DiC's Sailor Moon Syndication Promotional Tape
This tape was sent to TV stations to pitch Sailor Moon as The Next Big Thing.
It's a horrid display of shameless corporate advertising.
You can tell that DiC sent out the video before any real work was done on the localization. Notice the Sailor Scout's names!! This is aweful!!

And I came back here after watching the found Saban Moon pilot (where, suprise, suprise, Sailor Moon's civilian form is called Victoria there).
I was watching this with my brother, QUITE a few years ago. It got to this part: "Girls will love Sailor Moon's transformation, from everyday schoolgirl to glamorous superhero." So since my brother was sitting right there, I wondered out loud, "What will boys love?" IMMEDIATELY, it goes, "Boys will love the nonstop action." And I CRACKED UP.
Boys will love the fact that the Sailor Scouts are super hot chicks who rock the shortest skirts this side of the milky way.

This was before Sailor Moon premiered on US television syndication back in around August 1995 before the anime series made first launched in September 11, 1995 in the United States. This was the very first anime that my young brother and I saw when I was a kid from 25 years ago. If it wasn't for Sailor Moon, I weren't being here today continue watching anime as my childhood favorite hobbies. Even though there were scary human girls on Sailor Moon and other anime titles...gulp...anyway. This is the 25th anniversary of the English language dub version of Sailor Moon made its land shore to the West.
Why are they using clips of Zoicite dressed as Sailor Moon to refer to the real character?

Sailor Moon is not about action (even there is action in the show).

To me, Victoria would've been perfect for the DiC version with her princess form being Princess Serena. However I would've changed the other four names. Sorry, but those other four doesn't work.
For Mercury, I would change that name from Blue to Riley
For Mars, from Dana to Chinatsu
For Jupiter, from Sarah to Mackenzie
For Venus, from Carrie to Astrid.

This wasn't a commercial for potential viewers. It was put together to get it syndicated in the US, which is why it was pitched like that, with an emphasis on how marketable it was.

Syndicators put it on the early morning slot causing the show to fail, that is until a certain checkerboard network that airs moving drawings picks it up for a certain block that takes place in a cool spaceship with a robot that's voiced by Steve Blum and the rest is history

It also didn't help that he focused mostly on Japanese consent and same-sex couples.
Well, I guess that was just his way of showing his opinion on the show, but I do agree that his take on the Sailor Scouts/Senshi/Gardians outfits was in a way a misunderstanding. He might have felt tuned on when seeing them in short skirts when he was younger, but I doubt that was Takeuchi's intention when designing their apearances (even though earlier visual concepts of some of the characters were more revealing).
Ugh that’s the sole reason why I stopped watching him and his bias reviews. He doubts his masculinity so of course he hat to shat on the show

As long as you know how butchered it is and that it is garbage compared to the original. Enjoy it all you want either way, but the Japanese version (and new dub) are much better and accurate.
No there are people that like it. Anyone that watched the series in English in the 90's liked it then they found the sub version and decided they like that one more.
Then when it comes to people still liking this version of sm over crystal it will end up like Fullmetal, everyone will rush over to the new ones side and say they always hated the other

I've been watching the Japanese version. I just can't let go of my childhood memories of the early 2000s.
"And Boys will" pretend they don't like it and think it's a stupid girls show. When I was younger (when SM was airing in English for the first time) a boy would have gotten jumped for liking My Little Pony or anything else geared towards girls (including SM) and would have lost their 'friends' if they admitted they liked it. Now a days though its okay because as it even was back then, it's just a tv show.
i delt with bullying for liking it even from my teacher and those kids who bulled me ended up becoming low life losers the dub really kinda made it worse

The reason why they’re all named differently is because these were the names that Renaissance Atlantic and Toon Makers were going to use in their half live action half cartoon American adaptation of Sailor Moon (that fans have dubbed Saban Moon) before Toei quickly shut down their proposal and handed the rights to Dic instead. Clearly their original intent was to use the names RA and TM were planning to use in their show before changing them. And hey, some names weren’t changed. Darien is still Darien and Queen Beryl is still Queen Beryl.

Dude some bean counter just told them it sold toys and they were like "SOLD." I'm sure the presentation team did more research on the anime's market shares than then did on plot or character.They probably just read a vague outline and called it a day.
As much as I despise what DiC did to the show but I will have to reluctantly give DiC credit where it's due. Believe it or not DiC actually saved us from what could have been vomit inducing and stress-induced blindness that Toon Makers was going to bring to our television. If Toon Makers had the license.... God... just... ugh.... fuck.... no.... Thank God DiC stepped in and won the license. It's either we get the travesty of DiC's version, or we would have had to wait 20 years for a decent dub, like the Viz version we have now, or longer, or not at all, and none of us wouldn't have known about the Sailor Moon that we know. The fact that DiC saved us has lead us to VIZ buying the license and giving us the amazing dubbing and honestly, I am very VERY greatful. It took for-fucking-ever but most importantly, we finally got it and the younger people at the age they are now won't have to worry about witnessing DiC's version that we saw when we were their age. Unless they choose to :p

I agree. Think about how worse that could've been if Saban got involved with Toon Makers' version of Sailor Moon. Now I don't mind the different races on shows, but TM's pitch was just awful. Half-anime for fight scenes and half live actioned. The names were worse for the four Inner Girls. Mercury being Blue, Mars as Dana, Jupiter as Sarah and Venus as Carrie.

It's hilarious that DIC is promoting this show like it would be a phenemenon in America and then they give up on it after dubbing only 65 episodes abandoning the show halfway through season 2 due to low rating in the USA.. And wouldn't finish dubbing the second season until 3 years later after high ratings on Toonami convinced them to do so.

Mannnnn.... I grew up to the Dic dub as a kid when it was on TV, and I have to say....when I watched Sailor Moon R, uncut, it blew my 12 year old mind. Sailor Moon was so much more bad ass and hardcore in the uncut version. That being said, I still have a love for the Dic version... But hooo boy, Dic's sensorship of the show to make it more "kid friendly" was pretty common in the US for anime at the time. they sort of dumbed all the shows down in the dubs on TV, haha. It's okay.... the 90s were weird.
Viz media got all episodes uncut and yes it so awesome uncut, i still like the dic one. It may be censored but i enjoy it, i still love me some sailor moon.

I'm hooked at the Japenese version. The English Dubs are just hillarious... I can't think of any other way to put it... ^___^' Just go watch the Japanese version, you'll be amazed what has been cut in the English version.

Out of all the girls in the old (DiC) dub only Mercury and Mars had last names. Amy Anderson and Raye Hino. In the old TokyoPop translation of the manga Darien's was Shields. I kinda of wondered what DiC would have given the other girls for last names..... Cause Cloverway gave them their Japanese ones while keeping the English first names, which caused an inconsistency with Amy's going by that dub lol.
If I gave Serena one for example it'd probably be based on or pulled from her og last name of Tsukino. So she'd be Serena Tsuki cause that's Moon in Japanese lol. Could easily make moon related jokes with that. XD It's kinda of funny to think about.
I swear in the early 90s I saw this and this turned me off on sailor moon for a long time till I got curious about the manga and got into loving it.

I've ALWAYS said that mainstream kiddie television was completely the wrong vehicle for something like this. This is a teen show. More than that, it's a Japanese teen show, which is at least 2 years beyond what's considered teen-appropriate programming in America.

I think some network businessmen at DiC drank a bit of Power Thirst.
So imagine this being played at a pitch meeting with a bunch of 40-year-old dull, dry men in business suits discussing if this can pull in ratings.
Sailor Moon was Victoria, Sailor Mercury was Bloom, Sailor Jupiter was Summer, Sailor Mars was Diva, and Sailor Venus was Karri.
And this, kids: is how not to make promos for any cartoon/anime/whatever. :D
