WATCH: 3rd TIME LUCKY getting alongside at Clacton Pier: Paddle Steamer Waverley: 11.35am Thursday 5 October 2023.
Recorded live as Waverley approached the pier finger 3 times, finally managing to get her lines ashore and get alongside on the 3rd attempt.

I wonder if part of the issue may be the straight approach. She needs a certain amount of way on her to make the rudder effective, as there is no propeller behind it. I've noticed she often comes in fast, at an angle, then straightens at the last moment and backs quite hard to stop. Given her shallow draught (only 6ft 3in), she will then slip sideways a bit towards the jetty once she is stopped, due to the remaining sideways momentum from the angled approach. I wonder if the channel does not allow her to do that here for some reason. I also had trouble spotting on your video the guys on the jetty that are supposed to catch the line. Perhaps they were a bit amateur compared to those on the Clyde, which would not help.
