  • This is a bass cover 'attempt' at China Cat Sunflower~I Know You Rider, performed originally by the Grateful Dead at Veneta, OR on 08.27.72.
I say 'attempt' because to try to copy exactly what Phil Lesh was doing during any particular concert performance requires an incredible ear, knowledge of theory, and mastery of the instrument. There is only one Phil Lesh and that's not me.

Thanks Will! It is a 2016 Hofner Verythin Contemporary "CT" bass. I have flat wounds on it and using a Golden Gate mandolin pick.

Love your thoughtfulness in your playing in this version of CCS/IKYR. I wish this model was one of the short scale ones because I’m interested in a short scale bass of some kind and they have what looks like bigger and better pickups on the CT model than the other Hofner basses. Plus the finish on the website list of the latest CT model has the dark outer edge and a deep cherry or slightly purple in the center. What color was this for this 2016 model? In general, is the neck and action on this able to be adjusted nice and low? I tried the Epiphone Jack Casady bass and it really was iffy if the action could’ve been brought down lower by whatever means. Thanks! @@hofnervince7406

Scott, thanks for reaching out and sharing some thoughts. Best I can describe the color is a very warm, deep red or burgundy center with a darker outer edge in black. I haven't done much with the action and use flatwound strings with a large, heavy pick. I've found with that bass, I really have to play with EQ in different venues and settings. It can quickly go from warm to boomy depending on acoustics. I absolutely love that bass and it plays so easily. The scale seems shorter than my Peavey Cirrus. Hope that helps! Peace

@@hofnervince7406 Thanks so much for your response! Yes, it does help. I think yours is actually 34” long scale. It’s a beautiful color. And it comes with those bigger pickups. It would be my choice but I’m specifically looking for a short scale bass which two of the other Very Thin double cutaway models are except that they have the smaller pickups.

What do you tune to match the pitch? They’re a little out of a tune live

Sorry about the late response. I always tune to standard tuning and sometimes playing along with live recordings highlights that one of us is not in tune. This may have just been a lucky coincidence.
