I picked up an M5 yesterday. After about 5 minutes of fooling around, trying different picks, I am able to open it, in less than 10 seconds consistently. Exactly spot on description. Thanks!
Im new to picking and got one of these after I discovered those clear practice locks are a joke, I can open my clear one with just the pry bar. This M5 Ive opened twice in an hour, once picked and once raked but Im missing something. I think I may be using too much tension or starting too deep maybe.
This guy inspired me to learn the art. Bought his basic kit and started with a couple common practice deadbolts I got for free that took about five minutes to consistently pick. Than I used that primer to actually pick a lock I really needed to at work, a model 5. Took 10 minutes, was very different than deadbolts. Lesson for me is locks aren't very secure. I'm loving the technical aspects
This video was suggested after I ordered this lock online. The regret is real. Your videos are wonderfully educational though, I never knew there was such a great depth to lock smithing. Keep up the good work!
We use this lock to lock up all of our equipment at work when I say equipment I mean Mack and Kenworth trucks and trailers so it's interesting to see how secure the lock is.
After a few years of lurking and watching I bought your Genesis set and tried my own M5 that used to "protect" my shed. I was able to luck my way into it after a few mins. I've been playing with it, watching some other videos and I'm getting a better feel for it and can get into it in under a minute reliably. This is disgusting that I bought this believing their "security rating". I now have a decent PAC Lock that was recommended by one of your video competitors. Thanks for what you do and thanks for sparking my interest into trying something new.
i work at a certain retailer and we have a couple of outdated padlocks laying around. my genesis set came later in the day today and i'm taking a crack at our M5 and an american 1205 hope the paclock has been serving you well!
If I'd known how easy this was to SPP I wouldn't have had to pay for it in the shop this morning. I simply opened it straight from the card and left the keys intact. So rewarding for a Locksport beginner.
You have shown me how many padlocks have too short driver pins. I'm glad my Americans are all low cut and super jagged. Thanks for the education as I always learn something cool and /or new
Thanks -- glad you like the videos and get something out of them. In a couple days, the Master 27 will be featured in this series. It has the same problem, but the core is removable, so we can take a closer look at the problem. Stay tuned!
Man I got one of these been kicking my ass from the get go brand new out the pack. Raking, rocking single pin picking going at it with a lishi also. Can’t get it for anything
I appreciate all of your videos, I've been watching for roughly a year and a half. Today i lost the keys to my two master m5's and figured i would give it a shot at picking them, i had watched this very video about a week ago with you talking about how bad the core is. Im very disappointed with the quality, this being the first lock ive ever attempted i figured it would be difficult. It took me less than a minute to pick the pair of locks. Definitely going to attempt to swap the cores as well as buy a couple more locks to try to pick. Thank you for your channel, its the reason im about to pick up a new hobbie.
LPL, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the predrilled 1/8”(3mm) pilot hole perfectly in line with the top of the brass bible. It also doubles as a weep hole. Strange placement I’d say. Actually if the driver pins were a little bigger it might have been harder to get them out after drilling when the shackle is in the way. p.s. I did this to an old boss who would always show up late to the job( sometimes an hour). I took all the pins and springs out after drilling it. Funny because now it will open with any key or screwdriver and he still doesn’t notice.
Just received the 81 piece pick set from Banggood that you recommended, after a few tries I was able to pick the M5 in less than a min. I really want to try those decoders you mentioned, but all out of stock.
I have like 6 of this, I live in a country with tropical weather. All I can say is this lock can not withstand the tropical weather very well. After it got rust inside the mechanism, you can easily pull with your bare hand to unlock.
Lost my key to this lock in my garden shed - I'm new to picking, but was able to pick this in a few minutes. If I can do it, anyone can. Pretty sorry security.
I have a question. I am new to picking and I watched the LPL video about rotating thru different locks to practice. I got an M5 for my collection and picked it without too much difficulty the first time. I cycled thru some other locks and came back to it a few days later. For some reason, I spent hours the second time around with no luck. On a hunch I opened the lock with the key, re locked it, and then attempted to pick it again. I opened it in 30 seconds. So my question is what unlocking it could have done physically inside the lock that made it so my troubles disappeared?
I would agree with the placing,an added feature I believe is the spring tension on the core/shackle. The tension I have had to apply to mine was considerably more than I have experienced with the "lesser"5 master. Jmo 🤔🤔
Could be... it's plausible that I just didn't notice. I tend to use a pretty massive amount of tension on locks with standard pins only. That can negate the effect of spring tension on the core pretty effectively.
The tension on the Magnum's cylinder return spring is much heavier. On my example it's strong enough that, if I quickly pull the tension wrench out while holding it open, it will whip it passed the locked position like a plug spinner was used. The lock still functions, so I have no idea what's going on with the actuator, but it will turn CCW
This one certainly wasn't that extreme, though I seem to recall that a Magnum round body padlock I had has some pretty absurd spring tension on the core.
Thanks for this video. Glad to hear the Magnum M5 is hard to break, sorry to hear it's super easy to pick. Why do I care? Well, I bought a two pack of these locks to secure the batteries on my RV. Is there a similar 5 or 6 pin lock with security pins?
Well that was a pure let dowm. lol I was really hoping that the M1 did better and not just under fire. But better under people fire. Oh well still a master.
I may be wrong but some of these locks can have some better bidding than the one you have. I own one with rather deep bidding. Mr. Bill also told me that some of the locks have had some security pins (at least that is what I recall). I was getting crazy a year ago trying to open the one I had.....no longer though.
Bitting may make the lock harder to rake, but given the open keyway, even the most extreme bitting possible should not slow down someone SPPing (particularly if you use TOK tension). I'm not sure what to say about the lock that was giving you trouble. As far as security pins go, that is a complete surprise to me. I've never heard of a M5 with security pins, but I suppose its possible.
I’m looking for a lock for my bike rack while transporting my mountain bike. It seems like most bike theft is due to bolt cutter use or electric grinder use on the chain, lock, or cable. I purchased a very heavy duty hexagonal chain by Shlage and I already have one of these locks. Would it be fairly resistant to bolt cutters or a grinder if I add washers and nuts to minimize space on the shackle?
I dont know if they updated this design recently, but man am I having trouble on this one. The core is so vague when I'm doing SPP on it. No clicks from the pins, no matter how little or how much tension I use.
Every no.5 I have has ballbearings as well as every m5 I have. The only difference is the m5 has an improved shackle and weaker lock body vs the no5 which has a much heavier duty body and a mediocre shackle. I tested them on the anvil....the m5 took 3 hits with a 4lb hammer and fell apart, the no5 took 10 hits with a 4lb hammer and is still functional. I choose the no5 over the m5 any day
I suspect the version of this lock sold in UK is slightly better than your version. I’m not a seasoned picker but I can usually pick most locks reasonably quickly, but I gave up on this one after an hour of fruitless attempts at SPP.
I have a #5 that only requires me to set a single pin. Then there's this M5 that I can't get open for the life of me. I think my pick might be too thick? I'll have to grab a set of .0018s and try again.
@LockPickingLawyer I realize this is an older video, just wanted to let anyone watching know how garbage Master lock truly is. Inspired by yours and bills videos I decided to get a set of picks and try my hand. The Practice locks were a breeze and I was into a Master M5 that I've got on a trailer within an hour of getting my hands on my set. I almost couldn't believe it, but after watching you do it with such ease and me able to crack it without a full understanding of what I was even doing, I can't believe the amount of money wasted on these things.
I really wish I knew. I suppose it must be money. They not only save money on pin size, but also use a slightly smaller core. It's a wild guess on my part. Maybe I've looking for logic where none is to be found. Maybe it's just a complete engineering fail.
I see. There is no trick. The key should turn smoothly when fully inserted. You, apparently, got a bad lock. It's very rare, but it happens. I'd take it back to the store.
Brother, I picked this lock for hours, I finally opened it up but it was by luck, and I couldn't do it again... Weeks later I finally figured it out! VERY HEAVY TENSION and I lightly picked 4,3,2,1... CLICK😀😀😀
I am new to lock picking and have a small assortment of locks including the 40mm M1 Magnum from Master. Somehow it is the only lock that is giving me trouble. Did I just happen to get a tougher bitting? Please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong
Hey Tim, I am new to lock picking and grabbed and 40mm M1 magnum and can't get in to it. Did you figure any tricks to crakc this lock, or did you just move on? Thanks!
@@timrogers768 Awesome thanks! I thought that might be an issue, I could only use my fatter tensioner and doesn't leave much room for the pick, Ill have to order some TOK tensioners. I only started a week ago. Thanks again!
What's the point in all the hardened steel and shim resistance if it's just going to pick easy. I bought it and I feel ripped off. Level 10 security, my ass

Seems alot harder than No 5. Someone said to try it counterclock wise, and I can get it, but my homemade spinner is not strong enough for M5.
SAME!! 😡 it's my first lock after the transparent practice lock.
I just got a 2-Pack...raked both in 1 minute..=))

I found a Master Magnum M5 on the street just like Bosnian Bill. It sure is one hell of a heavy lock.
I found mine on a chain link gate.

I have a master M5 law that has had beeswax melted in it to keep you from feeling the pins how do you beat it
Heat it. Melt the wax.
Whats the basic trick to open this lock with just the key when you buy it new?
You lost me... What do you mean by "trick"? You open it with the key by inserting the key and turning clockwise until the shackle is released.

Rapped. Smacked on the side with a hammer.
So what you're saying is it's King shit on Turd Island
my m-5 can be raked rocked and zipped open only good for a training lock for noobs
That doesn't surprise me at all... essentially this is a Master #3 as far as pick resistance goes.
