  • I was initially filming the hail - not realizing what was happening until the winds picked up and someone yelled for us to get down. Branches were falling all around me. Thankful that no one was hurt and for first responders - they arrived on scene in less than 5 minutes. The roads were blocked by trees and there were a number of vehicles damaged, including mine.

For anyone curious, Environment Canada (national weather agency) has confirmed it was an EF-0 force tornado. So super weak as far as tornadoes go, but for Vancouver it’s unheard of (rare.)

You're forgiven, at least you didn't bring an EF-5. That would have caused more than 40+ deaths; mainly because Vancouverites aren't in the least bit familiar with tornadoes and most would probably not realize that with an EF-5 you have to take shelter...(underground, preferably in order to survive). And for those saying that it was a "cone"...that was a wedge - the debris on the water was spray being kicked up. The whole super-cell cloud mass was rotating, seeing the other video...it wasn't cold-core. @Xsong, glad you're OK...that was insane.

@@XsongX I don't know much about climate change affecting the tornadoes here. Since Environmental Canada's tornado record keeping prior to the 2000s is kind of poor, I was unable to search up tornadoes in this area. However since Vancouver is so close to the US border, I would assume that tornadoes occur at relatively the same frequency or close to it as they would in Oregon and Washington. Tornadoes in those areas are pretty common in the winter months, mainly from November to January at peak. Especially closer to the coast where sea breeze boundaries are at play more often than not. Last one I can recall in this area would be Port Orchard, Washington EF2, which occurred west of Seattle, roughly a 100 miles (or 165KMs) from Vancouver. So I doubt it would be much different, at least coastal action given it's a region.

The one in Wisconsin had tornado warnings all over the TV seconds before it hit. The one in Ontario had no warnings. Just severe lightning and black skies, and then suddenly trees were blown in half and a trailer park blown to pieces. The one in Alberta didn't hit us head on but still insane. We were camping and after it hit, our tents (mounted in the ground) were blown into the forest. A nearby town (5 miles away) was hit head on. Flood waters up to your waist, roofs blown off houses, etc.

In BC we can have from 0-4 tornados a year. In May of last year in Victoria there was one . Some of them aren’t even rated but from 1926 to last year we’ve had some but not like this ..
In sept of 1890 Victoria BC was stuck by a tornado there was some damage . There was another in 1897, and pretty much into the 1900s there are lists of Tornados touching down in BC but there wasn’t much damage maybe a few buildings being destroyed, trees being knocked down. But because of the area and being mostly mountain terrain they don’t happen as often as what happens back east in the prairies

That was a water spout. It formed over the water by ubc and moved inland. The trees were already weaken by the 3 months of no rain in the summer. Plus we get so much rain in vancouver the root system is very shallow. So the roots don't have to go deep into the ground. When we had that wind storm a few years ago it blew down 5000 trees in Stanley park. We went for a drive and found out the roots were not even 5-7 feet deep.

That was a sustained weather system, the one that caused a number of freighters to drag their anchors in English Bay and fetch up on Second Beach. It was a northwesterly.
I think that was the summer of 1976 or thereabouts. I happened to be outdoors on Texada Island at the time, about 100km north in Georgia Strait, and we had dramatic sustained winds there as well, especially at the NW end of the island. But what I particularly remember was that the night skies were crystal clear and the temperature pleasant. In short, it was a substantial frontal system, not a localized low pressure vortex like the one here in the video.
