explanation for why the sides of the can don't weaken when the top does:
the top and sides are 2 separate pieces of aluminum, they're folded together but there's probably still a layer of oxidation between the folds :)

The plastic coating inside the can is to stop the acid eating the aluminium like the drain cleaner does. Aluminium corrodes really easily so even the low acid levels in canned beverages is enough to eat through them.
