Glacier National Park Travel Guide: One Cloudy Day in the Park

  • Glacier National Park, in Northwest Montana, is stunning with massive mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and wildlife. We got a chance to visit the park in early September and had a fantastic half day of views before the clouds rolled in at noon. Visiting this park is knowing that the weather doesn't always work out, and we made the most of it by still spending a whole day exploring the park to show you what to do even on a cloudy day. Here is what we explored, and we can wait to go back and see some of the spots we missed.

We planned a trip there, years ago at the end of June. We stayed at Rising Sun on east side. The GTS road was still not open, so we had rerouted our trip to get to Missoula, our next destination. Before we left, we decided to go up as far as we could. The ranger at the gate told us the road was opening, in 30 minutes. We killed 30 minutes photographing around St Mary Lake, and then got to be one of the first cars on the road that summer. The Many Glacier area of the park is incredibly beautiful as well!

I visited Montana back in 2015 and it was the best vacation I'd ever experienced. Glacier National Park is so beautiful that it cannot be fully appreciated on a computer screen. I would recommend it as a bucket-list item, you'll be glad you visited.

Loved the stop at the little bridge with the water squeezing thru the rocks ~ reminded me of The Rogue River Gorge. And the hike you wren't planning on going on ~ the trail going thru the greenery and plant life looked amazing! The lights in that lodge are awesome! I'd go hard cider too ;)

My husband and I (and some friends) visited Glacier in August. Since my husband and I were on our motorcycle, we experienced the sights, sounds, and smells of the park more so than if we had been in a car. Weatherwise, we got lucky. We were able to spend a couple of hours at Logan Pass, a stop I highly recommend. The park itself is one of the most stunning I have visited, and I can't wait to go back. Thanks for putting together your excellent video.

If you get a chance to go back, I recommend going on the primitive roads past Polebridge Mercantile. There are a few hidden day trip gems accessible via 4x4 (don’t recommend a newer vehicle), with two being Kintla and Bowman Lakes. Because the roads are more primitive, there are less tourists there, well at least for Kintla. Bowman is more popular of the two and easier to get to. The roads are all one lane, lots of ruts and rocky, but oh so worth it. I also recommend going at the end of May where it’s not full-bloom tourist season. A lot of Going-to-the-Sun road from West Glacier to East Glacier isn’t open yet, Saint Mary’s Lodge isn’t open, but the trails are mostly open with not a lot people on them yet. The bear, moose, sheep are out…we always see them at the end of May, but not when we have went in Oct.

We love Glacier. The hike at Logan Pass is gorgeous if the weather is on your side. We hiked a ways on a trail up there back to a little lake many years ago. Sorry you had so much fog and rain. :’(. Next time!!

We have been fortunate to visit almost every national park at least one time, but Glacier is our favorite and it keeps pulling us back. If health and circumstances allow we hope/plan to return another 2-3 times before our journeys end. There is not a place in the park we do not enjoy. EVERY trail we have taken is great.

    Hello !
We are new friends here .
Very nice video well captured and edited. Will be looking your upload and checking your channel which looks great.
We bumped our nose in August 2018 the park was closed because of forest fire . We were very sad about this ...we were supposed to stay 3 days so we had to change our plan and go to Virginia City and Nevada City before heading to Yellowstone and so on .
We were on a 84 days road trip into the Canadian Rockies and western United States.
    Have a nice week

Y’all HAVE to return to GNP. Hubby and I returned this aug and stayed two weeks in Kalispell. There is so much to do in this area. Y’all HAVE to go to Polebridge when y’all return. Funky little place up at the northwestern entrance to park. Requires a dirt road trek to get there but y’all will be rewarded....the little general store has yummy stuff to eat. The get yourselves up to Bowman Lake to hike the upper side of the lake....don’t forget your bear spray. Costco sells a two pack in Kalispell. Venture down the road and check out the very scenic Flathead lake. Go in August and enjoy the flathead cherries green all along the east side. The little Village of Bigfork is so cute. If y’all need a scenic leg stretcher the Swan rive Trail is just right here in town and leads along a gorge and then a beautiful lake. The National Bison Range is down from the lake and is visit worthy. I do want to really urge y’all, to venture up to the Waterton section of the GNP on the Canadian side. do try and hike the Iceberg Lake trail on the east side. I could go on and on....love yalls channel.☮️❤️🍺🍷

The NW corner of Montana (west of the divide) is known for abundant rain, so no other areas in the Intermountain Region of the West has areas with that type of green terrain.

While visiting East Glacier, we stayed at Glacier Peaks Hotel and Casino. I kid you not that after we had checked in, an Asian guy went up to the front desk and asked the guy where he could find an Indian. The clerk looked at him and said, you are looking at one. The Asian man was looking for a Native American with full headdress. The clerk and us had a good laugh. We just happened to stumble across this hotel on our way to East Glacier. We highly recommend it. The rooms were great and the dining fit our late night travel needs. We were there to visit East Glacier so we can’t speak to the casino aspect of the hotel. Out only regret is that the museum wasn’t open. We would like to go back and see it. That whole area is spectacular. And, yes, I am very grateful to our Native Americans and all the land they preserved that mankind is destroying with overcrowding and the negative side of tourism.
