- In this video, you will learn how to set up your older Cricut Legacy Machines including the Cricut Personal, Cricut Expression, Cricut Cake and Cricut Create with Sure Cuts a Lot 5 and a third party plugin called Libcutter. It used to be that only Sure Cuts a Lot 2 worked with these machines. That is no longer the case. Follow these simple steps and you will be able to use SCAL5 with all of its new features. Enjoy!

If I go over the 1.34 firmware will I still be able to cute with SCAL on my personal cutter?
Just did this with a thrift find Expression and SCAL 6. I used the Cricut download link and libcutter installer link provided. Works like a charm! Now I just have to see about getting blades and mats! 😂

@@abihamajid5126 it works well for me. I installed the Cricut Design software from the link provided in the description, then the SCAL 6 trial. Unchecked the box at the end of the SCAL 6 install, then did the firmware update in Cricut Design Studio as shown in the video. Closed Cricut Design and installed the plugin from the link provided. Finally, open SCAL 6 and configure the cutter as shown in the video. It took a bit of adjusting font sizes and getting used to SCAL, but everything works and looks good! I honestly can’t tell a quality difference between the SCAL output and what I can get with the cartridge I found.

I kept on thinking that I was going to have to buy a new machine until I decided to search if there was a way to use SVG files on the Expression. That inquiry led me to your video. Thanks.... I have a Cricut Expression 1 since 2008, brand new, never use it. I just want to start sewing baby shower gifts and did some reasearh and found out that this machine will be very useful. Also wanted to be part of this new business options. Got sad, knowing that this model was not compatible to Cricut Space. I found your video. I followed all the steps and ....... Iit works. I've just followed this guide and got my Cricut Personal working with SCAL 5. So pleased I found this video. Thank you. Just purchased SCAL 5 as its a cracking bit of software that's saved me hundreds of pounds buying a new cutter when my old one does everything I need.
I am trying to run this on my cricut personal cutter but somehow it does not cut correct. If i try to cut any fonts from scal 5 it cuts only here and there and leaves me with a headache. Does yours cut perfectly using scal5? When i use the cartridge fonts it cuts perfect only Scal 5 that gives problem

I picked up a Cricut Create from Goodwill for $15. No carts, books, or anything! Just the plugs. The firmware is 1.54. Looked for any information online about it and found your video. Tried SCAL 6, libcutter, and did a demo cut and it worked! I'll purchase soon thru ur link!! TYSM!!

Glad I found your video!!! I was recently gifted my first Cricut. I have LOTS of questions. It's the Expression. I know it an older machine. 1. Once I successfully follow the steps in this video, do I absolutely have to purchase cartridges or can I create designs and/or download all the images I need/want via my laptop??? 2. If I have to purchase cartridges, where is the best place to do so? 3. Suggestions on best cartridges or sights for downloads. (Right now I am mainly interested in printing t-shirts and creating decals for mugs).
Suggestions from anyone would be appreciated and helpful 🙂.
I’m glad you found this helpful! If you want to be able to cut any image from the internet, you will need to purchase the full version on Sure cuts a lot 5. You only need 1 cricut cartridge ( it needs to be inserted at all times when using the Scal5 software. It does not matter which cartridge it is. I recommend Facebook market or eBay for purchasing cartridges.

As I said before, this video shows how those with legacy cricut machines can use SCA however you do need to purchase the license as it will cut lines across your designs in the trial mode. I am extremely happy with it....

This is a great video. I would suggest you add an update to your post, telling people how to update the usb driver and where they will need to do that. I struggled for hours with my circuit expressions and didn’t remember how to do this. I think it would save others a lot of grief. Thanks again.

I have a personal in awesome shape that I got for a song because Provo (please don’t sue me! 😁) bricked them knowing there was a way. I’m looking to do stencils and transfers for skateboard graphics and clothing so I can have unique art on a $20 board. I’m going to start working on it tomorrow. 👍

Hi thanks for this video. The step by step is very helpful. I got the sure cuts a lot 5 downloaded and the libcutter as well. I see that the scal will only work in demo mode for 15 days. I also see online a SCAL version 2. I have the first cricut and wanted to know if that will work with this cricutso I can use it past the 15 days. I just bought this machine to see if I was interested enough to buy a newer model. I hope I can play with it a bit because I don't want to buy cartridges for it. thanks for any help

Uninstall the program and reinstall it. Enter your serial # and it should work.

Yes it is a lil pricey but if you upgrade to a newer cricut machine you can still use it to design and transfer and cut in design space.

I have the Expression and was so disappointed when I couldn't get computer based program to work on it because it was an older machine and I hated to spend $$$ on an updated one. I will try this tonight to see it it will work.

Thank you for the tutorial. It worked like a charm, but I'm having an issue with my blade cutting along the movement line on some of my more complex designs. I tried cutting a butterfly box, but about 2/3 of the way through it, my blade seemingly failed to retract and cut diagonally across about a third of my design. Frantic Google searches would appear to indicate that it's a memory issue and a result of sending lots of data over USB. Do you have a workaround for this?
Perhaps update/uninstall and reinstall your usb drive on your computer. Hope it helps.
I got my Cricut Expression 2 as a Christmas gift from bubbie a few years ago. Did not had much time to use it at the time but had been investing on cartridges, tools, pens, etc.
Now that I am retired and would love to use the machine, the software can not be updated. I am devastated! I thougt I could at least use the cartridges!
I called Design Space rep and was told that they can't do anything but would give me a discount on a new one. Mine is new, still have the box and only used 5 or 6 times! I don't trust Provo Craft anymore.
I've been frantic reading every post or comments just in case somebody finds a miracle.
Sorry for my venting...I am very upset .
Unfortunately as far as I know, there is no way to make the expression 2 work with this software. Sorry.

“Cricut expression” should work fine.

If your having issues with the usb not being found, update your usb driver and try again. Many have tried this and it has worked for them.

Hello, I love this tutorial! Can you help me with a problem I'm having?☹ I followed everything you did but for some reason my cricut is cutting 2 straight lines in the middle of every cut I do, how do I remove that??
The 2 lines are because the download is a trial. When you purchase the software the lines will no longer appear.
it worked like a charm, but i think its its not the paid version- they score a line through the cuts. Is there any way around that? do you have an old serial laying around?

This is really helpful but my designs are cutting off center. Every time I cut with SCAL it seems to start the cut in a random place. How do I make it start the cut in the same place every time for the same design?

No need to buy it twice. Just make sure the firmware is up to date on both machines and make sure your able to cut with the trial on both before you buy the full version of the software.

Hello, Sweet Craftylicious! I am so thankful for this video, I was able to install everything and get it working on my PC, but on second thought would love to have this available on my MacBook to create on the go. I've uploaded everything which seemed to work as you showed, but when I go to cut it freezes and my Cricut expression does not respond. Do you have any suggestions?

Did you download the Mac version of the trial? I’m not sure what would cause that. I do however know that if you buy the windows version of Scal5 it can’t be used interchangeably on a Mac. It has to be a special license that costs a little more. Check with the Craftedge customer service , their contact info is on their website.

I wanted to give you an update. I updated some things on my Mac, cleaned it out and and re-downloaded the SCAL 5 (this time the Mac version) and the lib cutter extension! It worked! I'm gonna be able to travel with my laptop and my expression! Thank you so much for your video!!!! I'm soooo excited!

I can't get the design studio to open! I have tried everything! This video finally gave me hope for my Expression machine. The message reads "the application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. try obtaining a new installer file from application author" Any ideas? I have tired uninstalling and everything.
I believe Cricut recently removed the download. It is sad because so many people have the older cricut machines. I will try to see if there’s a different way to get the download.

I read on another forum that you have to add a keys.h file. I noticed your video didn't mention it. Is that something that is automatically added in scal5?

is there any third party software (or anything in general) that would work with the expression 2?! I got this machine a couple months ago and wanted to get into using it but I feel like its just a brick at this point 😥 and I dont have $100+ for the newer stuff.
Unfortunately I don’t know of any software that is currently compatible with the expression 2. You can however use cricut cartridges, search your local marketplace for them.

You shouldn’t have any issues if you connect it as needed.

can you tell me why my cutter did not cut in the same location as how it showed on the preview in SCAL. SCAL showed that the image was going to start cutting in portrait mode in the upper left hand corner, but when I clicked "cut", it actually cut on the bottom right of the mat. thank you, the video is great!

so exciting that I am now able to use my expression. Is it a good idea to activate the Cricut Design Studio? This is the second video I've watched & both said to do trial run. Not sure what that all includes except all the Cricut cartridges that are out there
The software is no longer supported by cricut and doesn’t work to my knowledge. It’s simply used to update the firmware if needed. If you purchase Scal 5, you’ll be able to design and cut any image you want.
Dusting off my cricut cake to use as a regular cricut. Which machine should I chose since it wasn't an option in the update options.

I have a Cricut Cake v2.43, your tutorial lists compatibility with V1.54-2.34. Does this mean my Cricut is too 'new'?
No, i believe the 2.43 should work fine.
@@sweetcraftylicious Thanks for the reply! I skipped the firmware update and followed the remainder of your instructions but my cricut didn't do anything when I tried a test cut. I was able to successfully select my cricut cutter after installing the libcutter plugin but my test cut wouldn't work. I thought the problem was my cricut version wasn't compatible (like the expression 2) and gave up.
I'm no longer able to continue troubleshooting because my Sure Cuts A Lot trial version has expired :/ I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but still receive the error. Am I correct in thinking my options are to purchase the software and hope I can get it to work or try the test on a different computer?

I've been trying to continue however I have an issue related to USB drivers so my computer does not recognized the cricut. I have the CD however my computer does not have the disc reader, do you have something for that to help me?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your usb driver.
My cricut is not discovered by usb i upated the usb drivers but nothing even yried to update thru ports any tips? Cable is good and i get the chimes that its connected
I would uninstall and reinstall the usb drivers. Hopefully that helps.

It will cut 2 lines because you downloaded a trial. When you purchase the software, the lines will disappear.

Purchase the regular Scal 5. It does support windows 10. Just make sure it works with the trial download before you purchase the software.

Hi, I just bought a Cricut Expressions, it is on v2.35. Will updating the firmware automatically bring it to 2.43? The program was able to register the data but not cut so I am wondering if the firmware is the final key
Yes firmware needs to updated.

Correction:
The Cricut worked on smaller cuts, but the software would freeze part way through the job with larger cuts. I discovered I didn't complete the firmware download the first time through. I didn't notice it required 2 updates in succession. After reading and following the instructions in Cricket Design Studio, I now have firmware V1.34 and the freeze problem is gone.
