I was absolutely shook when I heard this in the theater. In 2.5 minutes, it totally summarizes and eviscerates the bizzaro-world standards women are held to. If America Ferrara does nothing else, she will be deservedly remembered for delivering this speech. Bravo, Greta Gerwig.

It's all humans... not women. We seem to be still locked into this celebration of victimhood. It's a VERY American sentiment that sadly so many other Western countries have latched on to: "woe is me". "Poor me" "I'm a victim". We really need to embrace stoicism which is the EXACT opposite of victimhood.

    • @kingofswing3000
      @kingofswing3000 Před 5 měsíci +106

It's the perpetual victim speech. And women hold each other to, or are responsible for, most of it. Take some responsibility. Look: both men and women deal with stuff like this daily. So we're not enemies, we're made to complement each other. It's about recognizing our weaknesses more than our strengths and leaning into each for help.

I understand that, but do the Barbie's understand the weight of her words? The only reason why Barbie was feeling such existential dread is because of Gloria's connection.

The comments to your reply pretty much sum up why it's impossible to be a woman: 1. Immediately dismisses women to recenter men, 2. Blames women for being victims, 3. Points out that it's just a script so it's not "real." It's honestly just...so perfect. Thank you, random CZcams dudes, for so perfectly, *perfectly* underscoring the truth of this speech without even realizing you are. Seriously, just bravo.

I watched Barbie in theater in my German hometown. During the speech, you could hear a pin drop and when it was over, some girls behind me started applauding. Most of the audience joined in, including me and my sisters. Barely ever did I feel such a strong sense of sisterhood and understanding with a bunch of girls and women I didn't even know. Whatever people say about the Barbie movie, I can only thank Greta for speaking so strongly for women in western societies and giving me and so many other girls the feeling of sisterhood and of being understood.

Barbie impacted me more than I thought it would. I remember watching that BTS shot of Barbie being assaulted in the L.A boardwalk and punching the guy and thinking "Great, another cashgrab of a movie." And then the trailer came out for it, and I saw all the hype and thought "Okay, this will be fun!" So me and my boyfriend dressed up as barbie and ken for the premiere. I remember how people came together wearing blonde wigs and pink dresses. I remember someone yelling "Come on barbie, lets go party!" In the crowd and all of us laughing. I remember the cheering of the crowd during the title card. I really wasnt expecting to have as much fun as I did, but I did.
And then I took my sister to see it. I was fresh out of therapy, and struggling with my purpose. I can remember crying like a baby during the "What was I made for?" Scene, laughing with her during "Im Just Ken", and talking about the movie on our way home on the bus.
The other day I was in the throws of insecurity, and thinking "Nobody looks like me. I feel so alone and unlikable." And immediately, without warning, my mind thinks back to this scene. This monologue is so important to me, and every single woman. Someone remade it in the comments from a mans perspective. And im sorry, but you dont get it. You never will, the system isnt rigged against you like it is us. (This isnt an excuse to be transphobic, trans women are women.) And in the points it is rigged against you, thats still the same patriarchy we're fighting against! Why do you think you cant show your emotions? Why do you think mens suicide rates are so high? I am a woman and I agree to this 100%. I also have nephews and when I look at them I notice how it can be impossible to be a man too. They have to love their kids but not too much or they’ll be seen as a mom. They have to be strong, but not too strong or they’ll be seen as jerks or if they are not strong enough they are not real men. They have to like sports and nothing romantic. They have to work hard to support their family but not too hard or it will seem like they don’t love their family or if they work too hard they’ll be seen as absent fathers. They have to treat their daughters and sons differently and if they are not the stereotypical son and daughter, people will think there is something wrong. They have to want to do housework but at the same time not like it or they’ll be seen as being whipped. They are not allowed to cry or have feelings or they’ll be made fun of.
My nephews are sweet and kind. They cry and one of them plays with dolls. I worry how the world will see them, but at the same time, I’m proud of them. I acknowledge how hard it is to be a woman, because I am a woman and it is so damn hard. But I realize that it can be hard to be a man too. This movie could have very easily tipped into being full-blown camp or (even worse) an awful case of tonal whiplash, but Gerwig and the writers did so well with it and Ferrera and especially Robbie delivered their lines with such perfect balance between humor and gravity that their points could land home. Too dramatic a performance or dialogue ("in your face-ness") can spoil a movie and cause the audience to disregard the message. This movie was balanced on a knife's-edge with writing, directing and acting, and they absolutely nailed it.

Just because it doesn't apply to you doesn't mean what was said here is bs... I really appreciate this scene because it is very emotional to me... I was abandoned as a child. My parents weren't really there for me. My mom got remarried when I was 10, and I was happy with my new family until my stepdad cheated on my mom with my friend when I was 22. Again, I was left alone, betrayed by someone who earned my trust, who I called dad for 12 years. My mom became depressed and alcoholic. I had to support myself during university. I also struggled to have healthy relationships and often found myself in abusive ones. I got cheated on and beat up multiple times. I got through all that, and no one has ever told me that they're proud of me... not even myself... It might be true that I have a victim mindset, but you can't say life hasn't beat the sh outta me 😂
This scene is a reminder that life is just so difficult and the difficulties for each one of us just vary... and we need to be proud of ourselves even though things in our lives are messed up...
Even though I have a stronger mindset now, this scene still speaks to me, and I'm glad it doesn't speak to all of you.
And for guys who say that this applies to everyone, not just women, I completely agree. But please let us have our moments and gather in our sisterhood for once.

It is literally impossible to be a man. You are so handsome, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.
You have to be strong, but not too strong, or you will be seen as "toxic". And you can never say you want to be strong. You have to say you want to be resilient, but, really, you have to be strong. You have to gain money, or your value as a man will become close to zero, but you have to share it also if your companion does a big nothing. If by hard work and investing most of your time you become a boss, it is only because of your privilege. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas, or try to discuss about them: it would be perceived as mansplaining. You’re supposed to love being a father, but whether you want to become one or not, the decision is never yours. And you don't even have the right to the certainty of raising your own children. "Do you not trust your partner? You are a monster!". You have to be a career man, but just to provide for other people. You have to answer for women’s bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you’re accused of toxicity. You’re supposed to be handsome in order to rise the interest of women, but not so handsome that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other man because... hey, man are loyal to their friends! But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line, never cry. It’s too hard! It’s too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.
I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other man tie himself into knots so that people will appreciate us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing men, then I don’t even know.

What I love about this movie is that it calls out men for their behaviors and the system we live in, but also how other women who are supposed to support us tear us down.

This speaks so much to me. I’m a woman, working full time and a parent to a neurodivergent child. It is so hard to please everyone…sometimes I want to shriek and cry to the skies because I’m the one who has to hold it altogether for my husband and son. I’ve been joked about my anxieties. I’m just so exhausted…

@_PuppetMaster86 Are you capable of independent thought? We've seen this same speech in countless posts on Facebook and other spaces for almost 30 years. Junk emails with it. And it completely ignores shifts and the fact society isn't one person but many, and worse it's not men placing the standards but women usually.

Yeah, one of my problems with this movie is that it upholds the myth that male experiences and female experiences are completely different things. In reality, men and women both have a lot of the same struggles. It's just that women, on average, have it worse.
