According to the Canberra Times of August 6, "the 1983 Silastic 300 will be the first time the touring-car circus meets with the new "freedoms" recently granted by the sport's governing body and will answer many questions posed by the rule changes."
"All the major teams have been at Amaroo for most of the week
testing but there are still no real pointers to the likely outcome
    of tomorrow's 155-lap contest."
Terry Shiel started on pole in his Eurocars Mazda RX7 (spotted
at last year's Muscle Car Masters).
Drivers include Barry Jones, George Fury, Allan Grice, Peter Brock,
Terry Finnigan, Peter McLeod, Graeme Bailey, Fred Gibson,
Garry Willmington, Mike Burgmann, John Harvey, Jim Richards, Larry Perkins, Ron Dickson, Bob Stevens, Geoff Russell, Brian Callaghan, Barry Graham and Bo & Glenn Seton in their Ford Capri.
Great interviews with Frank Gardner and Howard Marsden.

Although the race still went on under local yellows (pace cars in touring car racing weren't seen in Australia until 1987), its amazing how quickly the crash and fire crews were onto it. Just last night I was watching a video of the 1985 World Sportscar Championship race from Hockenheim....a Formula One Grand Prix track compared to Amaroo.....and there were 3 fires in the pits during the race and each time the fire crews were virtually nowhere to be seen with the teams having to put the fires out. The video even showed the fire crew spraying just about everything (including the cameraman) BUT the fires.
