Funny, but as an American I am not worried. China is about to completely collapse (but it will attack Russia just before it loses too many troops), as is maritime trade in the next few decades. The USA is going to fix up South America to be its production center, and the USA and Canada are going to be just fine financially etc. It's the rest of the world I am worried about. The Middle East is going to completely implode, as is North Africa. Europe is a backwater, and will continue to be so.
The reason we can be sure the Monroe Doctrine prevails ...at least in spirit... is due to the various organs of interamerican unity that exist. Most if not all of the countries China is trying to move in on are either Major Non Nato allies or member of the Rio defense pact with us or are members of the Organization of American States. Having some ties to China doesn't change that. Heck they're our biggest trading partner.
Meanwhile China is enemies with all its neighbors.

As a Brazilian, I would like to make some comments.
First, I dont like the title. We are no one's backyard. This is precisely the notion which is leading much of Latam's public opinion to go against the West. We are not colonies, or backyards, or anything of the sort. These dictatorships you showed on the video were all propped up by the CIA, disrespecting the sovereignity of our nations and throwing us into a human rights and economic crisis which is still felt to this day.
Second, if we trade with China, it is because it is benefitial to us. The US and the UE are in direct competition with Brazil's soy exports, for instance, and have blocked us from trade deals with their respective economic blocks. Much of US industry is leaving Brazil, and chinese industries are taking their place. Why would we oppose that?
Third, to wrap everything up, I would like to say that we are only acting in our own best interests. Ideologies and cultural ties are all well and good but it is money that makes the world go round, and China is simply offering us a better deal than the West.
If its too good to be true, it is.

i'm from Brazil and i have some relations with the automobile sector. And I can say that China is saving this sector here. When Daimler stopped making cars here, China's GWM bought and expanded the plant, with the first vehicles to start assemble in 2023. When Ford closed its plants here, BYD bought two plants. There is no going back.
China is simply filling in the vacuum left by a rapidly declining US.
The China "debt trap" narrative has recently been debunked by the British Debt Justice and World Bank data. They found that African countries owe 3x more to Western banks, asset managers and oil traders than to China, and are charged double the interest. 12% of Africa's external debt was owed to China lenders, compared to 35% to Western private creditors.
China has since cancelled the debt for 17 African nations.

The title sums up nicely, they see Latin America as nothing but an extention of their own.
US see South America as minions and pawn to be exploit, enslave and sacrifice for the well being of US citizens.
But China, they see the importance of this region, these guys are the golden ticket for China to undermine USA's might and very valuable strategic partners to balance out US influence in Asia.
China see these guys the same way US see Japan Korea and Taiwan. Keystone Foreign partner that is crucial for the victory in the next cold war.
It's worthwhile to point out the growing influence of China in South America, but this clearly reflects the failure of the United States to take care of the folks in it's so call backyard. Those investments could have easily been from the US. But the attitude of the US towards south America is often condescending, and many other adjectives could be use to describe this attitude. So China is filling the void created by the US and in some respect the EU. The US will have to deal with the results of this , good or bad.

For centuries exploited by Europe and US,, African countries are gravitating towards china for their investments and Infrastructural development. Europe and America continues to exploit Africa through corporations and politics. Just look at West Africa where France still keep them from developing. In Djibouti China changed the landscape. They are making ports and malls.

I enjoyed that content more, he is more eloquent than the writers. I think his limited English forced him to be more careful with how he selected words, with the end effect being that he expressed ideas more concisely and precisely. Nowadays his content sometimes resembles American geopolitical rambling.

The fact that the US likes or supports LatAm dictators does not mean China does can’t like and support them just as well. Actually, this is quite common. The Paranal Hill Observatory (Observatorio Cerro Paranal) is located south of Antofagasta, and is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). China has nothing to do with it.
Indeed, China has nothing to do at all with Paranal oor other ESO projects. That said, in astronomy, China has a very strong collaboration with the UChile at Cerro Calan, to the degree that it is sometimes jokingly referred to as the Chinese Institute.

@sabin97 well it is the A in USA, but I do understand your sentiment. I am an American, but also a casual student of history. It is difficult to find any period in US history in which our relationship with anyone south of the Rio Grande was not defined by a mixture of indifference, exploitation, suspicion, and hostility. And then the irony of it all is that most people of the USA are baffled when Latin America doesn't want to be our friends. I look at our history with the region and marvel at the fact that there isn't greater animosity.
But make no mistake. China is not a better partner. They offer more, but where much is given, much is required. Their version of generosity is a debt trap. For thousands of years, the Empire of China ruled far beyond its borders by making most of South East Asia into tributary states. This debt trap strategy looks a lot like a modern variation on the same design. Trading sovereignty for prosperity sounds like a raw deal to me, but it isn't my choice to make. Regardless of what choice the people's of South America make, I hope they are able to find the freedom and prosperity that they have long been deprived of by pretty much every foreign power to take interest in them.

They will give loans that you cannot pay back anymore, and they force you to relinquish the investment as collateral. Not only that you need to pay the debt, but you also need to give up the investment too for many decades until the debt is paid. Montenegro can vouch for me if you think I am wrong. The only major highway they built, the Chinese now own. And the reason they did not go bankrupt is because of EU money.

All the countries you just talked about are American and in America. It's reinforces US exceptionalism to use such language. It might be an Anglo-Saxon thing. They also say they are from "Africa," the English speakers in South Africa. I'm sure if Australia hadn't massacred the other nations on its continent, I could say something about their appropriation of the continent as their nationality. Language affects culture. For example, in Spanish there is no distinction between abortion and miscarriage. Honduras has a full abortion ban in their constitution. Women who call emergency services may end up under arrest. As a peruvian, I can tell you that I think we have already been mistreated by the west too much, and are probably glad to see alternatives in the market: China, Russia, India, etc. Of course, only time will tell.
I can tell you something that was popular some years ago, probably a decade, (and is probaly still the case, I left Peru 3 years ago) when the west was going through a crisis: "Since we are also teaming up with China, the issues of the west affects us less now, and we are glad for that."

That's very sad. I agree that Peru has been exploited terribly by the West, but to welcome different versions of exploitation by China, Russia and India just to experience a different flavour is beyond sad. Every time the US tries to arm Taiwanese/Republic of China (non UN recognized) the same way Putin arms the Donetsk republic (non UN recognized) against Ukraine, the Chinese students get riled up
Their strategic analysis is also correct: the US has already proven unable to handle any biochemical attack on its own soil. It is a no brainer that the Chinese have weaponised a whole array of different viral weapons to decimate the US population should the US decide to intervene in Taiwan against China.
It is perhaps fortunate that COVID revealed this American strategic weakness.

If 'the West' takes issue with China's plans for mostly mutually beneficial trade agreements, then perhaps they should've been more mutually beneficial with their own 'business' down south. If a better offer than exploitation comes along, then you can't fault these countries for taking it.

The interesting thing about China's global reach is it's not the first time they brought about a prosperous era of trade. In the fifteenth century it was seen as a sign from heaven that the Emperor ( now Xi Jinping) was meant to rule over China. China didn't require overseas military intervention, it's superior navy and again, it's own sense of belonging to a successful trading nation were enough. We will see whether this remains true today.

The USA has been making and treating South America continent as its own backyard for decades. Unchallenged. It has enjoyed and exploit the continent for considerable amount of time, much during the golden age of its superpower till today. While there are benefits, however, it is also arguable that local people lives do not get necessarily better during all these decades.
(1) Perhaps, the unchallenged status contributes to such development, as we can see now when China or any other potential superpower rival makes its footstep in a new region, the resulting superpower’s competition do provide advantages for the locals in the form of higher political bargaining power that through all these times, the locals do not have. While it is too early to say if China’s investment will make locals’ lives better than during USA times, early observation seems to point out that the Chinese are dedicating more time, effort, energy and money than the US. This could be due to cultural differences, as the people in Eastern cultural sphere tend to have long-term view or view efforts from long-term angle while the Western cultural sphere tend to be the opposite. As such, it is an interesting time and a fresh new opportunity for the region.
(2) Historical developments do play a part as well. The US has been in long-term “fight” with the Soviet Union in spreading each other's influence (capitalism vs communism) throughout much of the second half of the 20th century until its victory after the collapse of the Soviet Union. These long-term efforts do shape how a country behave to a certain extent, such as in formulating its foreign policy. Perhaps there is a considerable focus in making sure many countries do not fall into opponent’s influence, which this of course, consume time, resources and efforts. As such, much of the past decades in South America region, we can arguably see more focus towards maintaining ideological influence grip than say, the economic development and political stability for the locals. The Chinese, however, as Shirvan also mentions, seems to put more focus on business and economy. While it is true that there has to be benefits for the superpowers, no matter who the superpower is, at this time, it is too early to see and compare how much better or worse the locals’ lives will be in the upcoming decades when comparing towards the new superpower vs maintaining the status quo. Nonetheless, it will be an interesting observation when different superpower put focus on different areas.

You also see the numbers, Chile was from the first countries to have mass vaccination and it has done pretty well since some months after the mass vaccination started. You also have to Account that if they waited in line for having so much pfeizer or moderna shots they would have gotten them easily a year later, which means a year or so more of potentially closing big parts of the economy. I would say the vaccines payed themselves quite good.

Tianqi Lithium has a big stake in SQM's Salar de Atacama mine in Chile, but the other mine in Chile is owned by America's Albemarle and the two in Argentina are owned by America's Livent and Australia's Allkem. Meanwhile, Bolivia is a long way from ever achieving production. Of course, China would prefer to do business with South American countries than Australia, but that's another matter.

There's growing political pressure here in Paraguay for the country to switch allegiance from the ROC to the PRC, due to how much money the country would earn by the new trade deals alone. It would be a big blow to Taiwan if that ends up happening, as the country is one of its oldest allies.
It's just about time, sooner or later Paraguay will recognize PRC as sole government of China.

As if European countries or US are carrying about democracy.. that’s not important as long as the countries are doing what’s expected.. and if that is not happen anymore then they place other governments or support’s what currently fits best in their interests..
So, a "deep" analysis on China's role in South America and how the region is moving away from the US and not a SINGLE MENTION of the history of American "interventions" through coups, the creation of banana republics, etc??? Even if you are too young to remember, this fact seems to show a complete misunderstanding of the impact of emotional trauma on societies and how this shapes their future actions (Russia in Ukraine, anyone?), which is a bit disapointing for someone who is supposed to be interested in geography and politics (and therefore history)...

Yea its quite disappointing because 1. The US is still by far the largest actor in the region, and then comes Europe. China is only a distant third and 2. These problems that were mentioned are not new, we had them (worse) with other partners, so putting it in context will make people understand the situation better

China is now the primary commercial partner to every single country in Latin America with the exception of Mexico and Colombia, and even the latter has seen its rise of Chinese investments rise four-fold the past three years, to the tune that it'll surpass America as its most important commercial partner in short order.
China is at this point *the* main commercial partner to LATAM, with America second and Europe a very distant third.
two days ago I was driving by the main highway that exist in Chile, the 5 expressway, and as I currently do not use it (as I live near the shore), I couldn't avoid looking into the big Chinese characters depicting the China Railway Group Limited signals in every toll. Surprised? no, amazed? maybe.
If you go to Chinese 1st tier cities half the signs are in English too, with investment and trade comes culture influence too, 1/5 of the entire planet speaks Chinese and 1/5 speaks English, teach your kids English and Chinese, when they grow up they can do business with the world's two largest markets, most ppl just haven't realized this truth yet.
