Where the definitive addition lacks is the voice acting and some sound effects. The original was iconic. AoE DE is quite a feat. They've managed to modernize the game without ruining it. Bravo.
Also the sounds and music is better in HD edition...personally i think the only thing the definitive edition excels is to graphics and maybe ai...the rest is better in HD...my opinion anyway
I didn't like the Bloomy effects of DE. But I tried tweaking them in settings like turning off haze etc, and it turns out to be almost similar and better than HD. The only caviat is that HD uses 2-3gb, whereas DE uses around 35gb of space.

No doubt there are more details in characters/buildings etc that you can see in DE and it looks great on the whole, but compared to HD, DE does seem a bit washed out. Does anyone else feel the same ?
This video doesn't do the game justice. Just played this afternoon on my 4k monitor with the free enhanced graphics DLC and it is STUNNING! The 'washed out' effect you mention is a more realistic atmosphere. As you zoom the camera closer to the ground, it get's more vivid.
In the original version, these are not sharper textures, but devoid of blur, anti-aliasing and other post-processes, that's why they look raw and sharp, believe me in the final edit the textures are 100 times more refined
The HD Edition looks like a classic but the Definite looks kinda strange with those blurry character models. But the buildings are looking far more detailed and sharper.
That's just pure nostalgia, you could argue that the DE is more alive and less cartoonish, it is what it is, take it or leave it, purely down to preferences@@user-lh8gd8qi9m
HD was oversharpened but at times that really played into it's favor, the new remaster looks too soft, and the boats/water look worse in this comparison, and a few other scenes. The Definitive looks better and has new animations as a whole, but they still did a pretty damn good job on the HD remaster several years back.

Yeah it does the original sprite based stuff that the classics like Warcraft 2 and Starcraft were doing back in the day. It's got a cool unique look to it compared to the modern 3D models.
Coming from a person who basically just started playing age of empires for the first time ever, I prefer the look of DE way way more. Matter of fact, the renewed look is one of the things that convinced me to buy the game in the first place, in addition to the addicting gameplay.

I don't personally like DE, and it isn't just a nostalgia. It has certain Red Alert 3 vibes that I don't think suit very well to AoE world, cartoonishness which is fine for sci-fi strategy but not for the historical one. I appreciate solid multiplayer and improved AI, much better than the HD version, but I could run HD version on a potato, my worst and oldest laptop but not the DE. That is for me the biggest downside. Maybe I will get used to it just like I got used to AoE III graphics (but that was long time ago).
HD looks more crisp, but Define got some smoothness to animations and that building destruction is a real eyecatcher I think, unless you move in till shit hits the fan, define wins by a smidge
I prefer the Hd edition, honestly because I like sharper appearing games. It's too smooth with the newer one, although I wouldn't mind being noticed eventually by T90Official or others.
@@MandeepSingh-bv2zw bro i have 3000mhz 16GB DDR4 RAM in my pc, but in game ram usage was nearly 16GB itself, which caused lags and spikes, since then the game has received new patches but i haven't replayed again to test it's ram usage on newer patch. Maybe it has reduced or maybe its the same situation as before, i hope it clears up things

Perfect! They visible only upgraded graphical elements, and added some quality of life improvements whole keep core experience same as original AoE, most other teams would have pushed unnecessary advancements down our throat.

Original game with the hd patch still way better. I don't like the definitive edition. even the AI is different. I swear even though it can't see you it knows where you are.

Main difference in DE is better AI with population over 200. Less lags in multiplayer and better graphics. I would say it's enough to go for newer version.
Yeah Definitive Edition is better and this is coming from someone who's been playing the OG 1999 Age of Empires II since 2006. In fact I still have the 2000 Age of Empires II Conquerors Expansion on my PC.

Teen Line PC monitors were already beyond HD back then. I used to play this in 1280x1024.

I kinda prefer the HD edition buildings color scheme over definitive. But the character/unit detail in definitive is better.

They basically updated it to make the graphics look more modern, while the HD version simply improved the original graphics.
I hate how they made the water in the new one so light. Lookes pretty bad.

AOE 2 animations used to hurt my eyes a little bit. It was like playing a 10 fps video elements in a 60 fps movie

You can change music back to original from options...

Sadly, HD is the way to go. DE does not do it for me. The 3D looks ugly-smudgy in comparison.
