ditto X4 looper via the Old Blood Noise Endeavours AB/Y pedal. This meant I could record the first loop just on the left channel and then switch when recording the second loop to be just on the right channel. I also made sure the second loop was slightly longer than the first so that over the course of 4 minutes, the loops slowly become out of phase with each other before coming full circle and becoming in sync again.
The ambience was then created live using the fantastic Glaciers script by dwtong (itself based off the super fun Paulstrech plugin) on the Norns. Glaciers is capable of recording up to 4 separate samples and time stretching them to the extreme (here I stretch them to 25%, 50% and 100% their original length!)
Be good to one another,

Lovely.
Thanks for listening!
Excellent.
Thanks for listening!
love the ghostly sounds hidden in the back
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
very intersting, have to check out glacier in the future ;D
Yeah definitely recommend having a play around with it, I used to love the paulstretch plugin so was super excited when I saw that someone had recreated it on the Norns!
Could listen to this all day 🤍
Thanks for listening! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wow! Beyond word, mate! This is so freaking beautiful😮
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks! ☺️
Exceptional work 🤘
Thanks so much! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This super lovely dude, bravo 🖤
Thank you 🙌
Such a moody sounding piece. Good stuff.
I think I need to try this out. I don’t have any of these devices, but maybe I can kluge some stuff together with my existing setup and some looping help in Logic Pro.
Yeah I definitely recommend giving it a try, it can be super fun! And you definitely don’t need all the gear, can easily be done just using Logic and any sample, just use 2 tracks, 1 panned left and one panned right and put the same sample on both tracks, slightly trim one of the samples then loop them! Hope you enjoy! 😁
what cassette player are you using?
It’s just one of the cheap personal cassette players you can pick up from Amazon, think it cost about £15 🙂
