- The parents of "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin are breaking their silence about his sudden death. They held an emotional news conference Tuesday and announced a "wrongful death" lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler, the parent company of Jeep. Yelchin was killed after his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward and pinned him in his driveway. Kris Van Cleave reports.
I saw the mother yesterday where she works, I recognized her instantly, she was on the phone and I gave her my heartfelt sympathy. She was very receptive and kind and said thank you. She was obviously devastated to lose her only child. Incredibly tragic and unfair.
Where does she work? I always see her whenever I visit Hollywood Forever
And that's why handbrakes are so important. Never trust a car without a mechanical handbrake lever.

+Onex Chang. I am shocked at how you people are so uneducated and still comment. And e-brake is also called a handbrake or parking brake and should always be used. I don't know where you got the idea, that if you drive an automatic that this brake should not be used, but I can tell you one thing, if you don't use it, you are not worthy to drive, because you pose a danger to other people every time you get out of your car.

@@Bayers2020 it’s not the Oscar itself but the recognition that comes from winning it. Basically the highest single achievement that an actor can receive. Maybe his ambitions lied there instead of his sole purpose being to procreate.

I barely found out about his death and I couldn't believe it. I loved him to much in alpha dog and that's where I first knew who he was. I still can't believe it he seemed like such a sweet guy. It's even more sad that he was the only child :( my heart goes out to his parents and the rest of his family 💔

I only found out about his death today how sad. I shall never buy a fiat or a Chrysler nor will my children or my childrens children. For a company to disregard safety over profits I hope they pay dearly for the losses all incur because of this negligent behaviour
I teach driver education and i most certainly can see teens not being sure if they put car in park or not . This must be recalled since it killed a very talented young man Anton Yelchin and caused devastation to his loving parents.
What a lose of a very talented young man...it still hurts to think he is no longer with us...I feel for his parents.

That shifter is COMPLICATED...we have been raised forever to CLICK shifter into park...this is a POOR DESIGN to put in any car...I was raised ONLY to put E-BRAKE on when parked on hill...not to jump out of vehicle to check on mail...ALSO...if a car rolls backwards without driver MAKE IT BEEP!!!...if sit did ...Anton could of gotten out of way.
How do you make it beep?

It’s actually not that complicated. I think what most people do with those click shifts is instead of shifting to brake, reverse, drive whatever they sort of just run through them to get to desired shift instead of going one at a time taking your time. Which is better for your transmission. So if you carry the same habit of if just running through shifts with the clicks instead of taking your time. it can mess you up when it comes to the e shift. I have never just run through the shift to reach desired shift. I do it one by one while pressing the brake pedal. So if let’s say in drive but want to park. I press the brake, press the lock button shift up stop(just for a second) on N shift up again stop on R shift up again stop on park then Release the brake. All in one fluid motion all the while looking at the dashboard to make sure you’re in the right gear.
Another thing most people tend to look down at their gear shift but you have to look at the dash board. If you just look down at the gearshift. you will run through them to reach desired gear looking down then assuming it’s the right one without making sure on the dashboard. The. Getting out. yeah you can easily make the same mistake he did assuming it’s in one gear when it went to another. You can’t look down at it because it goes back to center. Anyway they have since changed the cars who have the e shift I think from 2016 But for those who have 2012-2015 cars with e shifts make sure not to run through them. Take your time stop for one second at each gear while looking at the dashboard till you reach desired gear.
He’s honestly the first I have ever heard who had a problem with the e shift I don’t know anyone personally whose made this mistake but things happen. Maybe he didn’t press the lock button who knows. Because you can act still move the e shifts without pressing the lock button.
Poor guy. I could only imagine car was left in neutral rolling down not hearing a sound all the while walking towards his gate trying to get in then…….smh. probably by the time he realized it was too late smh. I feel so bad for his parents he was very talented gone to soon rip
He was my first crush growing up 😭😢❣️ such an amazing actor incredible indeed.. so sad when I heard the news the very first time it happened I was so shocked cause he was SO YOUNG . life is not fair sometimes.. he really didn't deserve it too many people dying who don't deserve it now he's a beautiful angel in the blue skies .. 💙🙏🏽 🕊️

That's so sad, hills and neutral gear is a dangerous. It's never good to rush while driving, my prayers go out to his family and parents, I'm sure it's a dark feeling knowing their sons accident could have been prevented. They are brave for speaking out so that others won't feel the same sorrow they are feeling now.

Anton also modified his vehicle so therefore resulting in further dangers ... I am however in agreement though that the car dealership where the car was purchased HAD NOTHING to do with his death (that’s just where he bought the car) ... instead I believe that the
JEEP/CHRYSLER Company should have been 💯 % responsible for the actors untimely death.
Maybe a poor situational awareness caused his death, or simply just an accident, BMW and MBenz have similar ZF shifter. No problem, no Recall. Little chance they will win the lawsuit. Just saying.
They'll make it safer in the future just the same. The video clearly states that intent.So no one else will die.
But jeep did eventually issue a recall, which is an acknowledgement that it was a problem beyond an isolated incident. Benz & bmw are 2 entirely diff car makes, so maybe even though similar in situation, the result was problematic for jeep whereas it wasn't for the other 2 brands.

So the situation between Jeep & bmw/benz was evidently different in some capacity. None of that even matters though, bc jeep already admitted fault in the defect bc they issued a recall for it... a recall means the manufacturer is saying themselves there's something wrong with the car model on *"their"* end and they will fix it since it's "their" fault.
@@asideofaioli4630 their recall is about other problem in transmission, which is the sudden gears changing during a drive. It's about the engine to gearbox issue.
However, This rollaway case is about driver and gear shifting input issue. They thought they had moved their gear into P. But actually they didn't. More on that, the didn't apply the parking brake, another crucial issue in Yelchin death.

Huh? A fix one year later after these cars were manufactured? Man, they were really fast on fixing the problem. Anton was great potential actor, and just now I'm hearing about his death today. That was the most unnecessary way of dying thanks to the manufacturers own greed.
He wasnt the best but with his conections witch rdj and Star Trek, he had a very bright future, Charlie bartlett was the one that made me believe he would have been an amazing actor with not experience. Its the loss of what he could have been, not what he was at the moment.

It's a sad death, I however don't place blame of FCA, the system didn't malfunction, people knew how it worked before they bought it! Just a terrible mistake, lack of awareness... and props to FCA for seeing the lack of awareness by consumers and issuing recalls! It was a tragic mishap, but let's not crucify and understand as humans we make mistakes and need to pay better attention.
