  • BMW M140i with M Performance Exhaust.
    So as some of you will know we have experienced the dreaded exhaust rattle on our original back box and it's replacement.
    Well finally I have some good news, BMW resolved the problem by fitting a valveless system on to our car and I am delighted to say that our BMW M140i now has the BMW M Performance Exhaust fitted.
    Initial impressions of the M Performance Exhaust are that the overrun is much more active, there is a change in exhaust tone generally and there is an improvement from within the cabin (which was the main reason I wanted one anyway!).
    I am very happy with this result and now we just need to get some miles under the M Performance Exhausts belt to build up some carbon and see what it really can do.
    Any questions leave them below and as always please subscribe to the channel for plenty more content to come.
    Cheers
    Stephen

    Had my M140i a year, and after looking at loads of varying options, I’ve finally ordered a M Performance Exhaust. I’m trying to keep mine BMW OEM as possible.
    Thanks for this video, you were one of reasons I purchased my car in the first place after watching your reviews.
    Haven’t seen you online for a while. Would be great to see some more content from you soon!

    I’ve got the manual M140i and they won’t supply it due to the alleged drone from the 6 speed. It sounds lovely, only downside is the exhaust tips are sticking out a bit to much.

      Yeah so I've heard, which is a shame. But there is nothing worse than exhaust drone on long journeys. Yep agree, it looks like a wheel barrow and its slightly wonky but not much I could do about that sadly.

      Sadly I don’t think they will. In reality, hot hatches are more practical in Europe/UK, the us market is more SUV and Pickup truck/sedans, without a need for this style. As cool as it would be, it probably wouldn’t do well at all in the US market😔

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety +1

      Well we had our original replaced with another standard backbox as it started rattling 6 weeks after we collected the car, then the 2nd backbox lasted two weeks before a rattle returned, it was also worse than the original rattle. Just went back to the same dealer and stated that it wasn't good enough as the part is clearly not fit for purpose and we want a system without a valve so it doesn't return. We did have a couple of other things going on with the dealership as well so I think they wanted to do their best to rectify. I hope that helps!

      Hey Paul, sorry it's been a busy 6 months in all honesty and I didn't just want to pump crap videos out for the sake of it. I've been lining up a couple of new cars to drive and will film them plus I am considering looking at the running costs for the car. Sadly it's the wrong time of year with the short hours of daylight, which restricts when I can film. I will be back and cheers for the message - it's appreciated! Funnily enough I was in Alderley Edge 2 weeks ago and managed to see that lovely SVJ and Shmee's Senna! Both stunning.

      Hi mate, yeah we went through two standard backboxes first with the rattle returning on the second one within 2 weeks of it being put on. We just went back to the same dealer and stated that it wasn't good enough as the part is clearly not fit for purpose, it's not good enough on the top 1 series and we want a system without a valve so it doesn't return. We did have other stuff going on with the dealership though. I'd check where you stand with trading standards as well

    I'm confused by this. My 140 sounds like a bag of nails, courtesy of the exhaust rattle on startup. My dealer denied there was a problem and simply refused to do anything about it, stating that all M cars do the same. Others have had the same response from their dealers and it would seem to be the standard approach taken by BMW. How did you get them to concede that not only is there an issue but then to supply you an M Performance at no cost. I offered to pay the trade-up price but my dealer was having none of it, simply reiterating that my car was fine. czcams.com/video/TGSdF9xOwKE/video.htmlWhat do you think?I've been in M140s with both the standard and M Performance exhausts and from the inside at least, both are quieter than a dead mouse in a vacuum but that suits me fine, I just want to get rid of this Trabant-like rattle!!!

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety

      I believe it is dealer specific on whether they are willing to accept the rattle. czcams.com/video/HOKOlIb3dqU/video.htmlm53s that was the rattle which appeared within the first few weeks of them fitting the second standard exhaust. Didn't specify we wanted the MPE just a valveless system so we didn't have to come back for a third time.

      @tom314 Před 6 lety

      Hi, related to the system droning, I've just had one fitted (due to the dreaded rattle) and I find it gets significantly louder when on load between about 1500-2000rpm enough so that I can just about feel it through the seat. Almost feels like the boot floor resonates slightly. Do you find the same? Trying to decide whether it's normal or not.

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety

      I'll be honest, not that I have noticed. But I will keep a ear out for it incase its there and I've just missed it.

    • @tom314
      @tom314 Před 6 lety

      ST Supercars cheers, I think it's worse in comfort auto purely because that's the rev range it prefers. Others on babybmw have said it's normal, be interesting to see what you notice although it's quite obvious on mine.

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah that might be why, I don't drive the car in comfort really to be honest. I still haven't noticed it but I'll take it out and leave it in comfort and see if I notice anything. Normally if it's in comfort my partners in the car and insists on loud music ha!

    The fitting is fecking awful - not only does one stick out more than the other, the M badge is wonky too!!!! The rattle issue is not an exhaust problem, and simply a nut that needs shaving back - just check on Bimmerpost.
    You need to go to a better dealer.
    Epic exhaust though, and it's manic on a 440i as part of the MPPSK
    Has ASD been coded out? It should be as part of the installation.

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety +1

      They did an awful job of fitting it to be honest!! It may well be and they could have quite easily resolved the rattle first time round by implementing the fix. But they didn't and we ended up with the MPE so I can't complain (other than about the awful fitment). I am led to believe ASD has been coded out

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety

      Just where you fabricated with the dremmel. Was it the actual tips themselves?

    • @chrisjohnhyman
      @chrisjohnhyman Před 6 lety +1

      If the exhaust is fitted properly onto the original exhaust pipe, you can remove the M performance tips (they unscrew from underneath) shave a few cm's off the backbox on each side and then fit the covers back on. They'll sit a few cm's further back now.
      If however, your dealer hasn't quite seated the backbox properly onto the original exhaust. your tips will point slightly downward (like mine were) or not be level (like yours). So I took the backbox off completely and removed a few cm's more from the original exhaust pipe, this allowed the M performance exhaust to sit so that the tips came out perfectly horizontally and in a more natural position.
      It's a bit OCD on my part, but its an expensive part and to have such shoddy fitment and lack of attention to detail is piss poor from BMW.
      My dealer told me you get the wheelbarrow look because BMW want you to get the M performance rear diffuser.

    • @STSupercars
      @STSupercars  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for that detailed response, I appreciate that. The look I currently have frustrates me every time I look at it so I need do something about it.
      I will get underneath and take a look at where the backbox joins the original exhaust. I believe there is a mark where it should sit correctly?
