Thank you so much for this incredible video! The research into all aspects of embroidery and the history behind it makes my heart sing. I will never look at a pineapple again without thinking of Charles II. How incredibly generous of you to create this for us. I will watch again and again and recommend this to all of my friends who love history, costume, and embroidery. 🍍🌻🌻🍍🌹

Enjoyed this presentation. I plan to go back and review this again, so much interesting history and information. Thank you for the background of Bathya which I plan to start stitching this year. Took an EGA class that required learning reverse stitching, so now am ready to stitch.

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and beautiful samplers. I look forward to the future presentations. Needlework is my favorite pastime. I enjoy stretching my skills by stitching specialty stitches and love the satisfaction when I succeed. The most difficult sampler I have stitched is “Loara Standish” which was stitched using a variety of reversible stitches. After finishing “Loara” my son turned over a new sampler that I was stitching and questioned why it wasn’t reversible too. I explained that that every sampler does not need to be reversible.

Fantastic lecture Nicola ! Also a wonderful look into history, photos of textiles and period pieces were beautiful. I did not know or apparently had forgotten the amazing history of your Bathya. What a marvelous piece in our collection ! Looking forward to the next Mrs. Parkman lecture.

Very interesting. I love learning the history of the arts and crafts that I actually engage in - brings so much perspective. A topic that I would love to learn more about is how did silk thread change in color over time - that is, what were the effects of fading because of sunlight, exposure to air, etc.

Thank you so much, this was super interesting. Amazingly many of the houses of the Huguenot weavers in Spitalfields have survived, characterised by larger windows and loft windows which provided more light to allow them to work on their looms. Anyone interested who is in London - check out Brushfield St - E1 6AG.

Amazing story about the Austrian sampler.
    What a treasure!
My great uncle went back to Europe after the Holocaust and he retrieved items of values which had been buried by family who were eventualky murdered by the Nazis . A few of of the items remain in my parents home ; a Russian Samovar and some silver spoons.
Im glad that the textile collection eventually was returned to the family.
Thanks fo posting these wonderful and informative videos. Watching this tonight was a wonderful treat after work.

Beautifully illustrated history of needlework! Truly enjoyed the history of early band samplers and of how they evolved to the samplers of the 1800s. I remember in the 90s, the 17th and 18th century band sampler reproductions that were being produced and loved them! I think that’s why I am slow to enjoy the samplers of the 19th century LOL. Loved watching this immensely ❤

Nicola, thank you for the wonderful presentation. It's amazing the skills that stitchers from previous generations had like the cutwork, reticella, etc. It was so interesting to hear the back story about Bathia, and how the family's pieces were stolen and held. Glad they eventually went back to the family even if they sold them. And glad you got to purchase that beauty. Take care, and happy stitching.

Oh my Nicola! What a wonderful and information packed presentation! It is so much so that I will repeat watch so I can take notes. You should write a book! Why not with your dialogue and photos you just presented. What my first take away is symbolism. True centuries ago. True today in every stitch we take. A new thought: needleworkers are historians too.

What a fascinating display of embroidery, in particular band samplers! These are my absolute favourite too - I am currently stitching one ( one of a set of four beautiful seasonal samplers from a 20 year old needlework magazine). I love the variety of stitches and it was wonderful to see these in such close detail - I will definitely watch this again! I would love to think that I might tackle Bethia one day as I would love to have her hanging on my wall 😍
