I am so glad we were able to figure out a good method of getting these cool dev boards back up and running! Hopefully at some point I will be able to figure out how to get other software running on these as well, using the original SoC.

The iPod nano 4 and iPod touch 2 actually share the CPU in retail devices, which is probably why the prototype thinks it’s an iPod nano 4

Those broken line breaks to the end of the video were probably because the serial output's line endings are just LF while Windows normally expects CR LF. LF there then just moves the cursor down one line.

Oh, to be one of the people who worked with these. It's always awesome to see development artefacts pop up.

My theory: apple may have been testing if they could simplify their supply chain by having a shared cpu between the ipod touch and nano, possibly reducing the price of the ipod touch and segmenting it further from the iphone

Glad someone thought of doing this! It was my first thought when I you mentioned the NAND chips being removed that flashing the firmware onto another NAND would probably get them working again. Hopefully more prototype firmware is found so we can run more stuff on these boards!

My theory would be that Apple could have been experimenting to see how well the OS could function on different CPU ? Maybe they were benchmarking one of their in house designs VS one they could get off the shelf, I have no clue. But it is super cool to see all the development stuff for these devices!

I find it funny that the board has RS-232 hardware (at least the chips for it, the ftdi boi on there). That just seems so antithetical to apple but it makes sense for prototypes

Would it be possible to self-dump the contents of the nand via some command from the diags?

I wonder if they used these for bring-up or verification of certain hardware and didn’t need the “actual” processor. That would be a fairly common approach during integrated hardware development.

Do we know how the iPod Touch and iPhone developments lined up with one another?
Were they always planned as these companion devices, or did Apple see the desire (but not demand) for iPhone and rush to cost it down?

I am guessing Apple just didn't have the SoC for iPod Touch ready, and iPad Nano's SoC was similar enough to ship it out as a dev prototype.

The production iPod touch 2g did actually share the same S5L8720 processor as the iPod nano 4th gen, I'm assuming the reason this identifies as a nano is due to them opting for one board to test both devices given they shared the same processor and to save on cost

Would it be possible to run iOS on an iPod nano if dos dude was able to run iOS on this board with a nano processor?

Its Simple.... Doesn't take more than 2 brain cells to figure out why its a nano. If you were a company, lets just call you Apple, randomly. And you had MP3 players with screens but not touch screens and a touchpad wheel, again theoretically here not relating to absolutely anything. You're an engineer for this supposed 'apple' company and told to make a new device, an "iPod touch" lets call it do you.... 1. Start from scratch, get a new SOC fabbed, spend thousands in parts, all the labor to design a whole new circuit, blah blah; when you have the resources already to 2. do you start by building off an existing device like lets say that iPod Nano we theorized about earlier that you already have all the design documentation for, schematics, parts on hand probably in some drawer and just need to add a touchscreen?
Yeah, 2 makes a lot more sense to me, idk about you but it does to me. Apple is not hiding anything, this is not a product that "wassn't ment to be", nothing secretive, there is no wacky reason, no story to be told. its just engineering... You would do the same thing to " Hey can you make a touchscreen iPod" you'd take an iPod... and add a touchscreen.... and then realize thats bad, or come up with ideas and make it different, and make it again, and again and again and again.... show it to some people and realize your 6 months of effort were a waste, scrap everything and start all over now with lessons learned. so on and so forth. why does everyone think engineers just poof things into existence with their mega brains Revision 1?
TLDR; NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A COMPLEX CRAZY WACKY THEORY, most stories are just.... real....

I really admire you for your videos, but including so much of the mentioned video is harmful because no one will watch the original video now. maybe avoid doing that, mention the video and just include a direct link to it?

Thank you! And the segments from this video where specially made by dosdude1 to be included in this video, and are not on his channel. He did make another awesome video about putting release iOS onto one of these iPod touch development boards, but that is a separate video entirely. No clips from any public videos he has made where included in mine. :)
