The CANONICAL Answer to the Splatfest | Splatoon 3

- Recently, Nintendo announced a Deep Cut themed Splatfest for Splatoon 3, being Shiver VS Frye VS Big Man. The catch is that the prompt is "Who is the best leader", and not "who is your favourite". I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring and research all three idols, to determine who would ACTUALLY be the definite best leader. We're analysing Deep Cut.
(This video does not reflect my team choice, nor is it intended to persuade anyone to pick a specific team. This is for FUN and FUN only. I will be deleting any abusive or negative comments involving teams or people on teams.)
This topic isn't one I care the most about, but it was SO MUCH fun to put together that I couldn't resist doing it. I'm currently away from my setup, so this is a good video to keep you guys entertained while I'm away. Aside from that, enjoy the video!

The result is not completely fact, nor am I completely confident that it's the definitive answer. But as I said, this was for fun in case I didn't get that across enough. Pick whatever team you want :)

To lead the banditing, it's Frye. She leads most conversations in story mode and she's the most battle-capable (commanding a whole army of eels all on her own)
To lead the splatcast, it's shiver. She starts their catchphrase, announces splatfest themes, and is generally the most charismatic.
To lead music production, it's Big Man. He's literally the team's producer.
So there isn't really an incorrect answer for this fest
The 3 are basically siblings(outside of their actual siblings), Shiver is the older sister, Big Man the middle brother, and Frye the little sister. Shiver leads them in EVERY scene they are together, calm and calculating while Big Man is very laid back and Frye is the energetic one always run head first into trouble. Go back and watch ALL cutscenes with them and watch as many news shows with them and you will see that Shiver is already their leader and leads them in everything from the storymode, the news, Salmon Run, Splatfest announcements, Splatfest wins, again she already is their leader but she loves them both and her family.
i feel like i (and a lot of ppl) are ignoring the leadership part n just voting for their favorite of the three. thats why im team big man forever lol
A big forehead is seen as a sign of wisdom in Indian culture, seeing as Frye represents that culture i know who i'm gonna pick.

I always got the impression from her storymode dialogue that Frye was the closest thing to a leader deep cut had, while in the splatcasts, Shiver was the one who took charge.
Almost like Frye lets Shiver handle the easy work while she herself stops being lazy when something important is going on.
I think that introverted passionate people would generally always be the best leaders, but are rarely given the opportunity with being quieter and more introverted being a weakness rather than a strength it really is.
I think Big Man totally has the potential to be the best deep cut leader, but he doesn't show this enough in canon for me to realistically put him above the likes of Frye.

Maybe if Frye coached Big Man to lead better and get over his minor social anxiety then he could easily top her. But now that I think about it Frye would be a better leader for doing that. She's the most realistic one of the three so I gotta pick her
I completely entirely agree with you! But... I think another thing in the game that aligns with reality is that Shiver and Frye may be such outspoken people who kind of want to be the leader too that they would continuously challenge Big Man's leadership position. They both have a strong presence and he doesn't really, I've seen it happen irl that the team doesn't listen well to the leader or keeps doing little things that bother them because the leader doesn't know how to enforce their position due to their quieter/friendly nature.
It's super annoying imo, and it bothered me a lot to see it happen irl. But because of it I doubt if Big Man would have a good time as leader here. Frye has more guts and presence to shut that kind of bs down.

gotta be honest, big man is more of a follower than leader, i feel like he would lead based on emotions and that isnt a good leader
Really like your insight on this!! Frye seems just very tactically better than the rest. I struggled with her fight the most, but also she was the only one that could properly use a smoke bomb. She just seems very front and center in a way that would make her a very fitting leader.
I debated putting the difficulty of her fight in the script and the smoke bomb thing was something I forgot to mention! Glad you mentioned it here
semi successful with the smoke bomb. she still exploded but didn’t drop it like shiver or bigman. frye probably shouldn’t have used it on the octostomp.
I'm on team big man because, while he is quite shy, he also seems catious and calculated. Plus, courage is something that can be gained.

Team Frye just makes so much sense to me based on most of story mode. I see why Shiver is a popular choice, but Frye just has so many of the great qualities needed
As you said, they all function best together as equals, but if anyone was the leader, I think Frye would be the best at it or atleast have the strongest image as one
More of the sidenote, but I'm kinda scared some people might just take this Splatfest as a "Who is the best/your favorite?" rather than the actual question of "Who would be the best leader?"

I could really care less how people chose Splatfests. I mean it’s just a game. But yeah I still remember the very first splatfest, and man was it toxic.
@Oophello-ve7tm I mean, considering how this game often takes the players’ opinions or even the results of the splatfest to implement things into the actual canon lore/gameplay, I think it does matter for a lot of dedicated players
I've always thought frye was the most mature of the group only for one thing. The get away bomb, shiver stumbles and drops hers, big man let's his drop but kicks it going away. Fryes get away bomb also showed how confident any sure of herself she was, she knew how to do it and let nature do it's thing. I consider that a good leader.
Watch EVERY cutscene and watch as many news shows they do and you will see Shiver is already their leader and the one who takes charge.

@@normanred9212 Well you can consider her leader of Deep Cut the new team, but I do think Frye could be considered the leader of Deep Cut the bandits in a similar fashion. And meanwhile Big Man is in charge of the team's music writing and choreography, kind of making him their musical leader.
That's what makes this such a tough call when you really think about it.

I'm on team Frye! Even if Shiver has been seen to straight up be the "leader", she doesn't deserve it. Big Man clearly doesn't want the main character roll, and has a clear lack of confidence (not just because he picked Courage, like seriously it's a whole thing).
Frye just has all it takes. A bit reckless, yes. Indecisive? Yes. But she has great control over a lot of things, knows her strengths and weaknesses, and overall is fun and loveable.
100% I’m going with Frye. All the points you made here were great, and she just seemed like the most passionate about the group in general, looking at her in the recording studio she seems like the person who carries the conversations and seems the most involved. (Also she’s my favorite member of deep cut and my girl needs a win)
I’m on Team French Frye. She is an older sibling so it’s most likely that she is a responsible person since she probably needs to look after her younger siblings. Frye also speaks for the group and can control a big number of people (or her eels) as seen in Storymode. Heck, she even did her smokebomb correctly without backfiring it! Frye is also confident in herself and I think she’s the most talkative one in the group and with those points in mind, I feel like Frye would make the best leader. Plus, in Indian culture a big forehead symbolizes wisdom and chances are that Frye is pretty smart too! :0
shiver may outwardly appear as the leader, but i think frye is the *real* glue holding the group together

Big Man is my favorite but based on my knowledge of the characters from their in game dialogue, the story mode, promotional art, etc. I feel like Frye is overall the best option to become leader of the group. I haven't watched all of this yet so maybe my opinion will change by the end if I agree with you

I don't think comparing Shiver's shark taming and Frye's eel commanding is a great way to determine leadership at all. Eels and sharks (even in the Splatoon universe) are very different animals. In fact, you could say that the way Shiver and Frye control their animals is done in completely opposite ways.
Shiver's shark, Master Mega, is a raging wild animal that could do a lot of collateral damage if it weren't for Shiver. She seems to be the only one that can control the shark. Frye controls her eels using her flute. Frye can't control her eels without the flute (at least in her boss fight).
The big difference between Shiver's and Frye's control of their animals is that Shiver has to tame and hold back Master Mega, while Frye has to actively make her eels follow her commands. That also explains why Shiver seems to be tougher on Master Mega than Frye on her eels. It's kinda like comparing lion taming to snake charming in real life, very different and not very comparable. Therefore, they way how Shiver and Frye treat their animals doesn't really say much on how good or bad they would be at leadership.
On a side note, in some localisations of Splatoon 3, Shiver uses very formal language when speaking to Master Mega. It gives the impression that Shiver respects Master Mega or that she holds him in high regard. This is a bit hard to make clear in the English localisation, since it's a bit harder in the English language to show respect without using very old-fashioned words. However, the name 'Master' Mega should already show the respect Shiver has for her animal.
The way you analysed Big Man was in my opinion a more effective way to determine who the better leader is. You need to take a look at character strengths and flaws. In the end, there isn't really a right or wrong choice here, since all three characters probably aren't the best leaders in the world. So here is my advice to everyone. The character you pick should be the one you would like to see as the leader of Deep Cut. Pick your favourite and have fun, but please don't be salty if your favourite doesn't win in the end.

I wasn't aware of the respect she gives master mega in terms of dialogue, but that also isn't consistent with her hitting the animal over and over again, and making risky moves, and THEN blaming it afterwards. Plus, even if we ignore the eels and the shark all together, Frye is still acting the leader and handling the hard work in Alterna. She's always passionate, closest to the camera, and could be argued for the smartest since her culture's idea of wisdom is whoever has the biggest forehead. However, your point is 100% valid and thanks for pointing this out as I didn't consider it in the 5 hour time crunch I had to make this.

Something else it appears you didn't't consider is culture. To those who are familiar with Japanese character archetypes, Frye is 100% based on the Japanese "Yankee" delinquent subculture in the single-player campaign. Japan's "Yankee" subculture is named after their stereotype of Americans and how they view Americans as brash, rash, rude, impetuous, aggressive and confrontational. Frye is close to the point-of-view, usually squatting, due to imitating the Japanese cultural stereotypes of a street thug and how they are more likely to invade one's personal space, which is in stark contrast to Japanese societal norms (Japanese are the people who made up a term for a relationship in which physical contact with one another is on the table). You don't seem to consider the fact that you viewing one of the most important traits of a leader as being passion is culturally biased and why Frye's western-style personality being your pick for best leader is just due to her fitting the Yankee subculture. Frye isn't leading them in Alterna, she's basically that gangster in a gang who barks the loudest.
If you're wondering, Shiver is also based on Japanese character archetypes of delinquents, but Shiver's is more in line with the haughty boss of a group of delinquents; obsessed with appearances and "saving face".
During the news cast, Shiver kneeling behind a small podium and having a fan, as well as her Kansai-dialect speech patterns in the Japanese version are meant to invoke the impression of her being a Rakugo performer. Rakugo is a type of Japanese stage theater performance that is somewhat like a mix of stand-up comedy and storytelling narration and acting.
I'd say that all of them would make terrible leaders (Big Man's passivity, indecision and retiring nature makes him not fit to lead anyone, even if he may be not burdened by Shiver's haughtiness, or Frye's impetuousness), which is likely intentional, to fit with Splatoon 3's theme of anarchy and chaos; there isn't meant to be a leader in an anarchist model.

From what I've been seeing it's definitely Frye vs. Bigman. Not to say that Shiver isn't there, but her as a leader...? As a Frye lover from day one, it's extremely validating to see everyone support her. Here's to Team Frye!

It would be really cool if Callie won over Marie and Big Man, bringing everything full circle since the final splatfest of Splatoon 1 when Marie won against Callie.

Big Man prefers to keep to himself anyway so as a leader he's never going to be the best because he doesn't want to lead. I'm probably going on team frye because of it.

Frye has many reasons going for her that make her the most worthy to lead the three.
Always speaking for the team, standing front and center when they appear, her forehead being a symbol of wisdom in Indian culture, Splatoon 3's main colour being yellow (I know that's a dumb reason, but whatever), etc.
I’m on Team Frye for the exact reasons mentioned in the video. I love her witty, outgoing and fun-loving personality, her adventurous spirit and the fact that she’s not willing to back down from danger. I didn’t really take into account how Frye (and Shiver) handles their animal companions as something to judge their leadership skills but that was an interesting observation nonetheless. Also, in the Power vs Wisdom vs Courage Splatfest, her dialogue shows she is aware of her flaws and is willing to act on them to improve for the better (English: “Well, I've got power and courage out the wazoo, but I could use more wisdom.”; Japanese translation: “Hmm, I've already got enough power and courage, so if I'm getting blessed with it, wisdom is good.”). I also want to add that Frye is also a big sister, and while that could mean absolutely nothing, snippets of information from the Art Book shows she loves her little siblings very much - which could also imply she’s very good at leading from a young age. Sure, she’s not the most decisive and she’s very easily distracted, Frye is going to be my pick. Team Frye! (It also helps that she just to happens to be my favourite of the three…)
In most Western polls, Frye and Big Man are close for No. 1 pick with Shiver quite behind, but in Japan, polls say she has a majority rule, with very few going Big Man

I feel that if Big Man or Shiver won, people will always blame the simps, which is part of why I am Team Frye. She’s less likely to have her fans be blamed for winning.
Also because I find her enjoyable, adorable, upbeat, and has big potential of being leader. I love Big man, he is so sweet as a character and probs more of a pacifist and is kinda smart with his fighting style of duplication, but I also love my Indian forehead queen.
Frye cares about her eels, but Shiver blames Master Mega for her bad job.
I think Frye is a good leader and motivator, while Big Man is making lots of behind-the-scenes decisions and Shiver appears to be the leader to an outsider.
Personally, I think they're best without a leader. They each bring something unique, which are perfectly balanced with them as equals. Shiver brings the punch, Frye brings the spirit, and Big Man brings the heart. Besides, Shiver's greedy, Frye's crazy, and Big Man's soft, so they'd collapse pretty fast.

Another thing that’s worth mentioning about Frye is that she’s a true splatlandian. In her first boss fight she asks agent 3 if they wanna do it “splatlandian style” and assumedly fights within those rule, she also mentions reping splatland in other dialogue. She’s an inkling of the people is what I’m saying.

I’m choosing Frye for the exact reasons you stated.
Even though I love Big Man (he is my favorite of the three), Frye canonically seems like the best leader. Shiver is a little clumsy, and big man seems more like support. Thus, if I had to choose, it would be Frye. She controls hundreds of eels, and while playing her bossfight, compared to the others, she had the cleanest exit, like she knew what she was doing.

i think frye has the best practical leadership skills ! i love big man and to me he's the ideal kind ruler to me, but frye's boldness is a really good matchup. i hope frye or big man wins - i feel like shiver could turn dictator at any moment haha

Definitely a pick for me but it's between him and Frye
About Shiver, the sunken scroll does show her ancestor with a splatana but in her Tableturf deck, she has stringer weapons while Frye has the splatanas. If you're curious, Big Man has the tri-stringer in his deck and Splatcasts imply he likes to use sloshers.
Also, Frye is the oldest of four kids while Shiver and Big Man seem to be single children. It would be fair to say that Frye would have more experience dealing with people from different generations and working in groups too. I won't say that the oldest sibling is always the leader but younger siblings do tend to look up to them most times.
When I saw Frye’s remark where Big Man says “Hey! That’s too far. We’re all in a band together, and bands shouldn’t fight.”
In which Frye says… “That so? You’ve been awfully quiet. Spill it, Big Man! Between *me and Shiver*, who wins”.

I’ll be choosing shiver, whilst there is proof that Frye is a good leader, I can just imagine her on day one saying there are no rules in splatsville anymore, and just being to confident and cocky to be a leader. Big man is a good choice too imo, though I don’t think he would ever punish people for crimes, he just doesn’t seem like that type of guy. Shiver, I can imagine on day 1 making a million different rules and making everyone work a job.

Actually, the game’s colors are Yellow, Blue, and technically Red. Frye is primarily yellow with tints of purple. The blue comes from Shiver and the red comes from Big Man.

iI saw a take on twitter saying that without big man, deep cut wouldn’t even be a thing. he’s the producer of the group and makes the business decisions, and is the reason why they got big in the first place. also, he’s levelheaded and makes rational decisions compared to both shiver and frye . he’s the most logical decision imo
I agree with that take but not entirely, since he was the last to join Deep Cut, and without Frye or Shiver, there wouldn't be any vocalists or other cultures in their music since Big Man is purely able to play the piano, synth and horns if I remember correctly. But, that being said, pick what you like!!
Big Man is, in my opinion, the worst pick. please let me explain why.
So, Big Man. have you ever read a book or watched a show with a group of two or more characters? their tends to be a few who straggle behind in terms of writing and character development. enter Big Man. nervous, introverted, side character. read some of his splatfest dialogue. he has to ask the other two girls if what he said was encouraging. in the cut scenes, he is shown simply saying "yeah, what they said!" the two girls have always led him in favor of the other way around. i feel like he would simply be told what to do by the girls leader or not.
edit: im going team shiver because i like that shes a bad leader. she likes power and money, though i believe she has a soft spot for her girlfriend and best friend.

I’m somewhere between Shiver and Big Man. Frye was *seeking* wisdom, meaning that she…didn’t necessarily have it, though that does showcase a step in the right direction. So really, it’s hard. Plus, I don’t have a specific bias to one member, so… I think I’m sitting out this Splatfest.

I think a good comparison to what Frye is like is TMNT's Michaelangelo. Mikey can absolutely do magnificent in battle, in fact it's been confirmed he's the strongest, but the thing is he isn't super into it and wants to do his own thing, his lack of interest is what holds him back, if he put his all into it he's absolutely capable. However Frye is the opposite, she's passionate about fighting and absolutely has the skills, she's basically a version of Mikey who is actually into fighting and puts her all into it! Frye not putting in the same amount of effort in splat casts or other things is the equivalent of Mikey not putting all his effort into fighting. And i think the comparison is really interesting.
I think Big Man would be the best leader. The only bad quality for him if he were a leader is that he doesnt have much courage. Yet pver the past year hes definitely gained confidence. Shiver just lacks a lot of the best leadership qualities. I would vote Frye but Big Man really is the only one who would do anything for Splatsville. Yet Frye and Shiver are more about things between the 3 of them.

In personal experience, two qualities of leadership (or rather good leadership), are being able to step up to the plate to take charge, and listening to others, both of which I can see Frye doing with ease. One thing about having fun is to find ways to include everyone, and considering the culture she came from, Frye would be perfect for since she seems to be the glue between the three for the most part since I also see Big Man as part of that glue.
As for stepping up when needed, Big Man was the most reluctant in the fights and didn't use out right offense attacks, but he was still willing to protect the culture of Splatsvile. Shiver would probably step up if she saw an opportunity, but not pay much mind to others aside from barking orders. Frye is easily the most sociable and probably would listen to others when she stood on the plate, and considering she chose wisdom for the Triforce Splatfest, it's safe to assume when she has her cool. Frye would try to make rational decisions, even if they're not always the best.
Like you said, each one has shortcomings preventing them from being a leader. Here's to hopefully a fun Splatfest (if everyone keeps their outrage to a minimum)!
Honestly, I see your argument for Frye, and I quite agree with it. The make or break for me is whether or not Big Man has his iconic ink pattern for the splatfest.
Frye being the first boss shows that she will protect her people at all cost instead of using them to fight while she doesn’t unlike shiver as she only uses her shark. Frye uses the big cube thing while commanding the eels showing that she also will fight along side her team. She was also the hardest in the rematch and first time in my opinion showing she has the strength to be a leader. Shiver is really easy on a rematch and first time with big man being the middle ground for difficulty.

Part of me loves Shiver, but the way she treated the shark is something I cannot ignore. And indeed her previous splatfest picks were very selfish :/
I'm still very tied between Frye and Big man. I think when given authority Big man would keep the coolest head, make the most ethical choices, and leadership often keeps you busy with work- it's not a mascot or representative role after all. But.. still... Frye has good points too.

I’m going Team Shiver, but mostly because she’s my favorite of the trio, and I don’t know if the badges will be team exclusive for the splash tags! I adore Frye and Big Man so much though! Deep Cut has legit become my favorite idol group in Splatoon after the Squid Sisters held that position since I played the first game in 2015!
I’m leaning towards team big man. Even though he’s not very brave or courageous, he’s still a very strong, smart, and caring leader. (Also the fact that I’m biased..)
I would also choose Frye if I really wanted to, she’s definitely one of those great, energetic, and uplifting leaders..

Adding to the idea of no one member being the perfect leader; I think you can look at their current set up as having shiver be closest to leader of Deep Cut the new team, Frye as closest to leader of Deep Cut the bandits, and Big Man as...I'm not sure if doing the music writing and choreography makes him Deep Cut's musical leader, but it's something to keep in mind.
All that said, I definitely agree with your thesis that, while none of them may be _great_ as the potential overall leader, Frye might be the _best_ potential overall leader.
Interesting points you brought here, and I think you convinced me about Frye. However, as you said, every character has its flaws and probably wouldn't be a good leader just alone each one of them.
Now, a more interesting question would be: between the previous idols, Marie, Callie, Marina and Pearl, which one of these would be a good leader? That would cause even more debate I think lmao.
I see your points, but I also want to add tha,t during the news, Shiver says that Frye often gets swarmed by Smallfryes because they are not big enough fish for her or something like that. That could bring problems to her leadership, since she could underestimate her enemies.

I’m on team shiver, with master mega she was fighting you to the DEATH of corse she’s going to be harsh on her shark. Also shiver and big man messed up with the bomb, but frye purposefully threw the bomb at her eels. With salmon run, Frye just recklessly runs in to the boss salmonds without thinking. Shiver thought about how to get the most eggs and how to stay alive. She also already calls herself the leader and though it’s not official the rest of the group kinda accepts it.

I mean... Frye didn't accept her as leader. Nor did she do anything meaningful in the salmon run match, she sat back, letting the others do the work. But you can be on whatever team you want to be on!

Im team shiver and frye and im glad this video got to the right side of the community,as people can get a bit angry and anxoius during splatfests. i am one of those people so if you cant choose,go with all or more than one team. (it doesnt matter what team you pick in the game unless if its the team your arent nescesarily going for) ive chosen to choose multiple or more than one team quite a lot of times as i cant choose andget anxious if the teams i chose lost (which can be hard to get over) but just remember,there is always another chance! ive struggled with getting over a loss but in the end,all teams are equally good. its really sad that shiver and big mans team have won the most and frye hasnt won that much. (she should win more) frye has cool backstory (as derp said) and she really does deserve it because ofthe amount of times shes lost in the past (7 losses so far for her,not counting premiere) SO GO TEAM FRYE AND SHIVER!!!!!
I’m stuck between Frye and Big Man, but I’m starting to lean more towards Big Man for the following reasons.
1. He has a more calculated approach on things within the group. Shiver and Frye can be too aggressive and pressuring when it’s not needed. A true leader helps everyone come to an agreement when the pros and cons are weighed in.
2. A leadership position would force him out of his comfort zone, and that is something I’d like to see explored in the future. Him just being “A mascot” doesn’t sit well with me.
3. To all you dusty nobodies calling him soft, you can have SEVERAL seats! he is THE BACKBONE of Deep Cut! Big Man is not afraid to take charge for those he loves! As the lyricist/producer he even wrote/produced his OWN diss track, no softie would do that! Big Man is no stranger to puns, and he’s a gentle giant, not soft! You know it’s up when you see them big ol’ fins coming towards you! even Shiver and Frye get out the way!
4. He often acts as a voice of reason to the other two. Big Man has the power to convert you to consider his perspective.
5. Who said a leader doesn’t make mistakes? Sometimes a leader may go against the grail to end with something better. I can see how Shiver and Frye feel betrayed, as Marie is their boss. However, Big Man wanted freedom. He was tired of constantly being pushed around by other band mates, so maybe he saw collaborating with their boss as an outlet. Of course “Getting along” isn’t really what Deep Cut originally stood for anyway! This disagreement is just another day for them.
6. He makes his own path, and doesn’t care about money, or having a huge following (fame). Big Man is also the last to care if people don’t like his personality.
7. Due to the devs’ fascination with the number three, results may be rigged to where he wins anyway! Big Man is canonically the 3rd found member of deep cut! If Big Man wins this Splatfest, he will officially have won 3 splatfests! He will also be the leader of three groups! ( Manda Ryuu dance school, Manta Clan, and finally, DEEP CUT!) That is also 3 BIG things going for him! 😊

I picked Big Man for the reasons he stated in the splatfest announcement. He's less a good leader, moreso a good figure-head. I think him as a leader would be pretty equal with Frye and Shiver in terms of authority, and he'd keep the group together. Also I just love big man

On the one hand, I am a Big Man fan for life. The _spirit_ of this coming splatfest is "Pick your fav Deep Cut member", and he's by far my fav, and almost definitely gonna have the larger team to try and topple Shiver's reign. (No hate to Shiver or her fans, I just really don't want her to win *again.* )
But on the other hand, answering the question literally, (while I do think Big Man would do just fine) Frye would probably be the best choice as leader, and I can't shake the idea of throwing my support behind her bec I believe in her, whether she has any chance of winning or not.
