Whilst I am not criticising your preference, you cannot justifiably make your claim because you cannot possibly have heard every other singer. There are numerous singers from early in the 20th century who in my opinion outshine most of today's singers. I am not a Callas fanatic but I have to say her singing of "Vissi d'arte" along with Leontyne Pryce are unsurpassed to my ear.
A great melody. written by an Italian author played by a Romanian artist and sung in Whashington. Beauty has no nation. It belongs to everyone. It does not want boundaries.
Puccini dedicated Tosca to another MAGNIFICENT Romanian soprano, Hariclea Darclee , the first to sing it in 1900. "Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore " was added to initial Tosca, after Darclee asked Puccini to compose another aria, and this was composed especially for her.

Anghela demonstrate finest art with her soprano voice; never heard this as clear and with such long and stabile high notes ,always sensitive, she was completely filling all hearts, the best an artist can achieve. BRAVO Angela !

I have to admit I think that Angela is the real thing: a Star. She has passion, is very intelligent, and really musical. Her voice is rich and lovely, her delivery sincere and forthright and her presence charismatic. I think I like her a lot.

I have listened to her many times at The Met, La Scala, London, Paris, Berlin and elsewhere and never had any problem hearing her in the opera houses, so my opinion is based on actual experiences, whereas your comment about amplifiers was just rude and uncalled for. Moreover, there is much more besides volume when it comes to a voice, but unfortunately people nowadays think that in Opera the louder the voice, the better..which si wrong on so many levels. What a way to honour Grace Bumbry! Grace visited our school in Khayelitsha Township Cape Town way back in 1994,she was with Simon Estes.What they left here can be seen in Pumeza Matshikiza and more.3 years later Simon Estes High School was established,that High School produced what is now called Simone Estes Alumni Choir and Heavenly Voices. South Africa now produces opera singers like never before.Thanks to Mama Grace and Tata Simon for planting such a seed in our community.I wish one day they can come back here,we want to honour them in our own special way!
I'm not an opera expert...all I know is this beautiful woman's performance gave me chills!! The audience apparently felt the same. Even Bumbry's reaction expressed approval (at one point she winced anticipating maybe Angela not hitting a high note..but she nailed it!). Some in this thread criticize her technique, but if music is supposed to evoke emotion, Angela surely succeeded with me!

If I ever had the need to explain quickly to someone what an opera diva was... In the best of what that implies, I'd say "Watch this" To me, a novice... this is perfect in every way, she sings with such emotion and she looks so beautiful.
About this time with my wife I attended Covent Garden for a performance of Tosca with Bryn Terfel as Scarpia, opposite some lesser-known soprano. Just before curtain up, the familiar ritual was enacted of a flunky grovelling onto the stage to apologise abjectly that one of the leading singers was indisposed, and was to be replaced with a stand-in who happened to be in London that evening and had agreed to perform at short notice. But it wasn't BT who was poorly - rather the soprano was to be replaced by ... Angela Georghiu! Can you imagine? She just is Tosca, incarnate! The treat of a lifetime.

I do not have the eloquence (or the interest) in comparing this great singer to other great singers. I think she does a magnificent job her. David Lew Brewer was the vocal coach of Festiny child, Beyonce! And I am touched how touched how touhed Grace Bumbry is by Geoughous perfect Aria singing!
Simon bates, DJ. Moved to "classic FM" I was driving the M42 to Warwick. He played this aria and after it finished, there was a long pause. He could not speak, I was in tears and had to pull off the motorway. I bought the DVDs... My ambition is to see AG live. Thanks to Mr Bates, I am a life long fan.

I think that nothing - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in this whole world - compares to Callas... But Angela Gheorghiou is by far the best choice we've got today.
I think Callas is overrated. She was very good, but tonally there are several sopranos who are superior in my opinion, including this one.

Gheorghiu's version for Grace Bumbry, Kennedy Center honors (2009) is the best version that exists.

I had the honor once to meet Grace Bumbry in Berlin ( caled the firdt black Venus in Bayreuth). because her son, David Lew Brewer, dirring behhind her, used to live on Betlin, and was associated with my brothers music compsny. David Lew Brewer was the vocal coach of Festiny child, Beyonce!
And I am touched how touched how touhed Grace Bumbry is by Geoughous perfect Aria singing!
Just came in from listening to Fleming's version which sounded technically perfect to me but *this* had both. The interpretation is just THERE.

He could not speak, I was in tears and had to pull off the motorway. I bought the DVDs... My ambition is to see AG live. Thanks to Mr Bates, I am a life long fan.

How can this performance have 22 dislikes?! I was moved to tears it was so beautiful. Angela put so much emotion behind it, that I could feel it in my soul! Those who've disliked this either have no ear for real music or don't have a soul, because this was absolutely divine.

I was so taken back by the glance of the lovely lady we back then called the bee, Grace Bumbry, as I certainly inside of you Angela Gheorghiu, was so prepared to keep my head control not to let it reach the stars height as I did in the other clones. It was superb to be again inside of your soul. As still today I miss you so. It was a marvelous performance.
