Another amazing lesson. The hand anchoring can cause problems while speed picking. i've been through that. It is one of those things that you either realise and improve, or can block your progress for a long time. I think your explanation was spot on and will help a lot of guitarists. Thank you for the amazing exercises. You deserve far more Publikum. :-) 🤘

I really appreciate the methods you come up with to isolate the problem areas. The 4 NPS stretch to separate the tension from the hands is one I don’t think I would have come up with on my own.
The fact that you share this with the whole publikum is so unselfish. I love that you figure these things out so that I don’t have to. It’s great. I just find a video, watch it and then go practice it.
One thing that has helped me a lot with tension is giving up on the slinging my guitar low. Several years ago I hiked up my guitar a lot and my hands and wrists began cooperating much more. My picking angles felt much better immediately too.

Tremolo picking clean in fast sextuplets at 120 bpm or 16ths at 160 bpm is a great goal for beginners, and how you divide the notes in that exercise is fantastic

Shared with my wife that I hope to get any patreon stuff for X-mas. She thinks this is cool cause I hit guitar ruts all the time as a new guitarist. I have also found what helps me keep control of my picking hand is to minimize The contact of my pic with the string just grazing the pic across the very top of the string giving the desired sound that you want and greatly reduces the sound of my pic going across the strings so that the sound of my guitar is more clearer and cleaner because you don’t hear the sound of the pic going across the strings nearly as much thus making The sound Of my guitar more exclusive and with better control by just rolling my pick across the top of the string

A good right hand tip is about the thickness of the plecturm (I only use orage tortex) and where the pick is held. The smaller the "exposed tip", the faster. In otherwords, hold the pick towards its base. This will take time to adopt to and the muscle in the thumb has to build strength to cope. But it is more than a marignal improvement once mastered, because the arc for each picking motion above the *selected string* is smaller in consequence

Not only the biomechanics and ergonomics of picking, which you did an excellent job of covering- but stamina! If you practice getting your picking longevity up at lower speeds, it will up your maximum speed. The trick is to practice in that comfort pocket. 80 bpm I’ve found is a magical number because you can go super slow, mid tempo, or blazing fast because in a sense it’s also 160 bpm double timed. If you manage to build that endurance, your max speed will boost like nuts 🥜
And you’ll get squirrel 🐿 fingers

Can I make a suggestion? It would be useful to know your picking slanting configuration for each pick stroke, upward or downward. Sometimes it's obviuos, but in some others there are different possible ways of doing it. I generally put a "D" over the first downward slanted picked note and the following notes are performed all the same, then a "U" for upward and all the following... you get the idea.
    Keep up the good work!

Bernth. In regards to high speed alt picking, are you really picking from your wrist? [wrist driving the motion], or is your wrist relaxed and you're actually making a very small forearm rotational movement. People say pick from the wrist, but how fast can one truly move their wrist in a knocking motion? When you demonstrate your picking motion in the air for the camera you're actually rotating your forearm instead letting your wrist drive the motion. I believe this very small movement detail would help many of your viewers with A) speeding up their alt picking tempo, & B) have more control over the motion.
We change our picking form subconsciously at higher speeds. Coming to this realization helped me in my own playing anyhow. :]

    • @RandyBakkelund
      @RandyBakkelund Před 2 lety +2

Sometimes I try to pick from the wrist like guitarists say to do, but no matter what I do, my forearm wants to move. Anchoring your wrist just isn't enough to acheive accurate wrist picking for me. There must be a missing piece of the puzzle.

You've answered one question for me that I've never seen an answer to in 30 years. That being arching the hand vs moving the whole hand. Thank you for that. I do have a question about economy of motion in both hands, actually. For the picking hand, doesn't a tiny picking motion make the jumps from string to string seem MASSIVE? How do you overcome that? For the pressing hand, doesn't focusing on not letting the fingers move too far cause huge tension in the hand? (It does for me) Please help!

    I got a weird one for you….
I can play slow tempos and fast tempos cleanly, but absolutely suck at mid tempos. And I find my faster tempo picking motion to be very similar to what you advocate, but I just can’t SLOW DOWN with that picking motion and so end up reverting to a less economic picking motion when playing, say 3 n/b at 120-130 bpm.
I’ve been working to try to fix this terrible habit, but it’s been a rough one.

I noticed that I also have another problem with alternate picking. If I place my fretting hand in a start position and play form there, then it works out fine. But when I have to move my hand from one position to another along the fretboard, my alternate picked runs get very unsynchronised. For example you have a vibrato on 14th fret and then jump to alternate picked run from 8th fret. I guess the problem is in the jump from one position to another.

I would love if he just did a really simple simple shred lick pattern that only included 3 or 4 notes

Servus Bernth. Awsome lecture. For me its hard to pick consistent when i switch from fretted to open strings or even worse from palm muted to regular alt pick. Maybe some ideas for part 2. 😉

This is interesting i feel I am much better at faster licks on the lower strings probably because I mainly practice riffs on those strings
