  • Here at Rosa String Works we do more than just repair instruments. Sometimes we help make last wishes come true.
    One special grandmother had one last wish. To have the fiddle that Grandpa played, to play one last time as love ones say goodbye to the matriarch of the family.

    BTW, Grandpa's method for holding the tailpiece on is actually pretty ingenious. It eliminates the stretching you have to do with the usual cord attachment, and it will hold forever. Villaume would have approved, considering some of the goofy things he came up with as "improvements" on the instrument. Kudos to Grandpa for that one.

    The thing about any technique is whether it works or not. If it does, then it's fine. If it doesn't, then it needs to be changed. If your way of doing things isn't the way someone else does it, fine. If it works, that is all that matters. Norm Abrams and Roy Underhill taught me years ago that there is always a different way to do something, and as long as it gets the job done, that is all that matters.
    Best to the family, I hope Grandma's passing is gentle and easy. Best to all of them.

    Jerry, That was a very nice gesture for you to prioritize that repair. Nice job. Many years ago, for his birthday, I tweaked my father's old Stradivarius copy violin. He only played it back in school when he was in his early-late teens . I added a new bridge, strings, and a chin rest. I cleaned it , polished it and tuned it. My father died back in 2006, but his old violin still remains in our family.

    Jerry, I do some work on antique furniture. When dowels have shrunk and are loose in the mortise, I have used paper, but usually I will use shavings from a hand plane or cloth. With all that said...I think you’re good to go...as if you need to hear that. Great job!

    Hi Jerry;
    Thank you for this video. I was so bored and then this video popped up to save the evening. Nice job for a "quick and dirty" fix. You always seem to be able to find a simple way to bring instruments back. Simple relative to the complexity of the job at hand. It looks great for such a quick fix.

    You have a good heart, and a true inspiration of how we should treat people when it really matters. I have watched nearly all your videos, and I wait for them to come out regularly.
    It will truly be a sad day when you are no longer able to work on instruments. It is also a shame that you have no one to continue Rosa String Works, If I was in the US, I would gladly apply to become your apprentice and continue your work under your supervision. Blessings.

    I don’t think anyone would mind a cut in line for a situation like this. I would insist that they go ahead of me if I knew about it.
