- Cocaine cowboy Liam Byrne appeared in the Old Bailey Court this week via video link from the notorious Belmarsh Prison where he will be kept until his trial for firearms later this year
Byrne and his brother-in-law Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh along with four others are facing charges emanating from the Encrochat phone hack which the prosecution alleges involves a plot to hand over firearms to the UK police in order to get Bomber a lenient sentence on drug trafficking offences.
Nicola speaks with Niall Donald about the background to the case, about he conditions in Belmarsh and what to expect from the upcoming trial.

It shouldn't have clearly been allowed to happen, and get to this stage, if the doctors psychiatrist and hospitals gave out the tablets that people asked for people would not be buying streets some people do not cope with life so well and there for need medication, that is clearly refused to most people and that is why they are on the street drugs...

Speaking of Belmarsh, I think it's only compared to Guantanamo in terms of high security, e.g. there's a tunnel connecting the prison to the Crown Court next door. I did jury duty there once while there was a high profile trial going on.

Was that guy in some plan to try and distract the authorities from convicting somebody else? In fairness as I heard said in Ireland quote "there is honor among thieves" unquote. In the UK and Ireland, do they have a life sentence with no parole? Is that even a thing? They do it all the time in the US
Life in the UK your given a determent amount of years to serve where as Ireland your in until a parole board sees fit, you get a parole meeting every 7 years so you could be in for 17-25 years but for gangland murder your gonna serve well over 35 years
A whole life tariff in the UK means you never get out
