Best Car Chase EVER

  • From the comedy 'Short Time' with Dabney Coleman, Matt Frewer and Teri Garr. Overall, considering all factors, I find this the best car chase scene ever filmed.
NOTE: Coleman's car here is NOT a Diplomat. The grille in this red car says Plymouth. As the chase was filmed in Canada where the Plymouth Gran Fury was sold as the 'Caravelle' from 1978-1982, and as the 'Caravelle Salon' from 1983-89, it might be a Caravelle. But the fender emblems were removed, so we can't say for certain that it isn't a US-market Gran Fury.
    See www.allpar.com/squads/diplomat... for more specs.

What I really love about these chases is NO over cutting, NO stupid music tracks, NO gratuitous special effects, just great visuals and natural sounds. You don't get that kind of filmmaking anymore. Continuity check - count the number of hubcaps that come off the Charger and how many are still on when it finally crashes!

Then there’s the continuity error of the cops all driving Diplomats, but then suddenly driving late 70s/early 80s Caprices when they get shot up or wrecked.

thanks for posting this, totally agree, I play the photographer in this film that photos Dabny and Corbin, during the award ceremony on the steps of Vancouver City Hall, (you see me briefly at the bottom of the stairs holding the camera just after the flashes), and I was totally impressed (and surprised) with this chase and have claimed it one of the best since the first time seeing it. One very cool fact is that it was filmed in an area of Vancouver where the 1986 World's Fair was held, 'Yaletown' . All of those warehouses have been either extremely upraded to high-end shops, pubs, galleries, restuarants or have been replaced with high-end condo's, some in the ten's of millions, so it also holds a piece of history. Have always been proud of my very minor connection, largely because of that car chase.

Carol Jones. They had a charm but you may be looking back a bit fondly.
My brother tapped a pole with my sisters 78 Ttop Trans Am his first four minutes driving the car. It was wrapped in half around the pole.
I used to drive those cars from Mavericks - Taurus. The 73-90 US bodies and drivetrains were mostly disposable. Cars didn't even get finished at the factory. Often dealer mechanics had to align doors and mount parts just tossed in the footwells before coming off the lines. Steel strikes and fuel targets caused factories to start using metal they once used for dashes and trunk linings. The sound coating of tar spray was to keep a door from denting as it rolled down the conveyor. The motors went out of tune constantly. When electronics were added in the 80s it got worse.
The 63-73 cars were modern and tough. The 55-62 US cars were heavy metal and very simple but few were unibody and they all rusted a lot.
Nostalgia is harder to feel when a young driver of the era is around. My favorite car of youth was a 1971 Cutlass Rocket 350 I got in 1978. The most durable car I've ever owned was a 1990 Mazda that went 20 years, 250,000mi on the original non rebuilt engine and clutch. Still looked fresh when I sold it in 2011.

This IS definitely one of the best ever chase scenes, exciting & funny to boot. I've loved "Short Time" ever since I saw it when I was 19, & it's really a cult classic among folks who remember it. I never was much of a Dabney Coleman fan, but he was really great in this role, a kind of manic, desperate frustration that's so hilarious. I've never even heard of this movie in my life, but that has to be some of the most impressive stunt driving I've ever seen done. Very, very impressed. I love most of the car chases out there, but I would have to agree, this one is one of the best out there. I would say other very close contestants would have to include Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and any of them from the Jason Bourne films.

  • @capvid88

In my opinion, Bullitt, The French Connection, and the Seven Ups, in that order, are the three best chase scenes ever filmed, past or present. Steve McQueen did all his own stunt driving, something insurance companies would NEVER allow a movie superstar to do today! And the motorcycle stunt driver was killed. Look closely at the first impact. A shot of him getting up afterwards was added to "mask" what actually happened during the filming.

This is a pretty good car chase, but nothing tops the ORIGINAL 'Gone In 60 Seconds'......and I'm not talking about the lame remake attempt with Nicholas Cage.
'Bullitt' with Steve McQueen layed the foundation and set the mold for what an excellent car chase should be, but 'Gone In 60 Seconds' broke the mold and ran full speed to the all-time title of 'Best Car Chase EVER'

Oh my word! Of course...this is a much forgotten car chase scene when the whole genre is discussed. This definitely beats THE Bullitt scene...if only by being more epic alone. My favourite is still the various from 'Blues Brothers' though. I remember this film (Short Time) and being surprised that not only did it make it directly to the cinema (despite not having a conventional A-list lead but also that I bothered to go watch it; I was glad I did because it not only was a great comedy but it served to show me at a young age, that Hollywood and success doesn't have to be all show. Good choice dude
