Worked offshore for a long time. The rig decommission is not Govt related, its all about the $$$. The owners spend a lot of money maintain them and if they are not making money they are sold for scrap. They are sunk for rigs if it costs more to scrap them and the government approves of creating a reef. That rig is a floating jack up drilling rig, so they literally lower it down into the gulf, the top part floats and they tow it to a scrap yard. Easy peasy for some scrap money

As I understand it the lease requirements the origional oil company would have agreed to would require that they are removed a certain number of years after they becomes inactive. Some of the platforms change company hands which delayed the inevitable removal on to the final lease holder (me speculating). The lease area is supposed to be returned to the original condition. During the removal process it is possible for some subsurface material to be left but they do followup surveys to ensure the lease agreement is followed. There is rigs to reef being done but the real push should be for artificial reef zones that will be off limits to commercial fishing. I don't have a ton of experience but I have been working since July 2022 in Texas as a platform removal observer.

That nephloid layer on bottom is like a fog bank with often zero vis. Big fish hide down there. Where are the red snapper? When you find a clear bottom and have a scuba tank, you can fill a mesh sack with big flounder. They’re dumb and all you need is a pole spear. No fancy spear gun needed. There are also rare shells on those pilings, usually 100 feet down.

African pompano are mighty rare off Texas and I’ve only seen one caught. I Spearfished out there for 17 years but mostly in green water, not blue. The deepest water was 900 feet out there at the tequila and Cerveza Rigs. The fish were caiman I saw groupers out there I’ve never seen anywhere else. The triggerfish were 6-8 pounds and would bump your mask. We weighed one of them. Spiny oysters were everywhere and I filled a sack with them.

so, in the oilfield. A "rig" is, like you describe, a temporary structure that is moved off the site after drilling is complete -- think like a few months. A permanent structure that is in place for years, with jacket legs, like you typically spearfish, is actually a "platform". It's always aggravated me to hear you call them "rigs", but I never said anything. But now, with a jack-up rig in the background, I just gotta call it out. You almost always are actually diving production platforms. sorry to derail -- carry on :)

Pulling decommissioned rigs out of an area is a GOOD thing. That means they're putting those rigs back to work, drilling more wells. That has to happen so they can build new production platforms to put over those newly drilled wells. Platforms are long term structure for sea life. Price of oil has been low for several years, and it went up this year and is staying up -- seems reasonable that oil companies want to start hiring rigs again and drilling wells.

Some say it’s the shrimp on the bottom (we have a ton of Gulf shrimp)
I also hear it’s the crustaceans eating on the barnacles on the bottom.. maybe it’s a combination. Nevertheless I know it has something to do with the rigs as the crackling is much more prominent than in open water.

There are basic rules to follow for a reason. Get trained by a vetted agency, get certified. You were ONE mishap away from a single or dual fatality or severe injury. It was really fucking dangerous.
You clearly enjoy diving, so why not get properly trained? It's fucking awesome, I promise you.
To reiterate, not here to rag on you or try to act superior like a total idiot - it's just that I've seen enough divers die because they exceed the limits and don't follow the basic rules/get trained. Lost more than one friend due to that stuff. This is 100% out of concern for your and your buddy's safety.

Mechanical Engineering is a great way of doing things in a very specific manner that you can easily do with a mechanical engineering program and you can get a degree in mechanical engineering in the same way you can get an internship in the same industry as an engineer or a software engineer or a mechanical engineer or even a computer engineer or a professional engineer or even an engineer or a professional in a field that you have a job that is very different from what you’re currently working on and you have to do it in a very specific manner that is very difficult to get to and very hard to do and difficult to do to make to be honest and I think it’s a very hard job and I don’t think it’s very hard for you me me you have know 24:17

Here in NJ, artificial reefs are saving recreational fishing

The only way I can see it being a problem is to have the same amount of money in the account as you and I have the same money and the difference is I have the same account and the exact same account so that is what I’m going through and then I have the same number of people who have the exact same number of accounts and I get the exact same exact amount and then we have to make a separate payment so I can make sure I get it right so that he can make sure he gets the money right and that he doesn’t get it back and he can pay it off and I don’t have the same money and I don’t know if he doesn’t know yet but I he doesn’t know have a good day and then I have to pay it back to him and then he can get the money and then he has to do that and I have don’t don’t know what I to get a new one that 21:40

Meltdowns are not the same as a bad habit but it’s not like you are a good person to talk Melodramatic about your life and how you are doing it to your children and to yourself or to yourself or to your children that you have to do it for yourself or your children and your family and friends and your family to make you happy or to yourself and to your family and your friends or family members and friends that are not in the way you are and I don’t know what you are doing to but your at your own risk leave me be and you will do it and I know that and I don’t want it to me and I’m not trying to get you at your age own to me and you at you don’t have to go to your own friends I don’t want to do that is not my own life is your own your own family
