So I watched some of your recent videos on note-taking, Luhmann and Zettelkasten and you piqued my interest. I enjoyed this video and you shared an eclectic collection of books, which makes me wonder, "How did to select these books???" You touched on this a bit with your comments on learning more about post-modernism, and I have the impression you just follow your curiosity, but is there more to it? Perhaps this would make an interesting video.

Thanks, Donnie. I follow my curiosity but you could say I am interested in bigger-picture truth and how that truth is/isn't, can/can't be lived out in societies and in our lives. So, I tend towards political philosophy, intellectual history, theology, economics, bioethics ... I am not as drawn to tech other than how it relates to human flourishing, or health care, etc. How about you? What do you like to learn about?

Not one of these is on a best seller list, or at least that I can think of. But each book sounded like a must read.
I’m just about finished with The Gulag Archipelago Vol 1. I think I will add In the First Circle to my next to read list.

Hey there, Levi! Yeah, I'm not usually tracking with the best seller list. I think you'll love In the First Circle. Make sure to let me know what you think if you read it.

Mike, thank you for these reviews. Have you read any books by Norman Wirzba? Just now finishing his book “This Sacred Life, Humanity’s place in a wounded world”. Awesome. Very reflective of the problems we are facing and the way out. Best for 2022. I look forward to each of your insightful pieces.

I like this collection except for #8. A definite eye roller from me on that one considering the long long history of Christianity imposing its will on others. It's very hard to swallow pill, especially from an Atheists point of view, that somehow Christian rights are being targeted or repressed.

Mike: I'm not too sure about that Christianity claim. Does it really fare better than other religions regarding human rights over the long haul? Hate to play the ole Hitler card, but what should we count the Third Reich as?
One can't deny that Christianity has eventually helped lead its people to some rights and freedoms. Same can be said for Judaism, Buddhism, Shintoism and quite a few others. So it's hard to tell if its due to religion or the general evolution of society and the slow drift away from a God (or gods).
However, we are at the point now that fundamentalists in their respective religions (inc. christnty) are preventing the expansion of rights and freedoms across the world. There is a perception (perhaps inaccurate) that the rest of the followers are just standing aside and watching too.
I'm sure I'm not explaining myself correctly! Apologies.

    • @MikeGastin
      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety +1

No worries. I think I am following you.
      1. Nazi issue. I think they were occultist at best. Not sure they rooted anything they did in Christianity, even though Germany has a Christian tradition, the National Socialists were not Christian, nor do I think they claimed to be.
      2. Fundamentalists. I am not sure what rights you're talking about. I am referring to *basic human rights*. The right to life. The right to freedom. The right to property. These rights are under extreme pressure right now; rights that the West has defended for centuries until now. How is Christianity causing any issues with these rights?
I suspect that you have a prejudice against any sort of religion and that you may be lumping them into one big "problem". Yes, Christianity was used in the Dark and Middle Ages to perpetrate wars, inquisitions, etc. At the same time, Christianity has given the world things like Hospitals and Universities, not to mention the moral code that the West was built upon.
Also, I have to point out that the slaughter and outright evil perpetrated in the same of atheistic materialism under socialist and communist regimes over the last 100 years is breathtaking. Tens, if not hundreds, of millions of people murdered in the name of progress. This was done by movements caught up in the "scientific" revolutions sparked by Marx. Of course, how about the billions that live under (or have lived under) the totalitarian, atheistic rule of China, the Soviets, et al?
I think the problem here isn't atheism or religion but mankind's penchant for evil. It's just a thing. I don't see any issue going back through the two thousand years of Christianity's history to formulate a framework that's moral and good. Why not look at history and religion and philosophy to find what works and what has worked in order to better address today's problems.
Lastly, if #8 makes your eyes roll, what is your solution/suggestion in light of the problems we're facing? More government? More science? More money? I'd like to know how someone with your worldview intends to respond to the needs and rights of human beings now and in the near future.
Thanks for engaging-it's an interesting topic for sure!
