Sea Year Part 1 (USMMA)

- The moments in this short film are from my time as a deck cadet on the SS Horizon Enterprise, as part of the “sea year” I have to embark upon as a Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). I spent 4 months delivering goods between La-Honolulu-SF, but those 4 months would not have been the same without my sea partner Brandon Cordova, 3rd A/E Matt Jernigan, 3/M Kana Logan, and my good friends Lindsey Grandy and Ruzs Macadangdang.
Growing up in Colorado as a kid, I had always been fascinated by the mythical stories of explorers, pirates, epic adventures into the unknown, etc. Yet, actually going out and facing the unknown- that was hard for me. Overcoming that fear had been a big part of my development growing up, something that I will always thank my father for teaching me at a young age, especially since I was the kid who would be crying hiking up 14’ers, mainly due to the fact that I was scared of what I didn’t know up ahead. I was scared of the unknown. Yet, the dream still remained- I wished to live my life like that out of a story book, to live it to its fullest. Little did I know that those ambitions and imaginative dreams as a kid would lead me to explore the world by ocean, navigating ships the size of skyscrapers, going out into the unknown.
Thank you to everyone that has ever supported me in this journey of mine and continues to do so. It is very hard at times, but that’s life right? The challenge in life is what makes it interesting. All I know is that this adventure we call life is full of many chapters, just got to live it page to page.

My first cadet ship was the SS Horizon Enterprise over 12 years ago. This video is amazing.
Vincent Montoro thank you, and thanks for sharing man, what an incredible history it has! You leave your name under the bunk of the cadet rack too??
@@nickvalentine758 oh shit, did you see my name?
Vincent Montoro honestly can’t remember, but there’s so many names under there now you really have to look to read whose name is who’s
Good vibes.
Only the best! Thank you very much!
My man! This was fantastic. I got an offer to play soccer at USMMA, but am still deciding if I should pursue the academy or not. Well done!
Did you?
This is beautiful.
Thank you so much Kiley! Really tried my best to convey wheat my heart was feeling out there. Still learning film though. Can't wait to try new things with Part 2!
I just got accepted so I'm super interested in learning more
Awesome Video. Just got accepted into KP. Looking forward to this... Was it your first option?
Nick W awesome to hear that man! Congrats. Good luck with plebe year, I’ll see you there as a first classman. Sorry for the late response, been out at sea.
Hell yeah! Wildest time of your life!
Dude this is some of the sweetest videography I have ever seen! Which drone do you use? Would you recommend anything specific? I'd like to do something like this for my sea year. Thanks man!
Thank you man! I used the DJI Mavic Pro 2 and honestly I just recommend you use anything you have, even your phone would work great. good luck!
dope video bro! Did u get to pick where to spend your sea year at USMMA?
Hey thanks! And yes, actually just finished by second sailing and headed back for senior year. Part 2 coming in a few months!
did you not have the option of going and training on a cruise ship?
Bens Tech Reviews we do! But the hardest cargo to work with is people right?? Idk, would love to try working on a cruise ship sometime though.
I made sure to like comment subscribe and turn on my post notifications 😀
How often did you get to contact family, and loved ones?
Every week! It was a 5 day voyage across from California to Oahu. So I would use the ship's email system when crossing and FaceTime them when in port.
@@nickvalentine758 do you know if every ship is the same? Like call and email wise? I'm dating a plebe at USMMA and we are just worrying about next year.
@@dewbsy3984 Majority of ships will have email, some ships even have wifi. And of course when you are in port, you will more than likely have service. But don't worry dude! Focus on the now and get there when you get there.
WOW!!!!
THANK YOU!!!
